737.1 | I'm not exactly a snagger, but... | COLORS::MACINTYRE | In search of the Largemouth Bass | Wed May 25 1988 16:37 | 17 |
| I had this posted in note 186, but it didn't get any response,
so I'll try here...
I'll be heading to Essex Junction, Vermont (right outside of
Burlington) over Memorial Day weekend (leaving Friday morning).
Any recomendations on where to fish for what? I'm open for anything
from flyfishing to trolling.
I'm fishing out of a small 14ft V, so I'll be limited to where I can
go on Champlain.
Oh, what's the scoop on licenses? How much for out-of state, where
do you get them, etc...?

RENE,
Sounds to me like your going to have to do some barttering with
Don for some big lake info!
First you'll have to find out why 706 was deleted?
Then What a Warm Water WEED Sucker would be doing TROLLING in the first
place, trolling in VERMONT is faster than a bass could swim off
it's bed! Unless he was SNAGGING????? AS a fellow lip grabber calls
it!
Then, why the replys to the BASS fishing tourneys can get so big, being
so full of digs and jabs and mud slinging,706 only made it to .14??
I REST MY CASE!
BRING IN THE NEXT LITIGANT RUSTY!

Kevin,
The reason that note 706 probably got deleted is because of we weren't
praising the WWWS species of fish. You know how it is with flatlanders,
they've got this bad attitude about the Green Mountain boys, anyway.
It's not that we can't catch "bass", it's just that there's no logical
reason to do it. I suppose if you can't swim or something like that,
those small protected bay's are the place to be. One thing I'll
never figure out is why they have to boost their ego's with a 150
hp motor on a 14 ft boat.....nuff said!!!

Yeah, really, I mean why would you want to experience the boredom
of a big lunker bass jumping up and inhaling a topwater lure, then
fighting for his life, when you can buy thousands of dollars worth
of electronic equipment and reel up a half-drowned laker that
was STOCKED there.

737.6 | trip report | COLORS::MACINTYRE | In search of the Largemouth Bass | Tue May 31 1988 13:10 | 31 |
| I'll post why that note was deleted in few minutes, I'll see if
I saved the mail I sent to the author of the base note, but first
I'd like to share my experience on fishing in that area.
Many thanks to the gentleman that called me Thursday afternoon and
recomended the Winooski (sp?) river. Sorry to say, I didn't catch
your name.
I launched by the mouth of river on Saturday and fished for 4-5
hours. I quickly found out that Champlain was too much for my boat
and headed into the river. Lots of people fishing, just about all
drifting live bait for walleye, without much success, from what I heard.
I did pretty good, as a matter of fact, it was great! I boated
over 10 smallmouth, a pile of crappie (?) and my first walleye,
that went close to 5lbs! All on a Bagley's DBIII and a small Rapala.
Sunday was spent at the Sandbar on Champlain. My brother-in-law
was throwing his annual company picnic at the state park there, I
didn't fish a whole lot, went out 3 times for an hour or so. Caught
a 3.5lb largemouth, a 5lb pike (again, my first of the species), a bunch
of pickeral, and a pile of perch.
I was real impressed with the fishery up there, and plan on visiting
these in-laws more often. Again, thanks to the gentleman who was
nice enough to share some of his fishing know-how to help make my
trip more enjoyable. After all, that's what this file is for.
Thanks again,
Don Mac

| Here's the mail I sent to the originator...
Sorry, but the "Burlington, Vermont" note has been deleted. I originally
changed the title from something to do with Walleyes, to Burlington, Vermont
because it was obvious that walleye fishing was not being discussed. The later
replies ended up just a bunch of ball busting, which called for deletion.
It was decided some time ago to cut the ball bustin, name calling, etc.,
because too many people were not happy with it. So, we decided to keep it
to a minimum (which means no entire topics just for bustin). Sorry, to to have
to delete them, but that's the rules. This doesn't mean you can't pull a
few punches now and then, but we have agreed to keep to a minimum.
Don Mac - comoderator of fishing notes
From Note 1.1, the rules note:
> One or two lines of mud slinging in the body of your note is fine,
> but an entire note of mud slinging is not. Let's not waste *too*
> much space...
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
It appeared to me that the note was 90% mud slinging.
A year or so ago (before I was co-moderator) the notesfile was probably
50% ball busting... (and I was probably one of the top offenders)... alot
of people started complaining to the moderator that the file was out of hand...
eventually the file got to the point where the mudslinging turned into rather
crude and somewhat offensive attacks... then people really got uptight and
started to complain... eventually Gene (the #1 moderator, who at the time
wasn't spending much time reading the notes file) said that's enough, and
imposed new rules (the ones that we now go by) - and asked for help with the
moderation, to which I volunteered.........
That note was being used to bust balls. Just like all of us use to do -
we had to stop doing it, and we can't let others start - or else the whole
cycle will start over again...
Moderating is tough... I don't enjoy having to delete peoples notes...
but.. to keep the file under control (which means keeping it here for us)
we have to impose some rules.....
I apologize if I was out of line deleting that note, but I don't think
I was.

weekend for 2nd place in the PLATTSBURGH NY ROTARY fishing derby.

| Don Mac,
Sorry about the "busting"! I was probably the guy who made you decide
to pull the file. Funny part is, I was having fun and I thought
everyone els was too. Nothing healthier than sitting here giggling
as you are "busting" some guy (Wheel) for taking a shot at snaggers.
Again, there was ABSOLUTLY NOTHING said in a serious vein---simply
having fun!!
Tell Al I'd be more than willing to take him out for some good Salmon
Fishing on the big "O". (I like to catch Bass too and go on a "Bassin"
trip every year at my brother's camp on Hickory Lake.)
Meanwhile, I'll try to keep my "Busting" to a minimum (this is going
to be tough---like quitting smoking)!

Hi Don,
Champlain has a real good landlock salmon program. The fish have
been getting good size. They would be getting alot bigger if they
could get the lamprey program under way!!!!!NY and VT have been
working hand and hand to get it iniciated.the sooner the better!
The prize winning salmon was 8.3lbs,Real nice fish, the guy that
won with it had the fish at the awards banquet. That fish had one
lamprey hit on it!without the lamprey hanging off it for who knows
how long the fish might have been in the nine to ten pound class!
We've seen salmon that were almost unrecognizable because they
had so many hits on them.
The laker we caught had four old hits on it.
I believe the record for Champlain is around eleven to twelve lbs.
let us know if your
up this way.

737.14 | SALMON AND MORE SALMON | USRCV1::FRASCH | | Wed Jun 01 1988 20:26 | 23 |
| REDEYE,
I lived in Ithaca, NY for 5 years (Cayuga Lake) and did a lot of
landlock salmon fishing. We ha lampray problems that kept them to
4 or 5 lbs. DEC put in Lampricide 3 years ago and now they run 10
to 15 lbs regularly--- it works. I think a 15 lb landlock is more
fun and better eating than a 15 lb chinook.
Up here on the "O" (Rochester) we get chinooks in the spring from
10 to 30 lbs. They go another 10 heavier in the fall. Lakers will
run 10 to 20 lbs, but not many locals even keep them. They taste
"Fishy" compared to a Salmon or Brown (they run up to 25 lbs).
Personally, I prefer the local Browns at 5 to 10 lbs done on a
charcoal grill !!!!! (died and went to heavan)
My hope is a Smoker for father's day so I can smoke up the salmon
I have in the freezer.
I have been to Burlington twice with Kodak folks for plant visits.
Next time I'll stay over and get some "Snaggin Time" in.

| Hey REDEYE,
You were in the wrong place in the Spring!! Go another hour west
to Sodus Bay. Its great thru june for Browns, Rainbows, Coho and
Chinook (in that order). If you want Chinook, go another 3 hrs to
Niagara and fish the "Niagara Bar". We got 18 Chinooks in the E.S.L.O.
derby and fished Thursday, Friday PM (2 hrs) and saturday. They
ran 12 to 23 lbs. Got 1 Laker and threw him back.
For fall, your in the right spot at Oswego to Sandy Creek. Off teh
mouth of Salmon River (South) is great. Try swinging in close a
few times with shallow downriggers and planner boards and you might
scare yourself!!!!
Remind me about your trip later this summer!

I didn't go on the big O fishing..it was an all day charter

To be perfectly honest I forgot what you said in the late 706 note..

that we landed all the fish and failed to lose half of them..????

| Al,
Now I REALLY have to appologize for the 706. I thought you were
on the big "O"!!! I made some reference to the snaggers (professionals)
throwing Lakers back in. On "O", we get a lot of Coho, Chinooks,
Browns and Steelheads, so Lakers (taste fishy) don't get treated
as a "Priority" catch. I'm not sure Champlain produces that much
variety. I think landlocked salmon are in there, but smaller because
of the Lamprey problems. Those Chinooks will run 40 lbs in the fall
on "O". I suspect a 5 lb landlock is a good fish on Champlain.
I want to get some time on Champlain to see what its like and then
I'll give you a "charter" on my boat on "O" and see if we can convert
you to a "professional snagger" (you can still catch those W.W.W.S.
fish for practice).
The thing that would REALLY convert you is a shore dinner with Salmon
done on a charcoal grill !!!

Don,
It's getting to the time of year when my buddy Wendall of
"Wendall's reef has his annual fish fry/smoke....
We go out and catch "anything and every thing"
We fry up bass, perch, rockies, punkinseeds, northerns, pickerel,
and then smoke up some salmon, trout, and whatever......
Wendall will make a huge batch of his famous fish chowder and
brew up a keg of the darkest beer you've ever seen.
Topped of with huge batches of homemade french fries....
All fish can be prepared to taste great if you know how, cause
beleive me I thought I would never be eating punkies and rockies
but thanks to Capt. Wendall's secret formula we eat them all
the time...
Well, got to go.....I've got to get me some balloons for the
derby next week..(the snaggers are saying.."huh..???)

| Al,
I agree on "If you know how to cook em"---, but when your catching
salmon and browns, the lakers just don't cut it.
I love punkies, rockies and perch. Problem is, once you get spoiled
on a fillet that runs 7 or 8 lbs, fooling with punkies, etc takes
a ton of time. My favorite fish is perch. Got a bucket full last
year (about 60) with the kids on minnows and cleaned them with
an electric knife. Real easy, fillet and skin two a minute! Add
a little butter and a frying pan (plus a beer or two) and "it don't
get any better---".

737.31 | | HOZZER::MARTY | | Fri Oct 07 1988 13:09 | 25 |
| Don,
The fish run up the river from the lake in the spring to
spawn...This doesn't mean that there might not be a few
scattered in the river here and there, but I would think
it pretty unlikely. If the weather conditions are good try going
straight out the mouth of the winooski into the lake. It stays
very shallow for a few hundred yards and then drops off very deep,
I believe it goes down to 280' or so. Troll this area in the evening
with rappala floaters and divers. The fish should be in the top 10'
of water. With the water temp at around 57 or so in the open lake
there probably right on top so I'd start with a floater, probably
in a silver with purple back pattern. You might also want to try
a rebel floater with the white sides and blue back. These are pretty
hot when the fish are on top and tend to produce nice salmon and
laketrout as well (which by the way, are reported to be schooling
at the mouth of the winooski right now). Anyways, the bass and pike
fishing is supposed to be hot right now too. I heard a report from
a couple of guys that they picked up about 30 bass in a 5 hour period
up on the northern part of the lake.
Just as a side note, a 5lb walleye is about average in size for
Champlain. I'd waite for a 7 or 8 lber before considering mounting
it. Good luck and let us know how you do.
Marty (who's put down the rod for the bow hunting season)
