79.0. "Camping and Fishing" by TORCH::MACINTYRE (Don Mac, DECmate S/W Development) Wed Mar 12 1986 15:46

There was some discussion on this in an earlier note, but I couldn't locate
it...

I'm looking for places to camp and fish (from a canoe or a power boat).

Either a river/lake/pond where I can pull up my canoe on a natural beach and
setup camp or a campground on a larger lake that has facilities for boats.

I've been camping on the water for years, but this will be the first year
that fishing will be one of my top priorities.

Any suggestions? don mac

    Don,

I picked up a lot of literature at the outdoor show last weekend
on the very same subject. Lake George in NY is great for camping
and canoeing. I did a 2 week run on the lake with friends about
12 years ago and the brochures brought back a lot of memories and
a desire to make a repeat trip. Camping facilities abound, including
sites on several islands (there's even a convenience store on one
small island). Just watch out for the racoons --- I woke up one
night with one perched on my chest. I can't personally testify
to the fishing, but the literature makes it sound pretty good.
I think it'd be best to avoid the busy season (while school's out)
to minimize the recreational pressure on the fishing.

Hmm, sounds interesting, I've never been to Lake George for more
any length of time (I used to pick up and drop off small sailboats
there years ago, but never had the time to look around). Sounds
like a place where you'd have to spend more than a weekend, probably
be fun cruiz'n around in a boat for a few days.

I found the earlier note that I mentioned, #3, there was some
discussion on Umbagog, has anyone else tried that place out since
    then?

79.3A local place to go.ASGMKB::TOMASJoeWed Mar 12 1986 17:0314
On a more local nature, Pawtuckaway Lake in Nottingham-Raymond has
some excellent bass fishing and has some shoreline areas that you
can camp on. There are even several small islands that are uninhabited
that would make a nice camp site. In fact, if you do it in mid
to late August, the place is LOADED with blueberries that you can
    pick right from the boat.

Although Pawtuckaway is pretty populated and boat traffic heavy
on the weekends, the weekdays are fairly quiet. In fact, my fishin
buddy and I are contemplating an overnighter there.

See me for directions as to where to launch.

I got some info on Lake Umbagog, while at Campers Inn at lunch, I grabbed a
brochure. They say that fishing "has been good to fair in recent years", they
mention landlocked salmon, brook trout, pickeral, etc., but no bass - looking
at the picture of the lake in the brochure it seems strange that there are
NO bass there.

I tried Umbagog in September last year for a weekend, but it
was a last minute decision and did not do much fishing at all.
The lake itself is beautiful, peaceful, and just outstanding..!
We camped at the main camp, not on an island. From what the
operator of the camps said, I assume that there are no bass
in the lake...!!! He was very friendly and very honest about
the fishing not being very good at the time we were there...
The weekend that we were there was the last weekend that they
were open for the season. Even though we did not do much fishin
and only caught a few small perch, it was well worth the trip
to get out into GODS country and leave the "RAT RACE" behind...!!!

    don,
i stayed there twice last year, in their cabins. the owners are
very friendly and good hosts. the owners make it a rule the all
noise end by 10 o'clock or else, this is a family oriented place.
there were many people out on the lake but i did not fish it.
COOS County is not the place for bass fishing, i do not think the
state lists a single bass pond in the whole county. but for trout
and salmon it can't be beat in the state.

Geez, real slow in here latley...

Has anyone ever fished in Pilsbury (NH) State Park?

    It's a wilderness type of park, 7 ponds on 5K acres, w/ only 20
campsites. The new wife and I plan on camping there next week.
The campsites are on May pond, so I can crawl right out the
tent and into the canoe! Anyone familiar with this area???

I was at Spag's about 2 months back and picked up a brochure
on Lake Pemmiquid near Damariscotta (sp?), Maine (a little bit up
the road from Bar Harbor). The brochure made it sound so nice that
I called the next day and made reservations for next week. They
describe it as 7 miles of lake (3 lakes actually) and only 5 miles
from the Atlantic ocean. I was wondering if anyone has been there
and if so, what their opinion is of it. If nobody has, I will enter
a reply here when I get back. I entered a note in the Hiking and
Camping notes file and never got any response. I wish I'd found
    this note earlier.

79.10Pilsbury State ParkTORCH::MACINTYRELife's great, then u live forever.Mon Jun 30 1986 13:4426
This time I WILL answer my own question, on Pilsbury State Park

I went there this weekend, wanted to see it in person before showing
up there to camp/fish for 3-4 days.

The largest pond, the one that the campsites are on, is May Pond.
The water is crystal clear, and the ranger said that there's bass
in there. It's a great canoe pond, there were about 6 canoes on
the water, and more along the campsites. If your not camping there,
the put-in requires a carry down a steep hill, with rocks and a
big log at the bottom. This wouldn't be too bad for a canoe.

However, I brought my new toy with me, so it was a royal pain.
(After work, Friday, I picked up a brandy new 14ft flat bottom,
with a brandy new 4.5hp Merc) Once I got in the water, while
buzzing across the middle of the pond, I happened to notice
LARGE ROCKS sticking up about 4 inches under the water. So,
I decided that I didn't want to wipe out my brand new lower
unit and turned around and went home.

So for a canoe, this looks like a real nice place for a weekend
camping/fishing trip. But, since I'll be wanting to use new
toy this next weekend, I'll pass on my previous plans to camp there
    next weekend...

This will teach me to finish reading replies before leaving

    	re:.9

I guess I will also have to answer my own question about Lake
Pemmaquid. I'm afraid I can't offer any first hand knowledge though
as in 2 fishing outings on the lake, I didn't catch anything but
a cold. For those that are interested, the campground is very nice.
I would suggest launching your boat first thing, as we checked out
the site first and found it very difficult to turn around with the
trailer as our site was on a very narrow penninsula. After launching
though, the site (#40) was nice and we could beach the boat right
there and go out on it anytime we felt the urge.

As for fishing, the lake is pretty large, and deep! The people
at the boat house said that they had lake trout, perch, bass, and
some other species present in the lake. A topographical map is
available at the store for $.10 or I will send a copy of mine if
you're interested. I used nite-crawlers in the deep sections trying
for trout, and shiners in the shallow areas trying for bass. As
I said though, I had no luck bringing home any supper. (We wound
up going to Booth Bay Harbor for a Lobster/Steamers supper at Ken
    Greys.)

Well, sorry I couldn't supply any real info on Lake Pemmaquid
Camping, but since I'm a novice at fishing maybe someone who lives
closer would like to give it a try an let the rest of you know how
    it really is.

    /Pete

P.S. Maybe it was a bad omen when I found out that Damariscotta
         means "River of little fishes".
79.14Basin Campground/WMNFJETSAM::COREYMon Aug 04 1986 19:5314
You might want to try Basin Pond in the WMNF along route 113, north
of Fryeburg, ME. I spent some time up there this weekend. Nice
Forest Service campground there. Pretty peaceful and there were
camp sites available all weekend which is pretty good for the middle
of the summer. The pond there is about 7 Acres and is small, but
the info boards at the camp ground claim it is one of the best trout
ponds in NH. I put in my small Coleman Crawdad boat and paddled
around since no motors are allowed. Sorry to say I didn't have
any luck, but they were jumping all around me! Lots of nice streams
leading into the pond whiched looked promising too. Not crowded
but there were some real serious-looking fly fishermen there trying
    their luck too.

I don't know if you ever got to do your camping this summer,
but Tully Lake in Royalston has a significant lake in which my brother
has had fair luck fishing AND the State has a 'primitive' campground
right on the shoreline (only tents). I haven't spent any time on the big
lake, but there is a connecting stream to another 'Long Pond' which
is chuck full of stumps & trees & other structure. You might give it
a try...

A great place is on the Conn River, north of barton's cove.
Run the river up past the French King Bridges and on you right about
half way to NH (NH is 5 bridges) is a state runn camp ground.
It is free and primitive. The only access is by boat. There is
a very nice dock there to tie up on. Its first come first serve
and there is a very limited number of sites.

79.17Some Places and a QuerySMURF::PETERBAKERFri Aug 22 1986 21:2328
    Some Places

Russell Pond, in North Woodstock, NH is a good camp/fish pond:
40 acres. brook trout. flies/worms ok. It is a White Mountain
campsite. about 80 sites and clean.

Umbagog: been there several times (through the Willards at Umbagog
Lake Camps. Best site is #14, an island in Sunday Cove at north
end. Island keeps bugs minimized; best fishing there to Rapid River
(although it is not that good, really).

Does anybody know about other camp/fish places for canoes, easy
access, tent camping? I am curious about:

o Dan Hole Pond (there is a commercial campground there...)

o Little Diamond Pond (Colebrook), a state park

        o Ponds around Pittsburg

I have an 11-year old son I take, so it is too much for me to
lug canoe alone through boondocks to get to places. Besides,
    I'm lazy.

    Cheers,

79.18Dan Hole Pond CampgroundCURIE::DOTYRuss Doty, ESGMon Aug 25 1986 00:2213
The campground at Dan Hole Pond is Terrace Pines. A nice campground
-- plenty of trees, good sites, plenty of restrooms. Dan Hole Pond
itself is noted for salmon and requires firly large boats. I haven't
fished it. Little Dan Hole Pond is a fair sized pond (or small
lake) with quite a few camp sites directly on the water. We have
been there several times late in the season, and gotten lakefront
sites and no crowding. Unfortunately, there are no fish in Little
Dan Hole Pond (except a few yellow perch). (This is from the
    campground owners and personal experience).

So, Terrace Pines is nice for camping (for a commercial campground),
Little Dan Hole Pond is pretty and nice for canoes, and Dan Hole
Pond is for serious salmon fishermen
79.19Basin Pond CG - WMNFJETSAM::COREYMon Aug 25 1986 14:0513
Another good one is Basin Pond Campground in the White Mtn. Natl
Forest. The WMNF literature boasts that it is one of the best trout
ponds in NH. Always lots of fly fishermen there. They allow boats
and canoes on the pond, but NO motors. I've seen the trout in there,
but they are a wary lot. My guess is that the pond is about 8-10
acres. Campground is very nice, clean and is one of the few in
the WMNF with flush toilets. Located on north of Fryeburg, ME on
    Rt. 113.

Knight Island Campground, on Lake Champlain, near North Hero, VT
is a great place to kick back. The island is a mile by a half mile
and there are only 7 campsites on it. The fishing is great for large
and smallmouth bass, and pike. The campsites are primitive, but
beautiful. A 14' V-bottom boat is about the smallest I'd go for
Champlain, which can really kick up in a hurry. Contact me for more
    info.

A couple suggestions come to mind: Pittsfield State Forest has

    1. I don't know about reservations ... I used to live close by
and never had trouble getting a site ... leads me to believe that
    there were none.

    2. Berry Pond is on the top of a mountain and very cold, rather
inhospitable as far as bass are concerned. In addition to trout,
there are yellow perch I believe.

The scenery is beautiful, the mountain is covered with wild azaleas
that bloom in June and blueberry bushes abound for picking in July.
The location is relatively remote and includes the coldest swimming
hole I've found in August (spring fed), lots of trails for hiking
and some other facilities such as softball fields, etc.

On route 20 between Huntington and Chester there is the
Chester-Blandford state forest. Across the road is the West
branch of the Westfield River. There is a camping area, but
be warned, there is a railroad close by.

Directions : From Mass. Turnpike exit 3, turn right, go to
center of town, right on route 20. You'll pick up the
river about 2 miles out. The 3 branches converge in Huntington.
In H. you can take a right on Rte.112 an go up to the
Knightville and Littleville reservoirs. Littleville holds
water for boats. Knightville is empty except for the east
branch. You can drive down into the reservoir. If you take the
turn in the reservoir and proceed to the gate, you are at
the Catch-and-release area. My partner and i fish there,
hitting on rainbows 12-16" and occasional browns. No crowds,
nice hiking, plenty of wildlife. (This past Sunday we saw
a deer, a snapping turtle, a porcupine and a garter snake
    all within the reservoir.)

If you stay at the state forest, go west on 20 a mile or so
and take a right. Go over the railroad tracks, then the river.
Just over the river is a dirt road which provides good access
to some nice holes. Good luck. Dana_who_catches_fish_(sometimes)

P.S. On 20 just before the turnpike underpass is a bait shop -
B & G's. WELL worth the stop - good mdse., good prices, good advice.
    fresh live bait, tackle etc.

    DON MAC,

I HAVE JUST RETURNED FROM A FISHING TRIP TO PITTSBURG N.H. WHICH
IS ABOUT 12 MILES FROM THE CANADIAN BORDER. I INVESTIGATED A FEW
CAMPGROUNDS WHILE IN THE AREA AND I MUST SAY THEY ARE BEAUTIFUL.
MY SUGGESTION WOULD BE TO TRY EITHER THE LAKE FRANCIS STATE PARK
CAMPGROUND OR THE MOOSE FALLS STATE CAMPGROUND. THEY ARE ABOUT 8
MILES APART ON RT 3 IN PITTSBURG. ALL OF THE CONNETICUT LAKES HAVE
PUBLIC BOAT ACCESS AND GOOD FISHING. HOWEVER; IN THE CONNETICUT
LAKES I WOULD FEEL MORE AT EASE IN A POWER BOAT THAN A CANOE IF
THE WEATHER IS WINDY AND THE WATER IS ROUGH. ON CALM DAYS THE CANOEIING
WOULD BE ABSOULTELY TREMENDOUS. THERE IS GOOD FLY FISHING IN THE
CONNETICUT RIVER BETWEEN THE FIRST, SECOND, AND THIRD CONNETICUT
LAKES AND THERE IS GOOD TROUT IN ALL OF THE LAKES.

I MUST ADMIT THAT WE DIDN'T HAVE TO MUCH LUCK THIS PAST WEEKEND
UP THERE, BUT I THINK THINGS WILL IMPROVE FAST. THE MOOSE PICTURE
TAKING ALONG ROUTE 3 IS SOMETHING ELSE; THEY ARE ALL OVER THE PLACE
    UP THERE.

THERE IS EVEN PUBLIC ACCESSS TO BACK LAKE WHICH IS GOOD FOR A CANOE.
THE LAKE IS HEAVILY STOCKED WITH RAINBOWS, BROOKIES, AND BROWNS.
THIS LAKE ABOUT 3 MILES FROM THE LAKE FRANCIS STATE PARK.

I PLAN TO TAKE A WEEK AND DO SOME CAMPING UP IN THAT AREA ALONG
WITH TAKING IN UMBAGOG CAMPGROUND IN ERROL AND SOUTH ARM ANDOVER
MAINE. THIS WILL ALSO GIVE ME SOMETIME TO LOOK FOR REALESTATE.

I'm trying to plan a long weekend camping either on Cape Cod,
Martha's Vineyard or Nantucket. I want to bring a 19 footer along
with me to do some fishing. Does anyone know of a place with
launching facilties near a camping area? Better yet would be
a facility that you can leave the boat in the water. Thanks,

79.30Ferry is big $$WHIRL::EPRESTONMon Jul 17 1989 16:0120
    Marty,

There's a nice campground at Martha's Vineyard called, if I remember
correctly, Family Camp Ground in Vineyard Haven. It is not on the
water, however. I have no idea where you could launch your boat,
but you could call the campground or the Martha's Vineyard chamber
    of commerce.

If you are planning to tow your boat behind you car, then you must
be planning to take the rig on the MV Ferry. Getting a reservation
is almost a necessity, unless you want to wait at the ferry terminal
on standby. Could be a looooong wait! Then you have to pay for the
car and trailer, *and* everybody who goes with you. Not cheap! I
say, if you want to go camping at Martha's Vineyard, then just camp.
There's plenty to do there without - dare I say it - fishing, and
you can even leave the car behind and rent mopeds or bikes, or just
take the bus wherever you need to go. It's a very nice place to
visit, even if you don't fish!

Thanks Ed...hmmm, no fishing...that's tough to take...it would
probably make the SO happy though ! :-) I didn't realize the ferry
would be that expensive. It might be worth putting in somewhere
on the coast and cruising out. Someone was telling me that in years
past you could moor your boat in the harbour and get
a water taxi in and out to your boat by blowing your horn. If we
could rent mopeds that would work out great...Does anyone know
    if this is still true?

Take your boat and follow the ferry. This is good for two reasons: Safer (
your boat can go anywhere the ferry can) and you won't get lost. I went to
Nantucket over July 4th weekend and there was a parade of little (comparatively
speaking) boats behind the ferry.

If I new I had a place to dock the boat when I got there I'd go
for it. The ferry's are way more then I thought. It would be about
    170$ for two people (7.50 ea.), a jeep (53.00) and boat (1.90/ft
measured from the ball to the prop), round trip to Martha's, and
Nantucket is a lot more then Martha's, so towing the boat seems
out. There isn't any camping areas on Nantucket, but Martha's has
two. I may opt for the outer cape instead. Has anyone ever been
fishing around the Orleans area? It looked like a good location
from the map, and there's several camping areas near by according
to the "Insiders Guide To The Cape And Islands" that the SO picked
    up yesterday.

There is exellent boating/fishing in the Orleans area (bay side).
I've been Bluefishing out of Orleans (Rock Harbor) a number of times
and have never gone home empty. There are lots of places to explore
and even P'town isnt that far of a ride. Somehwere in this file there
is a lengthy dicussion including a suggested itinery for a day or two
on the bay..may be the author can point you to it?

79.35Camping/Fishing Recommendations? TSDOC::BERRYWed Aug 15 1990 19:0226
Hi,

My boyfriend and I would like to get away over labor day. I know this is one
of the worst times to go, but I'd like some recommendations anyway.

The two big concerns are Good Fishing and Quiet.

We like to fish trout, white perch and some bass. We also prefer to use a
canoe. I would like to find a small lake/pond or river within 3+ hours of
Boston that does not allow power boats.

We also want something quiet. He would like to rent someone's rustic cabin
but I think we are more likely to be able to get something camping. We have
access to all necessary tenting equipment. We DON't need RV hook-ups,
electricity, Rec Halls, Camp Stores, and all the fro-froos that come with
most over-crowded camp areas. Showers are nice but even those are not
necessary as long as I can get access to clean water somewhere.

We would like something that we can drive the car to because most of the
camping equipment is to big and heavy to backpack in.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Priscilla

    Hello again,

You may want to check out the last few replies in topic 16 (Upper Conn.
River). There's recent info there since few of us from the file are
setting up a fishing/camping trip up there for the following week.
That area is supposed to be real good that time of year for rainbows
and smallmouth - and may be out of the way enough for you to be able to
get a campsite for laborday weekend.

If your interested in that area, I have a couple phone numbers
for campgrounds, both in Littleton, NH.

    	Crazy Horse Family Campground (603)444-2204
    	KOA-Littleton (603)838-5525

I got these numbers from a campground directory, haven't been to
either. I know Crazy Horse is .5 miles to a boat launch onto Moore
    Resevoir.

    good luck, donmac

I camped at Crazy Horse a couple of summers ago. I wasn't that
impressed really. The toilet facilities were not clean at all and the
majority of the showers weren't working. Hopefully they've cleaned up
their act since I was there. Either way, they'll not see my face around
    there again.

Thanks for the feedback.

If the Youngs Cabins that you referred to are the ones
in Pittsburg,N.H. Then I'd put in a vote for them. Nice location,
clean and very friendly owners. Lot's of fishing in the area too.
    Mostly cold water fish though.

Question for the Gallery!

I wish in the next 6 weeks or so, to spend a week of camping and fishing
as my vacation for this year. The hard part is finding a good spot with
no experience of the area. So I've been petitioned by the "group" to try
the notesfile and see what we can learn. I plan on going with 3 other guy's
who have considerable fishing experience. But, here's where I need your help.

What we would like to find is a Lake that isn't overrun with R.V's and people,
We are willing to drive the distance to get away from that type of "camping",
we would like someplace that is fairly remote. A place where you can camp
right on the lake and they rent boats. We are not going to be bringing a boat
so the renting of a boat is important. Do places like this exist?

If the place you have in mind has a Cabin,...Great! that means we won't have
to have our "supply Sergeant" bring his old Army "GP" Medium "CP" Tent.

I did a "Dir/keyword=camping" and read all those entries but found them all
to be from a long time ago. Has anyone gone on any recent camping/fishing
on public or private property that turned out to be an epic adventure? Anyone
have any phone numbers of owners, or people I could call to make reservations?

David,

I spent a weekend in June at the Birches in Litchfield, Me. It is located on
Cobbosseecontee lake....GREAT Smallmouth fishing, plenty of largemouth as
well....They have cabin rentals and boats as well...Tel# 207-268-4330. It is
located about 10 miles west of Augusta....

Good Luck,

We use to go to a place called Bose Buck Mountain Camps on
Lake Aziscohos, Wilson Mills Me. I don't have the number handy
but directory assistance should have it...Bose Buck has cabins
right on the water. There's a main lodge where they serve your
meals, and will cook up the days catch if you want...they pack
you a lunch to take with you for the day. They rent boats and
motors, and also have guides available if you want. The cost
including meals use to be 50$ a day per person. Boat and motor
was 17$ a day. Fishing is for trophy brook trout (up to 4lbs)
and salmon. Aziscohos is about 4 hrs from concord NH...It's very
remote, 15 miles long and about a half mile wide...we always had
a good time and although I never caught a monster trout, I did catch
an 18 in Brookie, which is my all time best, and also netted a
4lb landlocked salmon, which they bake stuffed that night and served
to our table along with the regular evening meal, lobster....it
    was great!

I made a number of phone calls to the places you all suggested. Some
of them were all booked up, after talking with Bruce (.42) I decided
to reserve a cabin at the Birches in Litchfield Me.

I'll be heading up there on the 15th til the 22nd. When I get back
I'll let you know how it went. Thanks a billion for all the help!

If this is the place I'm thinking of, the best fishing I've found
there was limited to a little river. Looking out from the swimming
beach you'd take a left and it was on the right hand shoreline going
down. It had a 90 degree bend with an old boat house that I took 3 bass
off of. A little further down from here was a downed treein the water
that I took a 5lb'er off. All of this was within about 20 minutes and
    during a tournament.

REF 45.

Give me a call at 276-9232.....For you other folks, Cobbie is 16 miles
long and 3 miles wide and has ALOT of fish. Our club had a tourney there this
spring and 124 bass were caught by 64 bassassins, which is an average of approx
2 per person, 3 fish limit in Maine during that time of year, I had a friend go
back during labor day week and he caught on a average of 30# of bass each day,
all largemouth....He was able to catch 6 fish over 7# with the largest being
a 9.2# beauty.... If I didn't mention it, he only fished half of each day, wife
was with him... I have been fishing for bass serious for 2 years and in my
humble opinion this has to be one of the best place's to fish I have ever seen.
By the way if I didn't mention it, I came in 3rd during that tourney, all
smallie's with a total weight of 8.6#. The tourney started at 7:00 and both
the boater and I were culling by 8:00, we had to have culled 20 fish that day.
Winning weight was 11.3 all largemouths.

WHAT A GREAT TIME......

    Hi again,

One other thing I'd like to add; when I entered my first note
looking for recommendations for places to go, I have to say that
this place (the Birches) fit the bill perfectly.

Thanks first goes to this notesfile and then to Bruce Judson for
    being incredibly helpful. Thanks again!
