211.0. "Capped too often/few ??" by MIACT::RANKINE () Tue May 12 1992 17:03

Many times I have looked at international team selections and wondered
how particular players have been included, and how they have kept
certain players out. The topic of this note is which players in your
opinion have been awarded too many international caps, and which
players have been awarded too few, if any.

    Re previous few..

Surely Dalglish got as many as he could get..I dont recall him being
dropped or missing too many..pity he couldnt play for his country as
well as he did his clubs....so perhaps he had too many ??? :-). I
should state that I was a great fan of Kenny as a player.

I recall a England v W. Germany game held in South America when England
won 3-0, and it was the best performance, IMHO, that I had seen from
England. I put this down to their midfield..Robbo, Peter reid and
glenn hoddle....Robbo and Reid running around marking and winning the ball
and Hoddle just oozing class. To me it was a combination made in heaven
which was broken when Wilkins was picked again....nothing against Ray,
I never felt that he was right.

    Nigel,

Reidy was virtually a permanent fixture for England once Robson (Bobby)
realised how good he was - I think he won about 20 odd caps in the end,
not bad considering he didn't make his debut until his late 20s. Robson
(Bryan) played his best games for England when Reid was doing all the
    hard work next to him.

I was gutted for Bracewell on Saturday - 4 cup finals and 4 defeats. He
played well in the first half, but faded totally in the second.

I'll probably get stick for this but....

Too many ? How about Bryan Robson ?

A very gifted player but can never stay fit. England managers pick him all the
time on the off-chance he can play, then pick the rest of the team to fit around
him. If I were an England manager I'd go for someone more reliable.

Brian McClair has played about 20 games for Scotland and has scored
0 goals.A striker is credited with the goals he scores so Brian has had

    re last

Brian McClair has hardly ever played as a striker for Scotland. He has
more often than not played in midfield, and most times came on as a sub
when Scotland were chasing the game.

Using your argument, Kenny Dalglish played almost all his games as a
striker. His goal average was less than a goal every 3 games. Mo
Johnston and Ally McCoist have hardly got an impressive strike rate
either, so therefore all 3 have had more than enough credit and caps!!

I seem to remember (albeit fuzzily) that the reason he didn't get many

Duncan McKenzie played for Leds from 1975-78 or so, he was a real crowd
pleaser, someone that has been missing from Elland Road until M.Cantona
arrived this year. One of his other tricks was to throw a golf ball the
length of the pitch. He should have had more recognition. After Leeds
he went to Anderlecht then ????

    Brian,

What was the story about George Wood ? - is it printable in here ?

MacKenzie was at Everton between 1976 and 1978 - he was worshipped at
Goodison until Gordon Lee (the man who sold Malcolm McDonald at
Newcastle) sold him because 'there's no place in my team for
    stars'.....

He didn't have an attitude problem, he was just too much of an
individual for most second rate managers to cope with. My best memory
of him was in the 1977 cup semi-final against Liverpool, Tommy Smith
had spent most of the game trying to cripple him and in one moment of
sheer class, he got the ball in the semi circle, Smith started to go
for him so MacKenzie knocked the ball behind his back then flicked it
over his and Tommy Smith's head and ran round him and collected it
again - leaving Smith for dead.

    Capped too often for Sweden:

Stefan Pettersson and Mats Gren, both of whom picked up injuries last
week to eliminate them from Euro-92. Maybe there is a God after all.

Straight out of the Michael Phelan book of can't pass, can't tackle and

If anyone has seen the compilation of Gary Lineker goals on TV in the
last couple of days, notice how many of his early goals involved a
    certain Glenn Hoddle.

I think it is apparent, even if we didn't know already, that his
international career should have been a lot longer.

Re .51. I thought Brian Clough was not capped more often simply because
of his career being cut short by injury.....

    Too many....Brian Robson,John Barnes,Chris Waddle,Ray Clemence,Tony
    Adams,Dennis Wise,Carlton Palmer,Lee Dixon,Sammy Lee,Gary Stevens,
Tony Daly,Ray Wilkins,Geoff Thomas & many more but I haven't got time to
think of them at the moment.

    Too few....As said before - Glenn Hoddle,Paul Parker,Nigel Clough,Lee
Sharpe, & again not enough time to sit down & think about all the other
talented but forgotten players for the international stage.
