1412.0. "Tennessee impressions" by MSDOA::CUZZONE (Warning! Aliens approaching!) Mon May 14 1990 21:04

What the heck, I may be the only one here so far, but why not a note on
    the Volunteer state.

So far I have fished two lakes, a river and a stream.

    1) Little Pigeon River - runs through Pigeon Forge (major tourist trap
and home of Dolly Parton's amusement park "Dollywood"). I wondered why
the state charged non-residents $25 a year for a trout stamp until I
fished this river (it also runs through the Great Smoky Mountains Nat'l
Park where the scenery is unsurpassed). It was like shooting fish in a
barrel. In less than an hour, I had caught 3 rainbows from 10 to 13
inches and lost a half dozen more. All fish were caught/lost on Vibrax
spinners in gold (one with a white tail). The locals disdain the trout and
fish worms for smallmouth. The tourists walk out behind their motel
rooms and cast flies until they limit out. I neglected to buy the
stamp so it was C&R only and highly discrete, at that. Next year, I'll
buy the stamp and try the park.

    2) Ft. Loudon Lake - an inmpoundment of the Tennessee River, it forms
the southern border of Knoxville and Knox county. It is heavily
trafficked with boats and landbound anglers. The TVA has built
multiple ramps and fishing docks. Action has been slow when I've
visited but I've seen small stripers, largemouth and a couple big
channel cats taken. My personal take has been 0. This will change.

    3) Melton Hill Reservoir - another TVA impoundment between Knoxville
and Oak Ridge. Caught 3 decent largemouths (pound to pound and a half)
in a couple hours from the shore off a major point. Saw considerable
evidence that the spot was well-fished (litter is a big factor in
Tenn.) I will be back. I will continue to use big spinnerbaits in
    chartreuse and white.

    4) Creek with no name - I only stopped for the opportunity to fish in
the shade for a change (mid 80's and humid yesterday). This creek runs
into Ft. Loudon. Caught a dozen little bluegills on a size 00 mepps.
Switched to size 0 and caught a 9" smallmouth. Wouldn't have been fun
    without 2# test.

So far I like it and I haven't even begun to hit the major lakes like
    Dale Hollow, Norris, etc.

Anybody heading this way, just give a call first.

Sure did, Ronni. I just finished Sales training a couple weeks ago and
relocated to Knoxville. I spent a few weeks here in Feb/Mar but the
fishing was a little slow ( had to visit Coonass just to catch a gar ).

I have been absolutely astounded by the quality of the fishing and
haven't begun to explore the possibilities. I will keep everyone up to
date as my experiences multiply and extend an invitation to everyone
(not all at once, please) that passes this way to drop me a line and
share a day on the lake (or river).

1412.4Many definitions of residentMSDOA::CUZZONEWarning! Aliens approaching!Tue May 22 1990 17:1321
    Hey Coonass,

Tennessee requires 60 days residency to qualify for a fishing license,
30 days for a drivers license and immediate car registration. Go
figure! I bit for the non-resident in February so I could wash my
lures. Cost me $25. I forewent the additional $25 for the trout stamp
at the time. Now that I have a drivers license, I went back and found
that a resident license is $15; $25 with the trout stamp.

In reading the newspaper this weekend, I discovered why the trout
fishing was so hot on the Little Pigeon river: the town of Gatlinburg
stocks every thursday ... 28,000 fish a year. That adds up to over
3000 fish per mile of river.

I don't know when I'll get back down to Dallas or Bistineau. I'll
probably have to spend the summer entertaining my family so it likely
won't be until the fall. Glad to hear the floodwaters are receding.
I'd hate for those redneck joints to get washed away. Doesn't TBDW
have a stool named after him yet?

Well I got say thank you SSS

I made it down to the volunteer state last week and even
managed an hour or so of fishing with SPLIT SHOT STEVE. SSS took me to
a little stream chock full of fish, We walked the bank and cast
spinners on ultralite gear. Steve nailed the first one a smallie,
I'd say it was about 2 1/2 , would you say SSS. Then I got a couple
of rock bass out of a pool, the only other fish taken was of the unknown
variety. MYSTERY FISH Yeah we haven't had one of those in a long
    time.
         FISH DETAILS
                      	About 3"
    			Real oily to the touch
A dark blueish black color on the top
A Lite greenish tint directly underneath
    			with a sliver belly,
    			Large scales (for its size)
And its back had a slight hump to it.

THis little fish slammed the lure and for a 3" fish it was a bit
    fiesty.

Anyways, Thanks alot Steve for showing me some southern hospitality
I had a great time, Hope to be down there again soon.

    Les BASS-Co.

    Yo Gitzit'

Don't you know we don't drink anything stronger than iced tea down
here? Anything stronger and 2 1/2" smallmouth become 2 1/2 pounders
    when the story is retold.

Les' description is right on the money. I've never seen the likes of
this fish here or back in New England.

Les, I apologize for the lack of quality fish in the Little Pigeon last
week. Next time, I promise we'll hit one of the TVA lakes. We'll just
need to set aside more than an hour before sunset.

Sounds like a gizzard shad. Look in a book to confirm.
1412.11Skipjack?STAFF::WOODThu Sep 27 1990 15:3011
I have a book dedicated to identifieing fish species called
American Food and Game Fishes....great book...I looked through and
there are a couple of possibilities....It gets very detailed
though, like number of scales along certain lines, number of spines
in fins etc....There's a freshwater herring species that might
fit the bill, as well as some whitefish and cisco....The most likely
description I saw was for a freshwater skipjack, also called a
blue herring...there is no picture. Also some forms of chubs looked
    possible...

looked some more, and I now think the Southern Mooneye
(hiodon selenops for anyone who cares :-) ) looks like it
might fit the bill...I checked for the gizzard shad and
it's not listed...it does contain local names for most fish
types, but it wasn't in the directory...

The body was too tubular to be gizzard shad. Those I've seen.
