20:15
Stadium to have 64,000 (down on normal due to security restrictions)
Also have a video screen in the Olympic Halle (about 100 metres from
stadium) and for 10DM (about 4 quid) 8,800 can see the game (and probably
hear the 'live' crowd). Might try that myself !
Some facts from the paper about the teams (amounts in Deutschmarks):

Good grief those salaries are incredible......
I think the kick-off is set for 8.30 tonight.
Last weeks Paris Match had pictures of Tapi with the OM team players
out on his yacht presumbly to give them a pep talk and show them
where they'd have to walk the plank if they lost!

It strikes me that Boksic has been robbed ! Obviously, Marseille rate
him very highly ( 30m is quite a lot of money to pay for a player ),
but he isn't on that good a salary comparatively.

Don't forget Boksic got a cut of the transfer fee!
Marseille are on DM 300,000 a man to win tonight, Milan on over
DM 500,000 (Information care of the overrated and over-payed author of
.1 ;-) ). I hope that doesn't ruin the game as a spectacle! I don't
think it will.
Here's hoping for a cracker between the best team in Europe and the
best team outside of Italy.

a good strategy seems to be to bring on Gullit in the middle of the

He left Marseille to win an European cup with Milan and now the odd thing for
Papin would be that Marseille win the title.

Marseille is European champion.....
Score: 1 - 0 Basile BOLI (44')
Great 1st half with loads of action an a couple occasions for both
Marseille and Milan. A minute before half-time, on a corner kick
Basile jumps in the middle of 3 player to head home...
Second half was less active with Marseille playing less attacking
football, trying to contain Milan which was not too inspired...

| just back from watching the tape delayed feed here and i must say the
first 20 or so minutes was great stuff - could have been 2-2 by then
After that it slowed down a bit but Marseille snuck a goal on the
stroke of halftime from a corner, not much between thw two sides.
the second half was dire - and i'd only had two pints of Bass, but if
these were the two best teams in Europe we're in trouble guys!
papin came on too late, guillt wasn't even in the squad, where were
the supposed no 1 team in europe A.C.Milan??

| What an irony, OM two years ago had a great attacking team with
Pele, Papin and Waddle, and yet they lost!
This time they learnt their lesson and played the tightest defense,
especialy in the second half your ever likely to see.
Pele had some great touches, Voller looked well past his
'sell-by-date'.
Boli scored, and he deserved it.....
Well done OM,

| Well done Marseille. Good to see the Italians can't buy everything !!
We went up to the stadium just before kickoff, tickets going for
300-400 DM (normal price 130 DM) and it looked like some of the touts
were getting stung (2 mins to go and still tickets left). We went to
the 'halle' for 10DM and watched the video from a chair with no queues
for the beer. Although they had catered for 8,800 only about 200-300
came in (i think they didn't advertise it). Straight after the game
there were a lot of pissed-off Italians streaming out of the
stadium.........
So how would Rangers have done against a side with no ideas, although
Lentini did try a bit ?

I watched Milan last night and they are not a good side, definately not
in the class of Liverpool when they won their European cups in 1977, 78, 81 &
84. They looked over the top and very ordinary and it was great to see them
get beaten by Marseilles.

For heaven sake! Do you get paid a commission every time you

After 38 years a French side has won a European cup, and
apparantly most French towns, including ones many many miles
from Marseille were getting very merry.

| Basile Boli played one hell of a game. Wouldn't be surprised to see him
in the Milan line-up next year," If you can't beat them Buy them!".
Papin moved to Milan to win the cup and got beaten by the side he
came from ! He obviously didn't leave too many friends behind judging
from the Barthez incident. Although shaky at first the OM defense had a
really good game, Di Meco, Angloma and Boli all played out of their
skins. As for Milan, Baresi was solid as ever but Van Basten looked
like he had not played for a while, Massaro and Lentini got good space
but never did anything with it. To think that Lentini cost as much as
Boli, Di Meco, sauzee, pele, Angloma and Deschamps put together is
ridiculous.

| Great first half with exiting and good football. Unfortunately OM
scored in the end their goal. That meaned a boring second half with the
dominating team ( Milan) without ideas and with an opponent who
actually stopped playing. Shame, shame over them ! Football lasts for
90 minutes ! But result is still the most important in nowadays
games....

| I agree entirely with .12 - the Marseille team that lost to Belgrade
was excellent - but the team that lost to Benfica in the semi the
year before (thanks to "The Hand of God Part II") was equally good.
However Marseille deserved the title for sheer persistence - they've
proved their European pedigree over the past few seasons - it's good
to see it rewarded.
So congratulations to France and Marseille. Allez Monaco (shurely
shome mistake ??)

Don't know about Antibes, but there was dancing in the streets of
Cagnes/Mer, plus fireworks and a lot of car horns being thumped. For
those not of Valbonne, Cagnes is a mere 212km from Marseille. Anyway,
nice to see the smirk wiped from Papin's face.
According to todays Nice Matin, Voeller is off to Japan, probably to
be replaced by the Swiss forward Chapuisat.

I agree with previous notes. The first half was very good and Milan
should have gone in at half-time in the lead. But it was very strange
to see them so short of ideas in the second half that they resorted to
long balls upfield. Milan are not a bad team because of one match, and
indeed it is good to see that they are not unbeatable.
The final actually had similarities to the 1967 final when Celtic
became the first Scottish club to win the EC, against the other Milan
team.
I don't think Rangers will be far away next season again.

Well all I can say is that Rangers would have humped either of them.
With such silky defenders as John Brown & Dave McPherson, neither teams
strikers would have got a sniff at goal.
Wee Durranty would have ran riot in the middle. He's surely worth more
than Lentini. And as for Van Basten/Voller/Papin/Boli, the couldn't
lace Super Ally's boots !!

presently writing this with my toes as I am handcuffed to large

all in all it was a reasonable match..good to see those star performers

game. Ive noticed that since playing in Italy, David Platts diving
ability has come on leaps and bounds.....

298.26 | More Marseille | BSPARK::WARD | | Mon May 31 1993 14:33 | 11 |
| Continuing the Marseille euphoria rathole alert .. I accidentally
discovered a video of the previously mentioned Marseille side of
a few seasons ago. The game was against Rumania which OM won 2-1.
The team included Tigana, Francescolli, Waddle, Papin, Germain and
Moser - none of whom play for Marseille any more.
It appeared this was a friendly match to celebrate Rumania's freedom -
which would make it about February 1990. Can anyone confirm/supply
more details ??

298.27 | Took his time speaking out though, didn't he?! | VARESE::SACHA::IDC_BSTR | Oh no! NOT Milan Kundera again! | Tue Aug 08 1995 16:37 | 18 |
| Now, while the Fashanu/Segars/Grobelaar affair is brewing, how about a
bit more scandal to brighten up your lives? I thought 298 was the most
appropriate note for this little item which is threatening to throw a
dark cloud over the reputations of two of Europe's premier clubs (both
of whom have had their fair share of dark moments in the past).
Jean-Marie Papin, ex-Milan and Marseille centre-forward yesterday
stated that TWO Milan players took bribes prior to the 1993 Champions'
Cup Final (which finished 1-0 to Marseille) between the two clubs. The
Italian press is already demanding an inquest (well, it's one good way of
explaining why Milan lost!) and Papin has rather soured relations with his
ex-pals. Spicey enough for you?
To coin a phrase of Stuart's, "spending money is no surefire way to
spend money".

298.28 | Milan mafia again ? | VNACO1::HERIBERT | | Wed Aug 09 1995 11:40 | 12 |
| J.P.Papin has denied the news of the Italian press.
He never has spoken , Marseille has corupted in the EC final. This has
been a fiction of the Italian, e.g. the "Milan"-press.
Papin: " I'll never speak with any Italian journalist in the future."
We in Austria have become acquainted with the methods of AC Milan, theirs
press and functionaries - I can easy believe that this is a fiction of press
and Papin is more worthy of credit.
