33.0. "GOOD FISHING VIDEOS" by TRACTR::DOWNS () Fri Nov 08 1985 10:47

Now that winter is approaching in New England, I'm getting
the rod building equipment and fishing books out again. I've
recently purchased a VCR and have been thinking about seeing
some good instructional/entertainment type films about
fishing in general. Has anyone seen any worth
viewing/recording?

Last night i watched a film called "Nymphing" by Gary Borger. It was ok
but i understand that Dave Witlock has a nymphing tape out that is much
better.

I guess you guys are right! I'll give it a try this weekend
if it is a half way decent Saturday. Mean while though, I
had the opportunity to see a film "Flyfishing For Trout" by
Gary Borger. I liked it so much I recorded it for future
reviewings. This film covers alot of basic stuff and is good
as a reference type, instructional source. I haven't seen
his "Nymphing" film mentioned in an earlier response but
will keep my eyes open. I liked this Borger's film best
because the information was presented in a clear, orderly
manner. The camera men also seemed to know what they were
doing also so it made for some nice shots and an
entertaining atmosphere. I'd recommend this one to anyone
interested in flyfishing especially if your a stream
fishermen.

I also saw a film called "Bass Fishing From Top To Bottom"
and I was not too impressed. It's probably worth renting on
dollar night but I felt it wasn't worth recording. The
camera work was not that great, infact it seemed that on
some pieces there was only one guy doing all the filming
from one angle. Also, the pro who was doing the instruction
tasks, was talking to fast and had such a southern type
accent that I had trouble, at times, understanding him. If you
see this film, let me now how you felt about it?

	RE: .5

Where do you go to rent fishing videos?? Also, what formats
do they have (VHS & BETA, or just one..)

	Thanks,

I live in Milford, NH. and have rented VHS tapes from "Video
Village" near the IGA food store and "Cinema Scope Video" at
the Edgewood Shopping Center. The second source has a better
selection. Most of the larger video rental stores have these
tapes and usually store them with the exercise films.
These fishing and hunting instructional tapes seem to be growing
in popularity and I believe there will be more and better
selections in the future.
Don't forget to let us know if the one's you pick are any
good!!

OK, Back to the fishing video's.

I just rented one of the 3M tapes titled "Anatomy of a trout stream".

Its primarily concerned with Western type spring creek water (Filmed on
the "Take it easy ranch".) but its really quite good. Gives a good over-
veiw of different stream/river area's such as riffles, runs, flats and
pools, reading each respective type of water, techniques to apply and
some suggestions concerning types of flies for each water. Most of this
stuff applies equally well to our typical Maine freestone streams and
rivers.

Additionally there are some GREAT shots of the expert hooking and losing some
massive "bows" and actually holding his comments to himself.

All in all a good tape and worth renting and copying by the flyfisherman.

If the other tapes in the 3M Leisuretime collection (there are quite a
few) are up to this quality I would plan on gettin them all.

                                                     Tight lines

33.14A 'SPECTACULER' VIDEOWFOOFF::WHITTEMORE_JWed Jan 25 1989 15:1618
Just found this topic and here's my suggestion for a
dynomite SALMON video - 'SALMON SPECTACULAR' by a guy named White
    (Bill Tom Bob or something).

It's a FANTASTIC underwater video that ends with the landing
of a salmon that weighs over ............ well you'll see.

I rented this one a second time to 'prime' my buddy and I for
our first charter to lake Ontario (Aug. 1988). It worked.

         ***** You've just gotta see this one! It's a must! *****

    RE: .13

Ed, I've got a copy of the tape you suggested. I also have a
copy of "Nymph Fishing" with Gary Borger and also "Fly Fishing
for Trout". The only one I was overly impressed with is "The
    Dry Fly" with Hal Jannsen.

    RE: .14

Joe, are you talking about Charlie White? He has a video out
on salmon fishing. I went to see him at a seminar he put on
in Burlington years ago. He had cameras on 2 downriggers and
also had 2 downriggers with line and lures. He showed actual
footage of BIG salmon going from one lure to another and showing
the fish's color preferences, etc. He also showed how fish react
to the different scents (Dr. Juice, et al.). He kept pushing
the use of solunar tables for fishing, especially in the ocean.
