368.0. "Journeys to Israel" by PLDVAX::PKANDAPPAN () Mon Sep 21 1987 14:46

Yesterday I saw a beautiful documentary on Israel titled
'Journeys through Israel'. It was the most interesting piece
of filming I had seen. The author combined tales of
    1. historic battles at Masada,
    2. enchanting songs
    3. scenes of the judea mountains
    4. talks with bedouins (sp?) and past army buddies
    5. nostalgic recountings of his past days wandering around Israel
    6. tours of Jericho, Masada, and so many places I forget
    7. and some politics.
Pardon my ignorance, but I never imagined that there exists
succh beautiful places in the Mid-east; my images are filled
    with dry deserts and battlegrounds!

Unfortunately I turned on that channel (A&E) only after about 15mins
of the article had already been shown. Is there anyone who has a
copy of that on video tape?

Happy new year to all ye folks

A & E, like PBS, reruns most programs. Check your local listing
for details, as I probably will.

A & E ran the program (actually, a series of three 1 hour programs
entitled "Topol's Israel") a few months ago and I recorded the entire
series. Like you, I was amazed at the diversity and beauty of the
landscapes. My parents lived in Palestine in the middle 1930's
after escaping from Germany in 1935. They lived in a chicken coop
in a kibutz (don't remember which one) for a while but the climate
and the malaria didn't agree with my father so they had to emigrate
to Brooklyn via England. I showed them the video tapes when they
last visited and they loved them. It was kind of like the feeling
they had when, during their first return to Israel in 1969, they
drove down a tree lined road in the kibbutz where they had lived
and they realized that these were the very trees that my dad had
planted back in 1936. If you would like to borrow my tape, and
you live in the Marlboro/Northboro MA area, let me know.

    Shalom, Dave

If anyone notices the program being aired again, give an indication
here. I went to Israel , with a Temple Beth AM (Framingham) tour
this past July. It was very HOT but well worth it. I could not
visualize, regardless of what I had heard or read, the country and
it's antiquities. By the way Rabbi Splansky plans to go again in
the spring. He does it mostly with (and for) members of the Temple
but you are interested he might be amenable to "outsiders" going.
