810.1 | Blues NG on N. Shore | TOOK::SWEET | Capt Codfish...Looking for Mr. Tuna | Mon Jul 25 1988 17:49 | 9 |
| No sign of blues off salem (ie. newcombs ledge, around the miseries
or inside). I have seen some bait but no blues. There are blues
out around the B bouy out to the A and stellewagon. I recommend
heading south because for what ever reason they have not moved inshore
up north.
I will be able to update later in the week assuming it stops raining!!

| They have been taking a few small blues inside and outside the
Merrimack River this past weekend. There are also a few being caught
off of Hampton Beach, Shoal Ledge, Shoal Rock areas. We need a good
east wind to warm the water up and get the blue feeding.

| I was out Saterday down to glousta and the Blues are in Ipswitch
Bay off of Halibut point. I'm going out Saterday and will run that
area. I'm out of Newburyport with "Rainbow Chaser". Give me a call
after 08:00 on Sat.
A good launch to reach Ipswith bay is at the Glouster High school.
Run north out of the Anisquam river and your there. Just follow
the cape shoreline in the 60ft depth and yo'll find Blues at 30ft
to 45ft. If you wish to save fuel bring lots of chum. And rig up
with little Mac's or Pogys on steel leaders.
Good luck!

Walt,Steve,
Thanks for the information. My partner for the trip will not
make it and i will therefore stay and fish arround the north-shore
area.
Steve, I think we have met at NIO. I designed QVPS. If you send
me some info I will ring you up.
Walt, I think i will be out there this weekend and i will ring
you up.
A little about me. I work @APO and live in Beverly. About two
months ago i bought an IMP/INCA 23.5' with a 260 OMC-COBRA and
a COX-Super-Loader trailer. For ths year i will be taking it
in and out. I am fairly new to boating and navigation and
i will be interested in meeting with some of you...old timers.
I am also interested in sharing my boat with other people
from the north-shore (or nearby ) areas that like to get
out there often and can respond quickly when the catch is
arround.

810.8 | Success at last | TOOK::SWEET | Capt Codfish...Looking for Mr. Tuna | Mon Aug 01 1988 12:50 | 19 |
| Blue Flash...not the IBM type.
Took friday off and covered a good portion of the ocean between
Boston and Stellewagon. Started in Salem work my out to NW corner
of Stellewagon around the moonie tuna fleet (no dogs around the
fleet, good news!) but no blues either. Actually think I marked
1 tuna up tide of the fleet but nothing in their slicks.
So back towards marble head I ran and work that area for a while,
finally heard someone on the radio with fish by the graves and
ran another 10 miles over to there and YES they were there.
Boated about 10 fish 9-13 pounds and three of those came on
a fresh water spinning outfit with 8 pound trilene XT. These
fish were just finning on the top so you could see them and cast
popers right at them and bang, fish on. Also took a couple trolling
rapala magnums. Don't get any better than surface feeding blues.
BTW these fish were long and lean another month and they would all
be 14-16 lbs.

Bruce,
I stayed in the boat all weekend ( friday 2:00 pm - sunday 2:00
pm). I trolled for hours arround salem and the marblehead harbors,
but no blues at sight. I tried newcombs ledge, channel between
Bakers and the Miseries, from #9 to #1 of the Salem harbor, and
towards Gloucester. I guss it was not ment to be. Can you tell
me where about is the area you are talking about. I tried to call
you a number of times over the radio (both you and "sweet dream")
but i got no response. At one point i heard one of you calling the
other.
Thanks for the update. I will be waiting to hear any reports on blues,
and i will be taking off (from work or otherwise) as soon as hear
they are out there.

810.11 | SW winds mean no fish at salem... | TOOK::SWEET | Capt Codfish...Looking for Mr. Tuna | Mon Aug 01 1988 19:48 | 18 |
| Captn K.
I tryed around salem on friday and then on sunday morn (in the rain
and fog). I did not mark let alone catch a single blue. I called
that pete's fish hot line and he had claimed blue were caught
from the pigs to gales ledge. I have concluded that you will
not find the blues around salem when you have a SW flow as we
have been having. I think you will see them there when the wind
comes from the east. Thats my theory lets check it out with some
field data. If you can make the run about (about 10 miles) there
are often blues from the graves to the B bouy, I also heard someone
say they had fish by boston light which is not far from the above.
You will usually find a good size fleet working these areas
so when one finds fish expect a crowd. I listen on 68 for
people talking about where the blues are.
Good luck.

| I used to Blue fish at the west end of Hammonasett beach in the

of Hammonasett beach.

Blues are all over the place down here right now. You pretty much
can't miss on bunker. I usually fish east of Hammonasic beach in
the Westbrook area. In particular in the Duck Island rips and a
great night spot is in the rip behind Mannetesuck Island. All of
these will require a boat. One other spot that usually produces
is the breaker east of Clinton Harbor (chelsea pnt.) If you get
a chance try the Ct river in Old Saybrook. the bridges are loaded
with blues.

| HOT action for Blues last Thursday night by the Party Boats from
6 pm to 10 pm at the Isle of Shoals. We anchored there late and

action! Fished around 12-14 miles out (I think around Stellwagon),
and the six of us pulled in a total of 28 blues between 10-13 pounds
in about 4 and 1/2 hours. Another 6 or 7 got away.
Added bonus of the day (aside from the weather) was a school of
dolphins which swam up to the boat, and several whale sightings.

good size (arround 14 lbs).
I might go again tonight for a few hours arround high tide and i

| I found out about the bluefish being in at deveraux beach friday
just after 5pm .So I got my gear together and called my buddy
and headed off to marblehead . Because of various delays ,mostly
because we didnt know where we were going ,we didnt arrive till
almost 9pm . There were quite a few people but only a few with
small blues. Then we overheard a guy saying he had just left Lynn
beach where they were killin'the blues . So after getting directions
from some reluctant fisherman (youd think we were asking for their
life savings),we then arrived at Lynn beach to find herring scattered
everywhere on the beach. Apparently the blues drove them right up
on shore, unfortunatly we were too late the tide was about dead
low and the fish were not to be found . One guy we talked to said
between him and his wife they got 54 fish. We fished till 11pm
When the metro police threw us out.

Went fishing last nignt off Pine Point Beach, just north of Old

ourselves 4 nice 10-15 pounders. Funniest thing you ever saw was
my 8 year old trying to bring in a 15 pound blue, she couldn't even
turn the crank, but with her sisters help, they landed it after
about 20 minutes. Theirs came on a sand eel, my 3 came on an Atom
popper. Blues are running real heavy in lower Maine right now.

While on the subject of salt-water fishing, I've moved from Nashua
NH to Brockton MA. Where in the Brockton area is there (will there
be) good bluefishing from shore? I went to Plymouth once last year
and didn't catch any, but did see a little kid catch a blue that
was not much shorter than him (I gaffed it for him, about 14-16
lbs.) I spent many afternoons up at the mouth of the Merrimack
(Plum Island) and caught a bunch so I am looking for the same kind
of action in the south part of Boston. Even the cape (not to far
out on it) would be acceptable.
Anxiously awaiting bluefish arrival,
Tim
P.S. When will they arrive? I seem to remember reading about them
from Bassin' Bob in the cape cod canal. This would indicate they're
on there way to Brockton/Plymouth...

Mr. Moderator please move this response along with the others....
Some areas on the south shore I have heard good things about are
worlds end in hull (a 50# striper was taken there last week). The area aournd
the hull high school (hull gut I think) it is accross from pedocks
island. Also the Fore River in Weymouth and maybe the North river
in situate. You should also consider some early morning drives
into south boston or dorchester. Castle island and behind the Kennedy
Library and the Reserve Channel are produce blues in july and august.

keepers). By 10am. the blues were finning on the surface but were very
spooky and hard to approach. We did better when we cut the motor and
difted along. The extra distance you get with a big surf rod would have
been more helpful than the light tackle and fly rods we brought along.
Good trip, but strange fish.

There were about 100 boats trolling around almost everyone got fish.
The bite stayed on until around noon then slowed way down. Heard a
report that there was a school hitting by the water tower in Hampton.
Ran up there and they were 2-3 miles out. Fish were breaking but very
few caught even the party boats there wern't getting them steady.
There
was too much seaweed to troll after 100 yards we were all weeded up.
Do the make a WEEDLESS bluefish lure?

| Well we went out on Saturday (8/25), that was a mistake. Forecast was
for rain and up to 10mph winds. It started off that way but quickly
went for bad to worse. In the end it was at least 25mph winds, 6-8 foot
seas and no conditions to be fishing in. We managed some bites but
didnt land any. Then headed home early. On the way home we actually
buried the bow several times, no small task on a 42 foot cape dory!
I gotta get my own boat, so I can go Sundays instead of Saturdays!
The skipper wouldn't take my money for the day, good consolation for
the crappy day. These are great guys to spend a day with on the water
if anyone is interested send me mail and I'll forward info on how to

got two.
Thursday, wnet out in the evening and trolled about half way down Plum
Island, nothign not even a strike. Except for the idiot who cut me off
in the mouth of the Merrimac. Got my lure back after he unwound 50 yds
of mono from around his prop.
Saturday got one at the Ilse of Shoals. Trolled from the merrimac to
hampton with nothing, then ran to the isle and trolled some more.
No-one was getting anything. On way back all the party boats were off
Salisbury beach.
Sunday, Trolled down Plum Island to Ipswich got one fish. Heard report

of boats, lots of bait, very few blues being caught.

I would like to talk to someone about a trade - a salmon trip for

is something we should look into.
I'm going out this weekend from a new harbor. I've just moved to

| Wow, Haven't seen this much salt activity in this file in months.
Went out last night about 5PM out of the merrimack. Started trolling
after I cleared the mouth by the north jetty. Had two blues on before
I went 100 yds. Fishing was fast in 45 minutes had 5 fish all around
10-13 lbs. Only 3 other boats fishing in the area and erveyone had
fish on. This was about 1-1/2 hrs before low tide. Maybe the NE wind
of the past few days has improved the fishing. The night party boats
were off the North jetty when i went in and they were also catching
fish. Up toward salisbury and hampton I could see other party boats
there.
Looking forward to this weekend.

I was out ~10 miles off R2 (Ipswich Bay) fishing for Cod. Got a

Could have been the bait fish on the surface. According to the

| Went out Sunday. Caught one 12 lbs at the mouth of the Merrimack.
Lots of boats up toward Salisbury/Hampton so headed that way. They
were getting a few about 2-3 miles off the point that separates Hampton
Beach from north beach. Trolled around and got nothing anchored near
the party boats and others and fished cut mackeral -- nothing. A boat
with 3 teenagers not a cast away was killing them. I think they were
bait fishing with herring or some other small fish. There were 3-5 in
long-- anyone know what the were need some the next time I go out. I
bet they caught and released 20 blues while I was there 1-2 hrs.
They were also getting them on the same bait off the water tower on
salisbury/seabrook beach.

He release most of the blues except for 4. The ones he caught were
all a good eating size (3-5 lbs.).

| Mes parents were walking along the beach on friday night (Seabrook). They
ran into an old timer doing some surf fishing. The blues are now in and the
stripers have been biting right off the beach (in the surf.)
Seems like a good time to do some striper fishin'.

| I got a couple Friday off Halibut point in the afternoon about 1-2 pm
just after the turn of the low tide. Yesterday, I got a couple small
ones trolling in late afternoon from the mouth of the merrimack towards
Hampton got them need the nun off breaking rocks.
On Friday on my way back in by Badgers rocks on the incoming tide
blues/stripers had bait trappen up against the rocks. The birds and
fisherman were going crazy. I kept going due to the time and not
wanting to get into that crazy mess.

The slammers should be here soon.

810.50 | Anyone have better luck at Newburyport? | COBRA::TONER | | Mon Jul 01 1991 22:16 | 9 |
| Went out on a half day party boat saturday out of Newburyport..
Hilton's, I think. We went out for small blues on lighter tackle.
The blues really just weren't there. I landed two that weighed about
3-4 lbs. each. My brother, who has never fished for blues, got shut
out, as did every other party boat in the area except ours. We
landed a total of six small ones. Really quite a lousy day for
zingin' da blues.

810.51 | Not much better on Sunday... | NQOAIC::BEAUCHESNE | | Tue Jul 02 1991 00:53 | 20 |
| I was out on Sunday, and the fishing was pretty much the same, although
things started to pick up on the outgoing tide - but nothing really
hot. My guess (actually the guy I went with's!) is that the fishing
will probably improve with a change in the wind - something like a East
to West breeze to push them back towards shore. There were a lot of
boats out there and we didn't see too many pulled in, although there
was a large number of boats out there for the duration.
Off the topic, but germain to Newburyport - the schoolie stripers were
still in the mouth of the river, making for some interesting
observations. As soon as they began feeding on the surface and
attracting the gulls, a swarm of boats would motor over trying
despartely to land one. More times than not, someone would be a little
too agressive with his boat and scare the school away. As we didn't
have the tackle we'd have liked for cathing stripers, we kindof stayed
away and watched. We did see a dozen or so caught, mostly by trolling
a "tree" type rig - whatever they're called.

Moe

810.52 | at the annisquam | PENUTS::GORDON | | Tue Jul 02 1991 15:06 | 18 |
| I went out Saturday as always in Newburyport, since that's where my
boat is. Trolled around the mouth of the river foa a while. Even the
party boats were leaving no-one was getting any fish (blues.) I ran
down to the mouth of the Ipswich river and caught one 3-5 lbs and
couldn't find anymore, must have been a stray. They ran out to halibut
point (cape ann) nothing happening but a few boats. Decided to pack it
in and troll over to Essex river and go swimming. Halfway across the
annisquam inlet the water started boiling with blues and we had two
fish on. We caught fish for 1 1/2 hours they were 20-24 feet down in
50-60 feet of water and all over the place. We were the only boat
there.
I have had much better luck this year in that area than near the
merrimack. It is still earile yet and all the ones I have seen are
small 3-7lbs.

810.53 | Bluefish-Scituate/Stellwagon | NEMAIL::GREENBERG | | Wed Jul 03 1991 15:17 | 22 |
| Here's another report from Sunday. Fished out of Scituate Harbor to the
"21" buoy and then across to the SW corner of Stellwagon.
At the 21 we picked up fish right away using downriggers at 25 and 40
feet, trolling Rapalas. We caught maybe 3 fish around 4-6 lbs each and
then it died.
We took the ride across to Stellwagon for better fishing and really had
to hunt for them. We caught a few. Much bigger fish -- around 10 lbs,
almost all of them taken on the flat line about 10 ft deep trolling
Bomber lures with two eel-like teasers up the line. All the fish we
caught were on the Bombers. None took the teasers even though the blues
we caught were filled with sand eels.
It was hunt and peck all day. Around the time we had to leave, it
picked up and we were catching fish right away after putting our lines
in (of course).
The wind all day was northeast and light. Overall the fishing was ok,
but no bonanza. The high point of the day was my buddy catching a 10
pound bluefish on his 8 lb ultra light spinner. Took him about 20
minutes. Great sport.

| Sorry for the last response. Yes, I meant the north side, Ipswich bay.
Over the weekend I didn't get out except tor the Fourth of July. They
were catching lots of fish about low tide at the mouth of the
Merrimack.
There were 4 party boats drift fishing in the channel by the south
jetty. What a zoo, I heard they were getting good sized blues, smaller
private boats trolling, a real mess. I hear the coast guard kicked
them out of there. The weekend traffic and all.
Tried to get out saturday and sunday but couldn,t make it.
Bruce, did you make it up there and did you catch any? I have had the
best luck on Halibut point and that area this year. Maybe because the
wind has been from the NW and N and is pushing the warm water and bait
against that shore.
I here the Bules are everywhere.

took some blues around there though. There were small blues around
half way rock which we also caught.
If the ever shines again I will fish that area on my way to the beach.

810.57 | Cape Cod Bay | HPSTEK::BCRONIN | | Tue Jul 09 1991 11:33 | 14 |
| Went out of Sesuit Harbor (Cape Cod Bay, Brewster/Dennis) and found
small Blues 3-6 lbs. everywhere from Barnstable Harbor to Wellfleet.
No thick schools chopping bait, just scattered fish. We fished mostly
shallow water (5-25 ft.) and caught fish on Hopkins, Roberts Bounders,
White bucktails while casting. After people started complaining about
sore arms we trolled up a bunch flatlining Hoochies in Orange and Neon
Green. Kept four of the smallest ones for the grill last night, Mmmmmm
Mmmmmm, Good!
FWIW, the Rock Harbor fleet went out around Billingsgate Shoal to
the deeper water. We gassed up in Rock Harbor and the fish we saw on
the charter boats weren't any bigger than what we caught...... But I'd
bet the customers were told they were catching 10-12 lbers.

| While out at Plum Island on Friday 7-19-91 myself and two friends
caught a total of 8 blues. There wasn't one that weighed under 11 lbs.
The blues were chasing pogies onto the shore at my feet. This is no
lie. The whole thing lasted about 45 minutes and it was awesome. This
was also the first time iv'e caught blue fish.

I was there in a boat. Never saw so many blues chasing bait busting
the surface all over the place. caught five on rapala magnums trolling
and then broke out the surface plugs and chased the schools around. I
lost count of how many fish we caught. I also donated 2 magnums and 5
poppers to the deep.
All fish were 10-14 lbs.
Sunday got into some big ones between boars head and Isle of shoals.
Weighted one in 15.1 lbs. all the rest were simular sized but weighed
less. On the boat my scale weighted it as almost 17 lbs (bouncing boat
and wiggling fish).
Went out yesterday and got only one fish 12 lbs.
I heard that the ran the beaches all the way up to maine. Maybe the
tuna are pushing them in.

| I got mine on the falling tide and during slack and on the incoming.
They were everywhere and hungry. They were hearding schools of bait
into shore and hitting everything. Later in the afternoon there
weren't too many around. All the boat traffic and idots trolling
through the middle of the school drove them down and away.
If you ever run into a school feeding on top, *don't* blast right thru
them. Slowly move to the edge and cast to them. We followed the same
school for over an hour and never spooked them, then some nut went
right thru the middle and they were gone.
