893.0. "Mounted head" by JUPITR::OTENTI () Mon Jan 14 1991 10:14

    Hi,

I had a deer head mounted a couple years ago and recently
some hair began to fall out if someone touched the head.
Does anyone know of something a can put on the head to prevent
this from happening? Sure wouldn't want to have a bald head
up on the wall!...Currently it just hangs on the wall
untouched..should i be applying something to it to help
    preserve the thing?

    thanks for any suggestions
    Al

    	Al,

Sounds like a real problem. I don't think thare is much that can be
done but call one of your local Taxaderms. If nothinig can be done you
    could have the mount re-caped.

Steve, hope you can save your memories.

I don't know if this has been done before, but would hair-spray
keep the hairs stuck on? Some people have their hair standing out
    or up with that stuff.

You should get some hair loss, when I brush my mount (bi-monthly) I get
a few hairs but not many. It sounds like there is possible problem with
    the tanning of the cape.

that did lay down correctly, but I have not have any hair loss to speak
of (yet).

I had a simular problem with mine, and found out it was due to
small worms eating on it. Took it back to the taxidermist, and
he was real apoligetic and even offered to recape it. I may take
him up on that soon. Anyway he said apparently the moth proofing
chemical must have not took in certain areas. They retreated these
areas and allowed me to keep original cape. I noticed recently that
some of the stitching on the top of the neck is coming undone. Also
I've been having trouble gluing an antler that broke off the head
during a fall (dang cat!). Maybe its a good time to take him up
on the offer to recape it free, maybe pay a little extra to glue
    antler back on properly.

If it were my mount I would take it back to the person who did the
job the first time and see what they will do about it. I would say that
the response of small worms is probably what is happening with your
mount and if corrective action isnt taken soon you may possibly loose
    that mount.

Well,.. just got off the phone with the taxidermist that did the head
and he said bring it back in to let him take a look at it..said that
the hide was 'tanned' and should never have that happen..says if its
touched alot (mine isn't) he said there may be a problem because the
hair is hollow and the haid will 'break'..i told him small clumps fall
    out of mine....
anyways..i'll be bringing it in this weekend to let him have a look
hopefully he can do something but from these notes and what i've heard
off-line it doesn't look too good!

    thanks for all the replys..

    Al,

If the taxidermist can't help you there's one thing you can do.

Give me a call and we'll go deer-hunting next week. I know the
season is closed but, this is a priority, right?

Your mount's antlers are o.k, right? Well, we'll have to get you a new
cape. Doesn't matter if it's buck or doe....just need the cape...right?

Anyway, The state has their schedule and I have mine....Lot's of snow
    for tracking.........

Let us know what the taxi says.

See your Taxi-derm. There is a kit that is used to clean mounts.
The Taxi might do it for you for $ of course but might sell you the kit.

ref#.11! Steve where you been? I guess I'll have to get one (kit) too.
I'll check with my Taxidermist in Uxbridge as I wouldn't want that to
happen to my 8 pointer, tho I don't get it back until July. I'm still
around, ready for the A1 saturday, hopefully.

Gordy i'm learning as much from this topic as everybody else. I do have
seven deer heads and two bear heads mounted but i haven't had any
problems with them. Except for the last deer head that i got in Maine.
This one does have a light case of what the taxidermist called slipage.
This is hairs coming out. He asked me how long it had been hanging
before i brought it in to him. But it had been only three days since
i had shot it so he said this wasn't the problem. If it had been
hanging a long time the skin would start to rot which would cause the
slipage. Next he asked if the deer had gotten real wet before the
animal had a chance to cool. It poured shortly after i shot this deer,
so he said that the skin didn't get the chance to properly cool before
it got soaked. This is what caused the slipage and he said not to brush
it to much so i wouldn't be pulling out to many hairs. If it loses to
much hair the only thing that he could do would be to recape it with
    a different cape.
