Is Randy still 'doing' hair at his New Horizons shop???? My job is
moving down to Littleton and I would love nothing better than to go
back to him since I will be in the area! I miss him and that special
atmosphere - it was always so much FUN having my hair done there!!!

2 or 3 days a week (Thurs, Fri, Sat maybe?) ..... its been a couple
years since I made the trek down there. So is he still doing those
same days and doing real estate the rest of the time?

New Horizons will be having a Cut-a-thon on

		Sunday, April 13 1-4

to raise money to pay for surgery for a
dog that was shot by a Marlboro policeman.

[the dog had the surgery, the cost was $3500]

    RE: the last

The dog owner has investigated with a lawyer about suing the
city of Marlboro for vet bills. I would suggest that this
money be better spent on the homeless shelters/food banks.

This has been front page news since it happened. It was a
rotweiller that broke loose from his chain on Easter Sunday.

122.42MOVIES::POTTERhttp://www.vmse.edo.dec.com/~potter/Fri Apr 04 1997 22:536
I wonder whether the people who are organising the fund raising
would have cared had it been the Police officer injured by the
dog...?

The dog had gotten loose when the owner was not at home. The dog
was running around the neighborhood - disrupting a childrens easter
egg hunt, and also charged a woman and child. Someone called the
	police.

When the police arrived they found a dog "foaming at the mouth" -they
were not sure if it was rabies, or sweat, the dog charged officers,
the dog RAMMED a police crusier, and was generally out of control.

When they were attempting to catch it with the dog lasso it again
charged an officier. The officer that the dog charged shot it IN
THE LEG (so as to not kill the dog.)

Remember this is a 110 pound dog. Big Dog. yes, it also is a
rottweiler. Doesn't matter what kind of dog. He was out of
	control.

Wow - I thought that Britain was the only country where people would work so
hard to try to keep someone else's pet alive. Bravo to that officer.

    Where is this hairdresser located?

Bravo to the police officer for NOT killing the dog. Perhaps the
owner should invest in a better way of keeping his dog from getting
    loose again?

    Thanks,

Perhaps the owner should re-think the whole idea of owning a dog.

If he must keep a dog chained up outside all day, then he'd
be better off with a hamster.

    RE: Note 122.47: Exactly!

I tend to hold the owner responsible, but in this case,
perhaps the owner miscalculated the strength of his dog.

Large dogs (especially) really need a lot of space and
freedom to run, IMO. I don't think they take too well to
    being restricted/restrained.

122.50No one's faultDEMON::INGALLSThu Apr 10 1997 12:289
In a case like this, where there was an attempt by the owner to
restrain the dog, I really can't see that anyone is "at fault".

Accidents happen, things go wrong, etc... this is how we learn,
sometimes, what works and what doesn't.

I'm glad the dog is going to make it, and that no one was hurt.

Gail,
I have to disagree. "Attempting" to restrain a dog is not enough,
you must REALLY restrain the dog. Failure to do so is negligence.

Jim

122.52CSC32::M_EVANSbe the villageThu Apr 10 1997 15:1519
Failure to restrain and train a dog can result in injuries to both the
dog and people around them. A big dog can injure children and smaller
people just by being friendly. I have a large Samoyed bitch that I
have to watch and hold carefully as mom comes into the house. Sonja
absolutely loves everyone, but 67+ pounds of love bouncing toward a
not-to steady older woman is not a good thing and "down" is not always
a nonmaskable interrupt yet in the mutt's mind. Work continues on
that. She is more careful with short people (AKA children) but that is
because she knows they scream and cry if she comes on too strong, and
she wants to be played with. She spent two days convincing my best
friend's daughter that she was the greates stuffed animal the baby had
ever seen in order to calm Shiloh after she had been bitten by a large
white dog. All sonja wanted was for shiloh to toss balls for her,
    but...

Police are notoriously touchy about large dogs, friendly or not.
Another good reason to have a dog restrained and under control.

Looks like we are ratholing the hairdresser update.
122.53DEMON::INGALLSThu Apr 10 1997 20:439
    You're right, Jim.

I'm just imagining that this guy probably loves his dog and honestly
thought the restraint was enough. Guilty of not restraining the dog,
    but not maliciously so.

    Legally, none of this matters.

I'm a bit of a crank on the subject. Anyone that ties a dog
up outside for extended periods of time, doesn't qualify as
someone who loves his dog in my book.

122.55Is it possible to own a dog and not live on a farm?SMURF::usr606.zko.dec.com::pbeckPaul Beck, wasted::pbeckFri Apr 11 1997 03:3116
The alternative being ...?

(1) never let the dog outside unless you've got it on a leash
(doesn't seem any better, since the dog won't get much exercise)

(2) get a large safely fenced yard for the dog to roam in
	(not everybody has one)

(3) let the dog run free and to *** with the neighbors
(love your dog, hate your neighbors?)

(4) stuff the dog and display it over the mantle
	(the Trigger syndrome)

(5) get a cat
	(best idea yet)

Jim, I guess I'm just a "soft touch" when it comes to

          there.

Gail,
As am I. In addition to 4 dogs and 3 cats, my wife and I operate
(well, Kat runs the group. I'm primarily grunt labor) a non-profit
(and just this week, state licensed) dog rescue group.

We see the results of irresponsible ownership every day.

Paul,
Option #2 is the best. True not everyone has a fence, both those
who do not need to to look to #1. If they are not willing to excersize
the dog, then go to #5 (or better yet, maybe they should keep
	fish).

RE: 122.57 Wow! Sounds like you have things under control tho.

Which is why I can't work with the MSPCA or Angel Memorial.

As I was driving (20 mph) down a street one day, a dog ran out
in front of me. I barely touched him, he rolled over, jumped
    	up and ran off.

I knocked on the door of the nearby house to inform the owner
that her dog might be injured and could I do anything? She just
said, "Oh that's ok, he's always getting hit by cars".

I can not tell you what I would liked to have done to that woman.
In retrospect, I wish I had reported her or better yet, taken her
dog and found a responsible owner for it.

(I also pictured her FACE with my tiremarks on it.) 8-)

Sorry, but animal abuse is one thing I simply can not accept or
tolerate. Can't even watch animal abuse stories on TV; too
    	painful.

    Have a great weekend everyone!

    Gail
