785.0. "A new working Deer Scent" by AIMTEC::SOBCZYNSKI_L () Wed Oct 03 1990 11:18

Well with only seven days left before rifle season starts, I start
getting more and more consumed by the upcoming days. Having been
spoiled for the last two deer seasons, the thought has plagued me that
this season I'll have to work for a deer(s). Having explored many
different options, and not believing in the use of scents, and having
the enlightenment of previous notes here. It has made me wonder,
there is obviously something I have missed in addressing this issue.

The whole idea, roughly, when going out in the woods is being prepared
for all conditions, the right equipment etc.. Taking the percautions to
mask all odors, masking the human scent. The thought hit me this
morning, on what needs to be done. Let me set the scene now, from
personal experiences and from watching various videos and talking with
seasoned hunters. Deer it appears when on the move, assuming they are
not eluding some foe, will be eating, trying to mate etc.., well I am
not going to touch the later topics, but will the former.

Now all the scents currently out on the market, attempt to make one
smell like a skunk, doe, fox, earth, or urine pole. What about
smelling like a walking meal for a deer, thats right folks, and what
better way to achieve this than with an off the shelf item from the local
supermarket. It can be used as a scent, either on or off the body,
depending on the roughedness of the indvidual using this amazing
product. The nice part is that it is very easy on the pocket book and
is resuable and consumable. By now some of the more astute noters have
probably guessed what this amazing well known product is????? Its.....

    Hey Leonard,

How about dragging a 50 lb. bag of apples behind you, and then eat them
all at your stand, throwing the apple cores right under your stand?
Actually, what your idea is, is a good one. The smell of food sounds
good to me, but then it is breakfast time. What flavor of jelly would
you use with the peanut butter? But really, I guess it depends on what
kind of food is in the area for the deer. I am sure that peanut butter
would probably scare the deer like the smell of human. I never see
peanut butter in the woods. I may be wrong though. Whatever works,
and is successful, use it. One week for you eh? 17 days for me. I'm
    already having fits.

    good luck,
    BB (bob)

I've seen peanut butter scent wafers before. I think the idea is
that they do smell it as a food source but are not scared of it.
I've never tried it so I can't say if it would work or not.

Never tried peanut butter for deer, but it works great for squirrels.
Just put a gob on a stump or log, sit back and in a few minutes there
will be squirrels fighting over the peanut butter. Works best in the
early morning or late evening when the squirrels are most active. So,
I would say give it a try, if you are run over by squirrels but not
deer, then change the hunt to a squirrel hunt, at least then you will
have something to take home. ;<).

I used to have an uncle who hunted for two weeks in Maine each year.
I was young at the time but remember that he would religiously air
out his cloths by hanging then on the breeze way for three weeks
straight and then pack then in a burlap (sp) bag that he had used
to store apples. When he went to maine the cloths were folded and
the bag placed on top of them in a duffle bag he used only for hunting.

785.6blender with acornsSALEM::MACGREGORWed Oct 03 1990 13:425
Someone recently told me about a scent that they make that seems to
work well. They take a bunch of acorns and put them in a blender and
the stuff turns to a kind of mush. The smell seems to be like a
concentration of acorns. Sounds easy enough.

Re .1 try the green apples, but forget about the effect they have
after a few hours. re- Jelly, actually use bananas, rarely see
       any over weight deer.

Re .2 this is what I'm thinking, that's one reason for using the crunchy
variety. The idea comes from the fact that they like the acorns and
that it is a member of the nut family.

Re .4 thinking about it now, guess I won't use the peanut butter like a
like camouflage dressing, I'll put it out in a clearing. The original
idea was to just keep it along side me, which would also provide
me something to munch on if I got hungry. Wearing it was a thought
in passing also, seems the closer the deer can be drawn in the
better my chances for bagging one. Hmmm, squirrel hunting with a
.444 would be interesting. Just remember Carl, not all the squirrels
       live in the woods.

Re. .3.5.6 In all seriousness, y'all have given me an idea which I will
try, that is use the blender to make a mixture of scent. thank you,
I can just see my wife's expression when nuts, molasses and other
ingredients are drop in the blender.

Well mixed up a small batch of crunchy peanut butter and molasses. It
was somewhat of a chore getting it out of the blender, think next time
I'll use the paint mixer and drill motor. Well at any rate, I was
going to put it out in the back yard since deer do frequent the area.
Deciding that it was too late in the evening I decided to store it in
the fridge, well guess what. The kids got up early the next morning
and they absolutely loved it, and want me to mix up another batch. The
only thing they complained about later in the day was an irregularity
of sorts, that'll teach em top mess with the scent. The only thing I'm
glad I didn't do was go out in the front yard and get the acorns like I
had inteded on doing, but again it was just to late for that. If it
attracts 'kids' maybe it will attract deer, it sure did make dear
    happy.

    Leonard,

Was it hard to clean the blender? Did your kids start leaving their
scent around the house after ingesting your concoction? Oh, by the
way, since I spoke with you last night, hearing about your scheduled
deer hunting trip, I expect to see some notes from you in the 90-91
hunting notes when you get back.

Best be careful with the peanut butter "scent" The game wardens will
be checking deer this year to see if there's peanut butter stuck to the
roof of the deer's mouth when you bring it in to the registration
station. Then they'll fine you for baiting.

re 13, Well Randy, it wasn't easy, the dogs loved the blender
container, until the tounge got hung on the blade, should have
           removed it first I guess.

re 14. BAITING! me never, "Well warden I was using the stuff for marking
my trial. Darn deer musta off been trying to get me lost in the
woods eating my markers, couldn't have let that happen?" If the
warden is slower than me it might work.

re 15. you'll hunt(or was it among) with your acorns?? Elaborate Please.

Bob, has this been tried successfully in your neck of the woods?

785.19Acorn ScentSALEM::BOHANEKMon Oct 08 1990 10:5110
Seriously, if your kids are anything like mine they should love
collecting bags of acorns for dad. Once you get the acorns what i do
is put them in a tough plastic bag and drive over it slowly a couple of
times, pick out the acorn nuts and drop them in the blender and mix it
up with a lot of water so you have a real thin watery type mixture.
Then pour it in a gallon container and wallah, you have a years worth of
acorn scent. It took me no more than a half an hour to do all of the
    above.

re 19. this also is a serious question.

How long have you let it set? I would imagine that there must be
    ageing time?

Many of the scents are sprayed, or poured on. I would guess that the
best application of this would be to soak the hunting clothes in it and
    then air dry?

There are some other options available in using, do you have any
    preference?

Leonard, I find that the smell does get stronger the longer it sits
as well as the more concentrated it is. I usally make it in the spring
after letting the acorns dry out and use it in the fall. I can't say if it
really works but I feel comfortable using it. I have a spray bottle
that I use once I get within 10 to 15 minutes of my stand. Although
your idea of spraying your clothes and letting them sit doesn't
    sound bad.

BTW.. I do see deer every year and get at least one opportunity, although
my success rate is not as good as that. That's why I feel comfortable
    using it.

785.23A different approach!!SA1794::BARTHELETTEJMon Oct 08 1990 21:5215
I have a different approach to a scent that works !!! Borrow your
hunting partners hat and hang it from a nearby tree!! You know the
friend that's been shootin at deer for years and usually runs out
of arrows ( or bullets ). This scent the deer from the area are
familiar with and DON'T feel the least bit threatened, thus allowing
you, the crack shot to capitolize on their relaxed, laughing mood!

Seriously, I used to use masking scents, but stopped using them
a couple of years ago, and I still see plenty of deer, and don't
have to put up with some of those funky smells while attempting
to stay warm in my tree stand. I suppose if they give you added
confidence, then go for it, otherwise save your money, and blender
    for other things. Good Hunting!

785.24talk about a deer blind!LUDWIG::BINGYes, I too am the NRA/GOALTue Nov 13 1990 15:1950

Fred Trost of "Michigan Outdoors" was experimenting with scents
again this weekend. He used a bottle of XXX, a bottle of human urine
and a bottle of Aqua velva after shave. The photog then hid in a
ground blind with a stone wall to his back and a bunch of christmas
trees in a semi circle in front of him. The wind was blowing to his
left and three bucks came in. They went directly to XXX then to
the human urine. The photog heard something to his left and slowly
turned, there was a big buck standing in the entrance to his blind.
The deer walked in and started hitting the camera with his antlers.
The photog ended up kicking the deer in the butt to get it out of
the blind. The photog said the deer was grunting the whole time
and had an erection. The photog then put another tree in the door
of his blind only to have the deer jump over the tree into the blind.

The camera stopped at this point cause the guy had to fend off the
deer with the cameras tripod, he started yelling for help and FT
came running, he saw what was happening picked up the camera and
caught it all on film. The deer was grunting and pawing the ground
a little, then it showed FT walk to with 10 yards of the deer to
scare him off so he could retreive the bottle of XXX. The deer would
not leave until FT started to stamp his feet and walk towards the
deer, the deer then only ran off about 10 yards.

All this happened in a reserve that was not hunted so the deer would
not have been especially scared of people but it turns out that
this buck was raised by humans and bottle fed, that's why he was'nt
scared. However the other three bucks were scared but did come to
the scent of XXX. What is XXX you ask? Well send me $20 in unmarked
    bills....oh never mind, it was......

Ammonia. Urine when it decomposes turns to ammonia, this attracted
the deer then they went to the fresh human urine. I plan to try
it this weekend to see if it works. FT said it only attratced bucks
and was $.82 a bottle compared to $10+ for other attractents.

The show is Michigan Outdoors, every sunday morning at 10:00 on
channel 11 out of NH. They have a magazine you can send for, which

Saw the same show(I *try* to get the T.V. on Sun. Morning).

I really like his show, and his demeanor. I may also try
that Ammonia trick this week-end. Why? This past weekend I was
talking to a guy who said."Yup! this guy I work with was driving down
your street about 4:30 Sunday and hit a BIG buck". "He broke his
headlight, and saw some blood on the back of its' hind leg, but the

    yard!"

I would like to see if I could at least see this buck, as I
