976.2Ice vs SalmonCASPRO::PRESTONBetter AI than none at allWed Feb 08 1989 15:5212
Are you referring to the Winni Derby as opposed to the Meredith
Rotary Club Ice Fishing Derby? The two are sometimes confused,
especially this time of year, when they begin promoting the
Winni Derby before the Ice Fishing Derby is over.

The Winni Derby is a salmon fishing derby held in early May. The
entry fee this year is $20, and the grand prize is a 19' deep V
boat, w. motor, trailer and a load of good fishing junk thrown
in. I have the flyer at home. Maybe I can post the info in here
    if anyone is interested.

Yes, the Winni Derby, the dates for the Derby are May 19,20 21.
I entered last year but didn't get anything big enough to
register, the salmon must be at least 22 inches long. We caught
a lot of salmon but they were all between 18 and 21 inches. Maybe
it was the bait we were using and probably the depths we were
    fishing at.
Well, there are only 99 days till the Derby....time to get ready.

976.4Winni Derby boat registration exceptionsCASV01::PRESTONBetter AI than none at allWed Apr 26 1989 13:3513
Can somebody clear this up for me? I thought I heard somewhere that
for the three days of the Winni Derby, boats could be used on
Winnipesaukee without NH boat registration, but I've gone through
the flyer five times and can't find anything about it. My brother's
about to buy a boat (he lives in Mass) and we are planning to fish
the Derby, but we need to know about this boat registration thing,
because he doesn't want to spring for a year's registration just
to fish one weekend on Winni.

    Thanks,

Don't nail me to the cross if I'm wrong but I heard some fishermen
talking at our club and I swore they said you did not have to register
the boat those three days as long as you were registered in the
    derby.

You heard right. Here's the scoop:

    	RULE #4:

All boats used by the Derby participants must be equipped
according to the Marine Safety Laws of the State of New
Hampshire. Derby participants are exempt from boat registration
for the three (3) days of the Derby.

This was taken from the 32 page Winni derby "newspaper".

Yeah, I came across that info too. It seems that fishermen come
from far away for this derby, so it's nice that they make this
available to them so they can use their boats...

Hey Moe, what page is that on, anyway?

So, how about it you eskimos, did anyone out there fish the Winni
Derby this weekend? Did the storm bring you any luck? Without
a bob house, I imagine it was quite nasty.

    Lets hear about it.

I went to Newfound this weekend for the derby. 3 shorts and lots of
flags/lost fish on Saturday. Got up there a little late on sunday
only had 3 flags, managed to miss all 3. Weather was pretty wild.

Wish I had caught my 6 lber this weekend instead of a couple of weeks
    ago.

I fished Winni out of Wolfeboro on both Saturday and Sunday with a couple of
other guys. I picked up 3 lakers on Saturday, 19", 20" and 21.75".
Although above the 18" minimum, they did not qualify for the 24" tourney
minimum. Unfortunately, none of them were tagged.

On Sunday, one person in our group caught an 18" laker. I got a couple of
flags using a 8" jack smelt. On my first flag, the fish ripped off over
160' of line. I waited, trying to give it time to swallow the big bait, but
apparently, not long enough. Set the hook and felt a real heavy fish on the
other end but then ripped the bait out. Oh well....there's always next
year!

I was using LARGE bait too, had the same problems. Tried using larger
hooks too, figured more barb to set, but no luck. I usually don't have
a problem setting the hook, but with the larger bait I only hooked 3
    out of 15!!

Went up for both days. The fishing was GREAT, it was the catching
that didn't happen. One flag in two days :*(

We were on newfounf for both days. 3 flags brought a 1 1/2# rainbow.
Spooke to F&G and he had only seen/heard about 'bows coming through the
ice on newfound. Didn't see much action around the lake either.

At 2pm yesterday there was only one tagged trout on the board
at Derby Headquarters. Some lucky *astard wins an $18,000 boat
for a 3.8 pound tagged laker. I hear it didn't even come out
    of the Big Lake.
976.17No luck hereMRKTNG::TOMASMon Feb 04 1991 19:5214
I hit Winter Harbor on Saturday and got 2 flags...no fish. Had about 150+
people around and saw one cusk taken.

Stopped by the board in Meridith early on Sunday A.M. and NO tagged trout
were on the board, but I later heard that someone brought a 6 lber in with a
tag. Unconfirmed, however.

Tried Waukeewan on Sunday in hopes of a Rainbow. No luck...one wind flag.
Saw 2 trout taken, but too small for the board. Beautiful day for sun
tanning though!

Oh well...there's always next year!
