1325.0. "OFFICIAL CHAT NOTE." by DNEAST::BAKER_CHUCK (Human Input Required...) Sat Nov 20 1993 09:33

Since many of the official topic notes have become cluttered with
non-related chatter I've created this note as a place to move such
    clutter to.

So, if you have nontopic things to say please put them here. Note:
I absolutely do not want to discourage such chatter, that's what makes
this file seem so friendly. I just want to have a place to put such
    things.

    Guys,

I didn't get out this weekend (Was going to go Muzzleloading Saturday
for a doe, but didn't), but a friend of mine(used to be a taxidermist)
helped me mount one of my bucks that I bow killed this year. Talk
about really interesting. I had an absolute blast! It was a pain
fleshing him out, but one I got him on the form and started working
with him, I got excited. I guess I spent about 8 hours this weekend
on it and he is drying. I will put the finishing touches on him
Saturday (airbrush the nose and eyes). I killed him Oct 1 and he had
a "summer coat", which really shows the detail of the form.

I know most never have the opportunity to try it but if you ever do,
    don't pass it up.

Well since most of this is just chitter chatter this would be th best
    note to enter it in.
12/30/93 I arrived in PA, met my step dad to go out on the green tag
farm closest to us, I called the farmer and found out he has ~400 acres
we arrive there and embark on a journey to find the elusive whitetails.
the 3.5 hours in the woods proved futile, lotsa tracks and sign but no
deer spotted several shots heard on the opposite side of the road I
guess we picked the wrong side to go on *)) oh well.
12/31 met stepdad (Pat) aat 8:00 30mph winds 14degrees brrrr, with bow
in hand we depart to put some small drives on for each other, first
drive we get 2 deer up, go below me about 50 yrds away grrrr, they run
over into the christmas tree farm and 1 met her dismay when she ran by
someone with a muzzleloader. we decided to go out to the back of the
farm so we wouldnt push deer to someone else since they were very calm
    after the regular season.
we had several other deer up but couldnt connect, so I went back to
get the wife and chainsaw to cut a load of firewood, I wanted to go out
to the back part of the farm, so I am going out the old tramroad and we
get to the powerline and I told the wife you watch now that I dont have
my bow those deer will be just on the other side of the power line in
the grapevine....s there they are all 5 of them!! 30 yards away!!
standing there looking at us in the truck! one takes off across the
tramroad and runs out into the field and stops about 30 yards away! by
now I am cursing myself for being unpreparedoh well I got work to do so
on out the tram road and turn into the woods on the logging road 4 deer
go blazin by the truck. so I cut my load of firewood and loaded it up.

I then went into town to the lumber yard to get turkey wire, the guy
at the yard started chatting, "so where ya feedin turkeys at" me "our
farm out behind beela" him "really where at" me "next farm up from the
christmas tree farm" him "did you buck hunt there this year" me "yeap"
him " are you the one that got the big seven pt. that should have been
an 8 pt but the one brow tine was broke off?" me " yeah I got a big 7
pt. who told you about it?" him " well a guy was in here telling me
that his buddy saw it hanging out there" all I said to him was well
that buck came from new york....by now I was to the point where I had
to change the topic of conversation before I blew my top, to clarify
why I was P oed I hung this deer up at 10:30 PM on 11/24/93 and
butchered him on 11/27/93 at 5:00 pm. the whole time this deer hung
INSIDE our barn! so this person who told this guy about my deer had to
be inside our barn to see it! so when I told my stepdad about it he
said he caught a guy walking out of the barn last week and when he
questioned him he said well I saw the tips of those deer horns inside
the door and wanted to get a better look so he just walked in!! man the
    balls of some people!
so anyways while mom and my my wife made supper pat and I constructed
2 turkey feeders, and plotted out where we were gonna place them. we
have 2 flocks of turkeys there one about 32 birds and the other around
21 birds, they have been really scratchin the last week or so with all
    the snow on the ground.

Saturday morning I finished up my deer hunting on a sucessfull note,
they went right back to the grapevines about 9 am. I hadnt got but 3
hrs sleep friday night, spent newyears eve and the first 4 hrs of
newyears day on C&K's coal washing pond searching for the body of the
person who put their car through the ice, not enjoyable when the wind
chill was about -10 and the fear of possibly knowing the person who was
in the water, the divers finally arrived at 11:45pm and by the time we
had everything set up the first dive went off at 1:06 am, the car was
found directly below the hole in 30 feet of water, with signs of the
person being inside when it went down. the diver got the plate # and
when the info came back from the state police it was a stolen plate #
but we still had not recovered anything yet, they dove 3 more times but
came up empty, but with a 20 acre pond coverd with ice it was a futile
    search.
But anyways I loaded the deer into the truck and took it to camp and
hung it up & tagged it, I called my one nephew and and told him if he
needed some venison that he could have this deer, he has been
unemployed for awhile and I had found out that their freezer was almost
empty but I wanted to let him decide if he wanted it.
then we went rabbit hunting had about 25-30 rabbits up and got 4,
there are so many wistle pig holes around the farm they run right to
them, but then again thats why there are so many rabbits there cause
they have places to get away from predators. and that about wrapped up
    our eventfull new years weekend.

Well time has come to say good-bye. In today's DEC atomosphere, this
is strange, this time of departure is my choice.

March 4th will be my last day at DEC, I start a new job in Nashua NH
on March 14th, in a company called Datamedia, doing distributed server
    developement.

One of the biggest things I will miss is this notesfile. While I have
met very few of you, I have learned ALOT from you all, and feel I
owe alot of my success in the 93 hunting season to you, it was my
most successfull hunting season ever, including my first deer, and
a nice one at that (the rack looks great mounted on the wall!).

I will miss "talking" with you all, rest assured I will be in the
woods/fields/swamps come october 94. If you are ever in need of
some companionship for a hunt, I'd be glad to hunt with any of you.

If there is any future get togethers of this file, be it sporting clays
or anything else, please keep me in mind. I can be reached on the
    internet at: huston@datamedia.com.

Once again, thank you for the last few years, and lets all stay safe
out there and ensure our children the chance to enjoy this wonderfull
    sport of ours!

    Guys,

Anyone out there getting ready for a special muzzleloading season?
Ky has a 2 day early one starting on Saturday. I got my 50cal
flintlock out last night just to get psyched. I can't decide whether
to bowhunt or take it out, I'll probably take the flinter and stillhunt
    some.

I have one question that has bothered me since I got the rifle about 5
    years ago.

The guy who made the gun said that the Hoppes blackpowder solvent was
all I needed to clean it with. Most of the guys I know use boiling hot
water and so on... Of course I haven't had any problem so far, but I
still feel that I need something else.

    Opinions?

1325.21will make a sparkly clean bore35989::GEIBELLlost in PennsylvaniaWed Oct 12 1994 14:4229
    wess,

you will need a few things do properly clean a muzzleloader barrel,
          2 old towels
          1 bucket
          1 gallon boiling water

pour the water into the bucket, wrap the first towel around the
barrel (this one you will hold with your hand, take the other towel
fold it up and wrap it around (over) your hand on the barrel and around
the barrel, this is for protection from convected heat and splashing of
    water from the barrel.

stand the barrel in the bucket of water, muzzle end up, with a
cleaning patch on the ramrod push it all the way to the bottom, pull it
back up, a properly fitting ramrod and patch will create a vacume and
pull the boiling water into the barrel. continue doing this and keep
changing patchs until they are clean.

If you have only been using hopps, I think you will be suprised at
how dirty the water will become. the reason for the boiling water is
that as soon as the barrel is removed from the water the moisture
evaporates imediatly leaving the barrel dry and moisture free.

                        hope this helps

                                  and good luck this weekend

    Lee,

Thanks for the reply, that is what I have been hearing since I had
gotten it. I just thought that since the guy that made it told me that
all I needed was Hoppes, that was all I needed. I guess since pioneers
have been using boiling water since the beginning of time, I should
    have just followed their lead.

Kill a couple this weekend yourself.
