Hello, I have a customer who will be replacing some of their multi-mode fiber links with single-mode fiber links to eliminate concentrators installed as repeaters because of distance limitations. The shortest SM fiber link will be approximately 3300 meters. I understand that there is some sort of minimum loss required on single-mode because of the transmit power on the lasers? If true, what is the minimum loss required and can someone point me to a document which covers all of the various fiber requirements (i.e., Modal Bandwidth, power budgets, etc...)? Thanks, Laurie Richards

I found the answer to my first question about minimum loss requirements on single-mode links in note 494.4, but I'm still very interested in a good document or book on fiber. Something that would explain terms such as modal and chromatic dispersion and provide bandwidth, and loss requirements for FDDI. Your suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Laurie

Sometime soon, Addison-Wesley should be publishing a book by Raj Jain that will answer this question and many more... paul

All the fiber parameters are documented in the Configuration Guidelines, EK-DFDDI-CG. Softcopy is available at the following directory: TNPUBS::USER$657:[PUBLIC.HRD.STOW] |
