1119.0. "Catfish in NH" by SALEM::HART (Catfishing in America) Mon May 01 1989 17:36

I've gotten a hankering to eat some catfish after reading some
recipies. Does anyone know where to go in southern N.H. for some
cleanwater cats ? You know the kind with white bellies that don't
taste like mud. I live in Manchester so Massabesic is where I was
hopeing to catch a few but I don't know if there are any in there.

    Kevin,

Try fishing in the channel just north of the bridge on Route 28
or out on the point where the channel turns towards the lake. I
have seen many Horn Pout (alias Catfish) taken in this area...

     Kevin,
try the fish department at Shaw's,saw some lovely catfish
fillet's there, not much of a fight but already cleaned and
skinned! And think of how many worm's you'd save!To make the
    "fishing"trip more challenging,try grabbing a few fillet's
and run for the door.Almost as much fun as feeding Alka-Seltzer
    to seagulls.

Its a little bit early for Horn pout, especially where the weather
hasn't been that warm. I don't fish for pout until the trout
slow down because of the warmer water.

RE. 1119.2 feeding Alka-Seltzer to the seagulls!!

I had always heard about that but had never tryed it. About three
weeks ago, while waiting for the ice out to occur, I had to make
a trip to the Manchester dump. I stopped at a small store and grabbed
some Alka-Seltzers and proceeded to the dump. I threw one over to
a waiting seagull and he ate the thing took a few steps and flew
off, he looked ok to me and I was really down in the dumps, ark-ark,
that nothing happened. So I flipped the remaining three on the ground
and another seagull came over and ate them. This one stood there
for a few seconds then fell over and started doing the kibby on
the ground and then rolled down the hill and got run over by a passing
bulldoser. Oh well!! It amused me for a little while and I didn't
    think about the ice.

Denny, love 'em or hate 'em, they're still protected. I'm not
particularly fond of skunks or snakes, but I don't go out of my
    way to kill them.

People who get their jollies from killing animals just for the sake
    of killing them are sick.

Never condoned killing 'em. Just making an observation.

1119.11Too serious for me!\SALEM::DAUTEUILA cow don't make ham.Thu May 11 1989 18:5322

Jeez, some people have no sense of humor. My comment about
seagull's in I think reply .3 wasnt supposed to be taken
seriously.Since I know Mr Hart, the originator of this note,
and I know his sense of humor,I thought he would enjoy it.
I'm glad you guys know which species are protected, and I'm
sure you all are into catch and release too, right?Like them
    pro's on the fishin' hole?I know your type,catch a trout,tear
the hook out of its mouth(along with half its jaw because
you dont use barbless hooks,"lose too many fish without barbs
on them there treble hooks")grab the fish with one fist stuck
in its gills, the other hand wrapped tightly around the poor
fishes belly,"dont want him to fall back in the water before
I get a picture!"then drop it on the rocks a few times trying to
get it back to the water.Real serious outdoorsmen,so serious
they couldnt recognize a little humor if it poked them in the
    eye.

         Mike

P.S No,I never killed a seagull with Alka Seltzer or with anything
    else for that matter.

Perhaps judicious use of the smiley face, :-), would prevent future

After rereading my reply in .2,I'm suprised noone got on my
case about the suggestion to"grab a few fillet's and run for
the door".That would be shoplifting after all!And I KNOW none
of you release fish in the manner described in .11,right?RIGHT???

                                               (smiley faces here)

p.s. Kevin Hart hasnt even read .2 yet,he went on short term
         disability after entering .0!

I'm back from being out on short term disability , I had a painful
back injury and strict bedrest was prescribed. However I did manage
to crawl out of bed and drag myself on my hands and knees(after
eating many alka seltzers) to the river. I put on a whole nightcrawler
and sat back to enjoy the scenery when a smallmouth of about two
pounds took the hook and gave me one hell of a fight.
Now I'm not complaining but I wanted to catch Pout and the smallies
would have no part of it, I caught 4 in a half an hour, I heard
it was better Pout fishin a night.
