| I bet that meat was good.
They didn't mention whether it had a rack or not, so if they got it for
the meat, a decade makes for an old, tough deer.

Locally there where three or four fawns shot in the eye with pellet gun
by person or persons unknown. They where in a petting zoo. A reward
has been posted for information leading to the arrest and conviction of
the offenders.

1301.3 | big deer at Y.R.G.R.! | ODIXIE::RHARRIS | Bowhunters never hold back! | Fri Sep 24 1993 14:51 | 19 |
| Welcome Leonard.
Please call me @x57201. I am in need of a purchase for my wife! Also,
I shot some video at the Yellow River Game ranch. Have you been there
recently. There are numerous Boone and Crockett deer roaming around.
My wife was hand feeding a massive 14 pointer, known as General Lee,
and she turned and said,"How come deer hunting is so hard, why don't
you just feed them crackers?"
Right!
Bob
Going out tommorrow for the second bowhunt. Sighting rifles tommorrow
afternoon with the Earlman. Sunday, going to Monticello to plant
winter rye and drop off a ladder stand.

1301.4 | Elk poached - only the head taken | 29067::J_HENSON | and it's still too short! | Fri Jul 22 1994 13:35 | 30 |
| Sad to say, but I've got another entry for this topic. I saw what I
believe to be the work of a poacher. I recently moved to a small
town about 50 miles SW of Colorado Springs, and am currently making
the drive back and forth every day.
On yesterday's drive, I saw the remains of an elk that appeared to have
been hit by a truck. By the time I saw it, the head and neck was about
the only thing that was left. The rest was scattered all over the road.
But that appeared to be an accident. Things like this happen, and I
don't get overly concerned or upset when I see it (unless, of course,
I was the driver who hit it.). What I saw this morning, though, was
a different story. Not far from where I saw the elk remains yesterday
was a new carcass. This one, though, didn't appear to have been hit
by a car or truck. The body was totally intact, laying on the shoulder
of the road. The only thing that was missing was the head. I can only
guess that it was a bull, and that someone shot it just for those antlers
in velvet. What a rotten shame.
For you local folks, this was on highway 115, along Ft. Carson. It
was between Hitchrack Ranch and Turkey Creek Ranch. I did call the
wildlife department at Ft. Carson and report it. There wasn't anyone
to answer the phone at the time, so I just left voice mail. I don't
imagine that there's anything that they can do, but you never know.
Maybe the information that I gave them can fill in a blank somewhere
and help them get a more complete picture of the incident.
Bummer.

1301.5 | it was roadkill, not poached | 29067::J_HENSON | and it's still too short! | Fri Jul 22 1994 15:17 | 24 |

I just heard back from a game warden at Ft. Carson. The guy who called
me back had just checked it out. It was a cow! Plus it was
road kill, and hadn't been poached. I asked why someone would take
the head of a cow, and his only guess was that someone might be practicing
taxidermy and needed the head for practice. The warden's take on
this was that someone had hit it with a car or truck, and someone
else came along later and cut it's head off. Bizarre.
Anyway, it was nice to hear back on this, and the warden did thank
me for notifying them of the incident. Also, he was not aware of
the road kill from the previous day, and will probably check that
one out also.
Knowing that this was roadkill and not poached does make me feel a
bit better.
