1259.0. "Fall Fishing" by BAGELS::DILSWORTH (I'm the NRA) Mon Oct 09 1989 11:41

Fall is here and the leaves are turning and it's COLD. The "Clan" is
talking about ice fishing and small game season is here in NH. How many
of you Bass Fishermen out there are putting away the boats and getting
    the rifles sighted in?

    Don't do it yet!

Yesterday I decided to take the boat instead of the shotgun and am glad
that I did. I went to DonMac's "Honey Hole" and had my best day of the
year. Eight Bass and three Pickerel all on my favorite lure. I have
caught more than eight Bass several times this year but what made
yesterday special was two of them were 4#10oz and 4#4oz respectively.

Hey Keith, what was that lure that you were using? and what time of day
was it? I would also ask you where this honey hole is but I guess thats
    asking too much!!

Your right, that's one question too much! But for the other two:
Keith "spinnerbait" Dilsworth was using, you guessed it, a spinnerbait.
And I believe he said he started around 10am and fished for a few hours.

DonMac will have to tell you the location. Good luck! 8-)

I fished from 8AM until Noon with the two big ones coming between
9:30-10. The paturn was a slow retrieve in scatered weeds and pads in
4-6 foot of water close to the drop off. I was using a Mepps Bass Killer
3/8 oz adjustable single silver blade with a blue/green skirt
    spinnerbait.

Has anybody heard anything about salmon in the Lamprey River?

I am thinking about doing some salmon fishing in the Lamprey River next
Sunday, and was wondering if anybody had heard if the fish were in yet.
Another possibility would be sea-run brown trout fishing.

Well, I gave it a shot this weekend - going for those big largemouths
I spotted of the dock up in Paugus Bay - and well, it was COLD!!
    ...and WINDY!!!

I hauled the Crawdad all the way up to Laconia for the event, but
the lake was rough almost constantly all through the weekend, with
a strong wind from the north to put a cold bite into things. I also
think I had a touch of the flu, which was also a drag...

Lures: Only the good ol' smoke colored grub got any responses on
Saturday, and Sunday afternoon, with some good sized shiners, I
landed a scrappy - but not too big - smallmouth, and a 20" pickerel.
Monday was so cold and windy I didn't dare try the boat, so I fished
from the dock. No bass, just another pesky pickerel, but bigger
than the last. All in all, hardly worth the effort... If I could
have been someplace out of the wind it would have been a lot more
    fun.

final tally: one med. smallie, two lg. pickerel, one fat perch.

I must say though, minnows for bait certainly has it's place, but
it's somewhat boring waiting for action.

Any of you NHerites happen to have the `89 NH F&G rules pamphlet on you?

After listening to the weather report for the next couple days, looking
at the calender and considering my schedule here, I'm considering
taking thursday and friday off and doing some fishing.

I'm aware that ll salmon and lake trout seasons end on Sep 30th. What
I'm not clear on is exactly which bodies of water can be fished for
other trout up until Oct 15th. I'm pretty sure I heard someone say
that in lakes that contained lake trout and salmon - all trout were
off limits as of 9/30. I could not find my `89 rule book to verify
    this.

Anyway, I'm hoping to spend part of the next couple days fishing a
NH lake that contains both trout and smallies - preferably BIG
smallies! Any suggestions? I wanted to check on the rules for Great
East Lake on the ME/NH border, never been there but I think it may fit
    the bill.

I fished mon. with Jack "The Lavender Lunker Hunter" Hagerty on
a couple of lakes looking for Smallies. Naturally, I was using grubs
'n weenies fished slow along the bottom (like the book says...).
Hagerty either got bored, or is an idiot savant, because he landed
two BEAUTIFUL rainbows on a tripple ripple pumpkinseed grub just
reeled in steady. These were the purtiest rainbows I think I've
    ever seen, color wise!
We ran into a kayaker who has fished the lake for 10 years and
said he'd never seen a trout. Both fish were released, and would
have been whether the season was open (?) or not... At least my
solo perch was closer to the respective World Record for it's
respective species.... (grumble, grumble). Tough, windy day - thank
    God for Gore-tex and Thermax...

I, too, caught a nice rainbow while smallie fishing with a grub this
year, on the northern most section of the merrimack.

My catch and release philosophy has not yet been extended to keeper
trout and salmon, maybe someday. But at this point, I only fish for
them occasionally during early spring and late fall, and I do so hoping
    to fill the dinner plate.

1259.15designated lake trout lakes closedRAINBO::MACINTYRETerminal AnglerWed Oct 11 1989 15:249
I had my question answered by calling the F&G.

Designated Lake Trout Lakes are closed to all trout fishing as of
Sep. 30th. This was the statement that did not appear in the `88
rule book (that I have in my office), but that I had heard.

All other trout lakes/ponds are open thru 10/15.

Don-

I'm pretty sure that the trout fishing season ending on 10/15 only applies
to trout ponds. I believe that you can continure to fish rivers and streams for
trout through "natural openings."

Tried the Lamprey River- Bzzzzzzzzzt! Two minute rainbows (both returned.) In
about 3 years, Chinook should start returning. They released 600,000 4-6 inch
fingerlings into the Lamprey. It was a fitting finish to a less than satisfying
season.

Just back from Texas planning new SHACKmate products...

Yeah, NOV. 4 sounds good for me at Wallum Lake. I was up there
the day after the fall classic Monominac gig with my nephew.

I took two Browns measured at 14.5 and 15 and my nephew took a
nice 14" Rainbow. We only fished a couple hours drowning worms
while listening to the Pat's get creamed by Buffalo, crewing on
some munchies, and catchin' rays on the BARGE.

The water in about 3-feet off of high water mark and the ramp
is a little soft, but should be no problem. I may go back this
Sat if weather is good, if I'll be expecting to see a few true
    	die-hards before ice-in.

    Just for information!!!!

I went out on Lake Pawtuckaway saturday and had a few surprises when I
got there. They have let the water down about 4-6ft so you can imagine
how the launch area is. To get through the Bay of Fundy the water is
1-3ft deep in most spots. As I got out and started casting I noticed
someone waving at me to get out of the area. I did'nt pay much
attention and continued working the shoreline. Finally I noticed that
I was very close to about 25-50 duck decoys and verbal contact of the
the hunter who was not very happy with me,my boat and radio. I decided
to accommodate his wishes and proceded to exit the area. This was a
wise decision on my part since me or my boat are not steel shot proof.
I finally got to do some serious fishing and found that old bucket
mouth was still willing to cooperate. I picked up six bass and lost a
couple trying to lift them in the boat. I had one about 1.5lbs and
everything else was 10-13in. It was a great day but ended how most of
my trips to this lake end. The wind picked up and clouds moved in
making the fishing a little rough. There still seems to be active bass
but I don't think it will be much longer as the water temp fluctuated
between the magic 55 degrees to 56 degrees. A few cold nights and the
bass will head for the deeper homes for the winter.

From the "Commonly Asked Questions and Answers" section of the N.H. rule book:

Question: What types of fishing can I do after Sept. 30?

Answer: Brook trout season remains open on designated rivers, streams,
and ponds until Oct. 15. Landlocked salmon and lake trout in the
Merrymeeting River remains open until Oct. 31. Warmwater species,
bass, pickerel, horned pout, walleye, white and yellow perch, and
sunfish remain open all year, except on designated trout ponds.

Went out last Sat to one of the smaller lakes still open for bass up
here and had a very productive trip. We were on the water at 6am and
off at 9am . Between the two of us we caught 16 all largemouth ,
between 3 and 5.5 . All of these were on a shelf in about 6' right at
the drop to 18-20' , all but one was caught on spinnerbaits . The water
is getting colder but they seemed to be stocking up for the long Maine
    winter ahead .
We weighed all of them before releasing just for giggles , the final
    count was 3 over 5 , 4 between 4&5 , and the rest(8) under 4 but over 3
. This was a pretty good concentration og decent fish in a short time .
The duck hunters were wondering what we were up to.

I grew up in Framingham, but have'nt fished there for a few years.
A friend has told me that if you can get into the water near the area
of Macomber Farms (it's now the home of the MSPCA) you should find some
fish. You might also try Waushacum Pond, if you have a boat. The
Sudbury River used to produce some nice fish years ago. The dam at
Fenwick Street (take Edgell Road north, towards Sudbury.cross through
the Center ((Fram St. Coll)).take Central Street on your right. follow
to the dam on your left.approx 2 miles) was a favorite spot.

If you want to do a little travelling...try Mill Pond in
Westborough...I'll leave it to you to locate this "spot".

,Well sunday morning, my daughter decided to take Dad fishing this
time, well off to the BAIT STORE, a place a usually dont go to until
ice in, but picked up a dozen shiners, off we went, the most action
i've seen in an hr in a long time, we or i should say she landed
some really nice bass (8) and 1 pickeral i'd say from 1.5 to 3lb's,
I didnt even have enough time to throw out the rubber worm, i'd
cast it out, but i would end up letting it sit on the bottom so
i could give her another shiner or remove, ANOTHER fine catch,

well, it's getting that time of year.
