Hi, we are trying to sell 3 DECconcentrator 900MX to the University of Barcelona to connect 3 CISCO routers in three different sites of the city. The reason why we they want to use them is because CISCO doesn't assure that they can connect trough a SMF with 14dB of Power Loss (CISCO says that FDDI can only support 12 dB of Power Loss). We told the customer that Digital can support till 22dB of Power Loss. I need answer to this questions: 1.- General questions: 1.1.- What is maximum power loss for the SMF PMD of the DECconcentrator 900MX?. 1.2.- Were we right telling to the customer that Digital can support till 22dB of Power Loss?. 2.- Configuration questions: We proposed this configuration: To port B of DAS of CISCO router | | +-|--------------------------+ | A M M M M B | |MMF SMF SMF | +------|---------|-----------+ | | +-----------------------+ | | 14 dB of Power Loss | | | +--------------------------|-+ | | A M M M M B | | | MMF SMF| +-----------------------------+ +----------------|-----------+ 14 dB of Power Loss | | | | | To port B of DAS of CISCO router +--------------------------|-+ | A M M M M B | | MMF SMF| +----------------|-----------+ | | To port B of DAS of CISCO router 2.1.- Is this configuration correct? 2.2.- Is possible to change port A of the concentrator (1) to port M without Hubwatch Software? 3.- DECconcentrator 900MX questions: In note 1028 of HUB_MGNT conference there is an explanation of what Part-Numbers we have to order for DECconcentrators 900MX with SMF modPMD's. In our proposal we put the Part-Numbers separately. 3.1.- Is possible to order DEF6X-MA, DEFXM-AA and DEFXS-AA separately and install all together on site? 3.2.- Is there any problem to install 2 SMF modPMD's in one concentrator? 3.3.- Who's got the expertise to install them? 4.- The customer also wants references of similar installations around the world. 4.1.- Does anybody have any references?. Any help would be apreciated, thanks in advance LLUIS SOPENA @ZQO DECsite Barcelona (Spain)

1380.1 | 22 dB loss is correct. | 4371::KIRK | tis a gift to be simple | Fri Jun 17 1994 20:29 | 24 |
Hello, I can supply answers to a couple of your questions. The maximum power loss for the SMF PMD of the DECconcentrator 900MX is 22 dB. It also requires a minimum loss of 12 dB. Your customers cable plant has 14 dB loss, so everything should be fine. The ANSI SMF PMD is different from our product in the amount of power loss allowed. CISCO seems to be quoting the ANSI PMD figures. Your questions regarding the topology configuration are better answered by others. Paul Koning would be a good source. (KONING::KONING) The questions regarding the configuration of the DECconcentrator 900MX should be answered by the product manager or product engineer. Try Karl Pieper (DELNI::PIEPER) or John Iannarone (LEVERS::IANNARONE) Good luck with the sale. Richard L. Kirk Optical PMD Engineering
1380.2 | There are two types of SMF-PMD | KONING::KONING | Paul Koning, B-16504 | Tue Jun 21 1994 16:29 | 6 |
Cisco may be thinking about Type 1 SMF-PMD, which indeed requires lower loss. Or they may just be confused -- that would hardly be the first time for them! Our SMF-PMD is type 2, and your configuration is fine. paul
