| I second the motion...
Three years ago, up in what I thought were the relatively uncorrupted
wilds of Maine (Carrabasset Valley), I walked away from my car for
FIVE MINUTES to check out part of the South Branch of the Dead River.
I returned to find only one item stolen: an antique bamboo Orvis
fly rod inherited from my grandfather and of considerable value
both monetary and otherwise. Whoever it was, knew what they were
doing. It was easily the most valuable thing in the car.
Needless to say, after filing a police report, I never saw the rod
again.
Moral: Things can get swiped just about anywhere. LOCK IT or LOSE
IT.

My insurence company says that they want a detailed list of the
items stolen....and they will depreciate by 5%. ($250.00 deductable).
Many of the items in the "WORM BOX" have been gathered over the
years and from many areas of the country. ie, locally produced items
from Alabama, Tx, Luisianna, Arizona, Ca. etc. These loacally produced
items are generally found in the local' where they are made. How
do you sugest I itemize and price these goodies? (the source is
no longer available)
Going through the BP catalog last nite, I came up with about $400.00
just in plastic worms. That doesn't even begin to count the other
assorted "stuff" that fills a huge worm box. I really am being
honest with what was really in there. It would be easy to come
up with a list to "blow your mind," but I really would like to
stay somewhat moral about this whole thing.
What are some of the Items in that worm box that I forgot to list?
This will be an interesting order to BP

752.4 | how do you lock up a Canoe on the roof?? | CSSE::PETERSEN | | Mon Jun 06 1988 15:45 | 13 |
|
I drive around with my canoe and gear in the car regulary during
the summer, and now that I live in an apartment I will be leaving
the canoe on the car overnight alot.
Question: Is there a good way to secure/lock the canoe? Right now
I'm using about 5' of chain and locking it to the roof racks, if
anyone really wanted to steal it they could, this would just slow
them down.
Any safer ideas??

$300 worth off stuff. Heres the kicker it reappeared on my door step
a week later, I guess the kids mother or father found it and my
fishing license in it, and made the kid return it.

| re .4
I carry a canoe sometimes, and when I want to leave it overnight
and want it secure (more secure, that is - it's all relative as
.6 pointed out) I run a cable bike lock thru the cross member of
the canoe, then run the cable thru the car windows around the center
post between the windows. This tends to compromise the security of
the car a bit, but I don't leave anything of value inside the car.
Using a cable instead of a chain makes it very tough for bolt cutters
because there's nowhere to brace them (they usually brace them against
the ground and push down) Of course I close the windows on the cable
as much as possible, too. I really only use this technique when
the canoe is on the car at home, too.

it with a case hardened lock. I also have a trailer hitch lock

Ahem...as I was saying in .6 .....they are out there..and if a theiving
type person WANTS your gear, boat, motor or so forth..he will have it
regardless of the number of chains and locks you use. This is
especially true if he knows no interference is likely and the goods
are in plain veiw.
In my mind the chains and locks will only keep a honest man honest,
and wont much deter a committed theif. Its a sad commentary on the
quality of life but the ripoffs are around and about..Travel
light, take precautions.

| Normal home owners will cover it, if it's stolen off your property.
However, you normally have a hefty deductable with home owners.
In my case, I have a $250 deductable. That's almost 1/2 the value
of what was stolen, so I SHOULD be reimbursed for a little better
than 1/2 my tackle.
I'd guess a separate rider on tackle would be appropriate, thru
boat insurance. Then the deductable would probably be much less.

I know, why the hell would you leave all that stuff up there? Well
it's like this..
The property is PRIVATE, owned by the Associated Sportsmans Club.
The camp is set up about 100 yards from the water and several (many)
hundred yards from anyone. The first weekend my 6 year old and
I set up, fished and spent the weekend (it was great) we woke up on
sunday morning to a terrential downpour.
The old boy who is kinda the caretaker of the place told me I ought to
leave it set up.....no use packin up in the rain. The next weekend,
the same thing happened. An on and on and on (check the rain dates
over the last 45 days and you will see what I mean. Last weekend was
sooo dam hot we figured we would pass....btw, THE TEXICAN lives in
Royalston which is only a mile or so away and has been checking on the
camp every coupla days.
Well last night I went to break camp...... AHHGH were the hell is
everything? The B****rds slashed all the lines and took of with
everything.
My only wish would have been to pull away from the dock as they
were pulling in with all my stuff in thier boat. It would have
