349.0. "IBM supports FDDI" by DEKVC::YOUNGSOOPARK () Tue Sep 24 1991 02:26

Need an update on connecting FDDI to IBM systems (3745).

A few customers in Singapore, Korea has indicated that IBM supports
an FDDI interface on their 3745 cluster controller.

IBM in both countries have not provided customer with details on this
    controller.

    Need to know the following:

    1 - SAS or DAS
    2 - Translation or encapsultation
    3 - protocols supported, TCP/IP, SDLC, etc.
4 - FDDI Chip set, AMD, National Semi, Motorola

Hope some one has the info.

Why do people expect Digital to provide information about IBM products
that IBM is unwilling or incapable of providing?

Perhaps there is no information because the product doesn't exist yet?

349.2No FDDI gear from IBM yet...CGHUB::LEONARDFri Sep 27 1991 12:289
If such a product exists, it has not been announced in the U.S. We in
FDDI marketing watch the trade rags constantly for such announcements
and have seen nothing. IBM may be market testing it outside the U.S.
and I would not be at all surprised to see them announce it at the
Interop 91 show in San Jose, California in two weeks. IBM is
participating the multivendor (more than 40 vendors) FDDI demo at that
show, but I don't know what they'll be showing. So stay tuned.

Here is an extract from the regular data supplied by IBM to their
installed base. This was compiled by one of the engineers taking care
of the Valbonne ES/9000. Not much info I'm afraid.

    Hope this helps. Patrick

T 02/19/91 WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THE "ENHANCEMENT FEATURE"
T OF THE 3172 INTERCONNECT PROGRAM IN REGARDS TO
 T FDDI?

 SOURCE MATERIAL DATED: FEB91

 QUESTION:
I have a customer that would like to buy a 3172 with FDDI and was
wondering if you could position the Interconnect controller
programs for me. Specifically I was wondering about the 3172
Interconnect Enhancement Feature which would seem to add some
SNA support to the Interconnect program (at least that's what I got
out of the salesmanual and announcement letters for 5601-433).
If the customer is just backing up files to the host will they need
 the Enhancement feature?

 RESPONSE:
For FDDI support, you need the 3172 Model 2 and the Interconnect
Controller Program V2.1. Probably you already know this. You will need
the Enhancement Feature if connectivity to VTAM is desired from the LAN
(be it Token-Ring, FDDI or whatever). On the other hand, if you don't
want VTAM connectivity, you want TCP/IP on the host, then this Feature
is not necessary. You didn't specify what environment the backing up of
 file is done in.

T 05/15/91 QUESTION ON 3174 SUPPORT THROUGH TRN BRIDGED TO
 T FDDI NETWORK

 SOURCE MATERIAL DATED: MAY91

 QUESTION:
Have looked at announcements and LAN Concepts Redbook, GG24-3178,
but cannot find verification on following configuration:
User would like to know if IBM will support the following at some
 point in the future:
    ACF/VTAM host -> 3172-002 w/FDDI -> bridge product from IBM (SOD)
or other vendor -> TRN network -> 3174-13R

ACF/VTAM and 3172-002 are announced. Bridge to TRN is SOD.

Question is will VTAM support 3174 traffic through FDDI
 from a bridged TRN?

 RESPONSE:
The existence of the bridge and TRN should be transparent (or not
known by) to the 3172 in this case.

We have to assume the 3174 TRN adapter will be able to communicate
 with the 3172 adapter.

Given that, the connection is supported. See recent Equal/Askq item
IVHR8 for additional information on connecting VTAM-3172 to
a 3174 via Token Ring; the cases are very similar.
