114.0. "LONDON ANYONE?" by TOTH::CHAVES () Mon Nov 04 1991 23:32

With so many carriers offering direct Boston-to-London service
prices are very low and are likely to drop even further. Anyone
interested in a "DECcies FOOTBALL WEEKEND IN LONDON"? Here'
what I've found so far to be the best deal:

    For $448 we can get:

    - Roud-trip air-fare on Virgin Airways

    - 4 days and 3 nights accommodations at the London Tower Thistle Hotel.

    - 1 Pass to the watch a play at one of 20 London establishments.
(I could always call Virgin and see if they'll come up with
game tickets, instead. Doubtfull but worth a try).

    Restrictions:

    - Departs Boston on Thursdays and London on Sundays, only.

    - Available only until 12 December and again from 6 January til
      29 march.

I have no idea what the hotel is like but we can always ask one of the
London noters for information on it as well as tickets if and when we
    get something organized.

If you're interested post it here along with 2 preferred dates.

    Jose,

I'm already booked to be in the u.K (Uncle Ken found some money for
my airfare) between Dec 17th and Jan 5th.

If you manage to time the trip for then how about the great Liverpool
at Tottenham on Dec 18th, the incredible Liverpool at QPR on Dec 26th
or even the absolutely stupenduous Liverpool knocking some team or
other out of the F.A Cup 3rd Round on Jan 4th.

114.2Very tempting....GEMVAX::HILLTue Nov 05 1991 00:3817
I would LOVE to go to London for a weekend (or longer) and catch a
match or 2 while there. When I was a full-time employee, one of my main
goals was to justify to my bosses why I had to travel to the UK or
Europe for my job. I almost got a trip to Reading about 2 years ago,
but that fell through. At that time one of my main job-related contacts
there is a Hibs suporter, but I think I could have talked him into seeing
whoever was playing in the area.

My wife and I have this silly goal to get a house in the next year or
so while prioces in the area are still low(er than they used to be), so
I somehow don't think she'd go for the idea of a soccer weekend in the
UK. One of these days I'll make it over there, hopefully before too
    long....

Have a great time if you go

    Andrew,

Unless things pick up up at Anfield, the 'Great, Incredible, stupendous'
Liverpool, will be a great dissapointment to you. They are at present a
shoadow of their former selves, unless you are like most 'Pool
supporters and think anything that wears the red (with white diagonal
stripes over one shoulder) walks on water.

Andrew, Cheap faires are not available during the holiday travel
period, 12-Dec - 05-Jan. I think it would be a nice to plan a trip
for early Spring when the race for the trophies gets hot. It would
also gives us plenty of time to get tickets, etc. As in one of the
replies in this topic, other noters in Europe may join-in and make
this the second-best football weekend anyone has ever had.

    Re. previous couple,

I appreciate all the concern from fellow noters about my choice of
games but as I followed Liverpool regularly across the country from
the late 70's until last christmas I fell I need to see them during
my brief visit to the country - you can rely on me for an unbiased
    trip report (:==:)

    Re. 7,

unfortunately the dates for my trip are set as I have to visit my

If you guys go ahead with this idea, be careful about booking match
tickets too far in advance. Your chosen match could get switched to the
Sunday by the tv company at relatively short notice (2-3 weeks) which
might mean you won't be able to see it due to your return flight time.

Is anyone interested in a football weekend/week somewhere in Europe in
    the Spring?
I was also thinking perhaps we could put together a DEC-US team and
challenge our European friends and co-workers to a friendly match.

    1) Its cheaper than a weekend at Cape Cod or a ski resort.
    2) Choice of matches from several countries.
    3) We can challenge our European friends and co-workers to a match.
    4) You (Those that are married) have plenty of time to think of
a good excuse to leave the wife behind, if you so choose.

As a bonus, if we choose England, we may even get to meet, and play
    against, TGC.

    Additional attractive possibilities:

American Airlines: Round-trip Air, Boston-Manchester, for only $419.
Nothing else included. Holiday period travel
restrictions apply. Also, can not travel on
Friday, Saturday or Sunday. Must stay at least
one weekend. Maximum stay of 1 year. Must book
                       reservations 21 days in advance.

There are also very inexpensive tickets available to Holland and
Germany. Significant price increases after 15 March.

Note: Rumor has it (Travel magazine) there' a new Air price-war on the
horizon that will pit British Airways (through an American Airliner
they own, I think its Northwest) Lufthansa, KLM and Swiss Air
against each other all trying to gain market share in the very
lucrative US/Europe market. This could mean even better deals ahead.
And, don't forget DELTA. If the courts award them the old PAN AM
routes to Europe we'll see even better deals.

Depending on the number of people interested I may be able to get us
hotel and rental cars at bargain prices.

If you're interested you need not make a commitment, financial or
otherwise, at the moment. Just send me mail or reply to this topic.
I'll compile the names, shop around for the best deal and keep everyone
    informed.

In this case, rumour is almost certainly wrong. Unless U.S. law
has been changed in the last couple of months, it prohibits the
foreign ownership of U.S. airlines and shipping companies.

I'm not certain about the arrangements. But whatever they are,
from what I read there is some kind of a joint venture whereby
BA and a domestic carrier will be cooperating in US/Europe market.
As I recall, The US carrier will fly passenger from everywhere in
the US to BA' US hubs for connecting flights to Europe and viceversa.
Both carriers will accept tickets sold by the other and schedules
have been closely coordinated. same applies to rental cars, hotels,
    etc.

I'll try to find out more if there's a bargain to be found and post it
    here.

Tom,

in London next month. If you want to drink our Grolsch just come to Holland
but beware you'll probably go home feeling sick, not from the beer but from
the silly prices we charge for such a great beer :-) :-)

    - Its starting to look like we can get a team together for a
Spring-time trip and match. In the next 2 weeks I'll post
here the different packages available to England, Holland,
Germany and Belgium. We can then choose a site, make plans,
and start training to STUFF THE EUROPEANS in their own backyard.
(In the event of snow we can always give them a good stuffing
      indoors).

    - Ton, is it a deal? LOSERS BUY THE GROLSCH and, lets not forget:
      THE ICE!

So far we have: 4 people interested
2 considering it (one in not a DECcie)

And, chances are, Wales' favorite son from Georgia, Andrew, will have

interested in a fun trip to Europe, lets have your name.

JC,

Just say the word and the Citta will be more then happy to entertain you
with a match in Holland and certainly loads a Grolsch.

If you want to play in England get in touch with Andy Mitchell, his Albion
team is always in for the odd match.

BTW As already mentioned I will be in London from 12 till 15 dec but be
aware I will invade England again in january (9 till 13), the place will
be Birmingham and I'm sorry to say it won't be football but dogs this time

As I said, I've been keeping an eye open for Euro deals and here is
by far the best to date:

Portugal for $289.00, round-trip air. Nothing else included.
Offer good from 15 january to end of March.

I wouldn't mind going with a group of people to see Benfica play
in either a league match against Porto or Sporting or for one of the
upcoming Euro matches. How about vs Sampdoria?

Here I have a good connection and know for certain I can get good

Delta just became the latest airliner to offer $149.00, one-way,
fares to all its international destinations. Delta is also safer then
TWA as there little chance of them going out of business. I'll check
again with you noters after the holidays to see if we can get a team
