141.0. "Trading Cards for Soccer" by ASDG::JOHNSON () Fri Dec 20 1991 22:37

My son recently got into trading cards here in the U.S. big time (read
$$$$$ into that) and it got me to wondering if such things exist in
Europe. The catalogs he has picked up here only describe baseball, hockey,
football (American style), and basketball. Some of these cards are
literally worth $1,500 or more depending upon age and condition. Anyways,
do these things exist in Europe for football (real football - soccer to
us here in the States)? I would be interested in purchasing some if they
do exist regardless of origin (England-Scotland-Germany-Belgium-etc.).

I have 3/4 FULL albums, of World Cup '66, '70, and '78, as well as some
late 60's English League Albums, with some of todays present managers
    etc..

Brian Clough, Terry Venables, George Graham etc... and Saint &
    Greavsie.

But non for sale. It was 'me dad' who collected them!!!

I was too young then(the 60's that is) was but a mere twinke in an

i collected them, late 70's early 80's but never filled a book.
    (league cards and world cup)
they got thrown away when we moved. shame, might have been worth summat
    in about 50 years!
Panini still make em, and a new set should be out soon, though
the price has rocketed since i used to collect them.

The main difference I found between collecting now and
collecting as a kid is that I have nobody to swap with.

As a kid you were constantly swapping/trading with your
mates and if your mate wouldn't come to an agreement on
a player that you were desperate for one could always
resort to violence. (-8. However you all reached a point
where you were all after the same players but Panini had
    not released them.

When I was collecting the Italia '90 stuff I ended up with
about 250 spare players as I used to buy packets at a time.
Of course you couldn't do this as a kid. I couldn't order the
rest from Panini unless I needed 50 or less and I spent weeks
    waiting for about 5 players.

Still, they do make nice collections when they are complete and
they are after all small pieces of history. I do it for my own
interest and to pass on to my son when he is older.

My biggest memory was collecting the Esso world cup coins in 66.
Although they were for English players, us Scots kids still collected
them...my old man used to go up the wall as I constantly badgered him
to go to Esso stations for petrol so I could get a new coin. As I
recall I had Norman Hunter overload, Bopbby Charlton and Bobby Moore
were fairly common, but I cant remember who were the difficult ones to
get hold of..I never did get the full set, and Germany were robbed..the
ball didnt crosss the line..5 million of us north of Hadrians Wall are
    convinced of that.

They tried to issue World Cup coins for Italia 90, but it didnt seem
the same somehow..especially as a nagging wife keeps telling me to grow
up, and stop collecting kids coins !!!.

I've got a complete Panini 1977 Euro Football album at home. I do
on the odd occasion dust off the cobwebs and have a chuckle at Paul
Breitners mega perm. Did have the Argentina World Cup 78 album but that
was probably swapped at some stage for a filthy magazine. No jokes
    about sticker magazines please!

It happens. A friend of mine who supported Manchester City and
Grimsby lived for some years with a girl who supported Manchester
	United and Hull.

I remember going with this young lady to see Manchester United play
Southampton. Her comment after the game was, "I would say that this
was the worst game I have ever seen at Old Trafford, but I was here
last week watching United play Norwich".

I have the full collection of the 1970 England world cup squad from
Esso stations. The card that you pushed the coins into has a couple
of burst bits on the back, but they're sellotaped up..8*).
Otherwise it's in perfect condition. I also have the full set of
club badges for the 4 English leagues and two Scottish leagues of
that time, 1970ish. These are the sort of stick on enamel ?? type
    shiny crests of the clubs.

Any offers ????.........just kidding...I wouldn't part with them
for any less than a 65er conker.

Well!!!!!

I've got World Cup 78 & also two almost complete collections of
Soccer Stars 76/77. One was mine & the other me dad's!!!

We never did get hold of Sammy Mcllroy (I think that's how you spell it).

As it turns out, he now lives just around the corner from my place so I'll go
round & complain! Ha ha!!!!

Around the corner from Enterprise House (in fact opposite the Oarsman)
there is a shop which sells nothing but old picture cards and the like.
However, if your missing Alan Mullery from your 1970 Esso England World
Cup squad don't hold your breath. The shop tends to deal in real
collector's items with the emphasis on cards from the forties and
    fifties.

I was in touch with Panini last week asking them to send me
a binder plus inserts for their current card collection.

At the end of this month they will be releasing a STICKER
collection which I will also go for.

For those of you that collected the Italia '90 stuff from
Panini they are still holding stickers et cetera from up
to 5/6 years ago from league collections. It may be worth
giving them a call or the company who supplied your cards.

141.18my son would like to trade cardsGRUFFY::ZAHORARob ZahoraMon Jan 31 1994 20:1319
Soccer trading cards are finally appearing on the shelves of stores
here in the US. My 11-year-old son Brian has started collecting the
Upper Deck 1993 series. He has some duplicates which he would be
willing to trade for ones he needs or for cards from other collections
(he particulary likes clubs from England - the national team,
    Liverpool, Arsenal, etc.).

The following reply will contain the list of the cards in the series
indicating those he has for trade or needs. Please do not reply in
this note but contact me directly at GRUFFY::ZAHORA. He's willing to
swap cards thru the post around the world.

For those of you not familiar with the Upper Deck series they are a
premium plastic coated card about 6.4 x 8.9 cm. Mostly North American
players are featured. The text is in both English and Spanish. You
    can get a 10-card pack for US$1.00 and a 5-card set for US$0.69.

This note is being posted in the BECCA::USA$YOUTH$SOCCER (note 69) and
    TRUCKS::FOOTBALL.NOTE (note 141) conferences.
