It's funny: When I lived in Russia my internal passport said that I was
Jewish. They didn't consider me Russian. It didn't mean whether or not
I was religious. When I left Russia four years ago the authorities
stipped me of my Russian citizenship. But now in the US I am Russian
whether I want ot or not!

I am a software technical writer for Marlboro Software Publications,
currently working on a project in Salem, NH (facility NIO).
I just discovered this notes file, and am enjoying going through it.
There is always something new to learn...
I was born in Winthrop, MA, where I went to school with mostly Jewish
children. Later my family moved to Peabody, MA where I became best
friends with a Jewish girl, who was later to influence me about
Judaism and who also introduced me to my husband. Due to her
influence, I became very interested in Judaism, and, during my
engagement, became a Jew by choice. (I absolutely refused to ask my
husband to convert to Catholicism.) Anyway, I am very happy with my
choice and, when we visited Israel, I knew I had found my true home.

Note 47.0 Donna L. Rosenthal 1 response
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Donna L. Rosenthal (aka, ROSENBAGEL... no relation to this file... see
explanation below...)
I am a Senior Software Writer for Field Service Engineering in Stow, MA
and can be reached on the FSEcluster systems ZEPPO:, CHAPLN:, CARLIN:
or at DTN 276-8321.
Until 2 weeks ago, I was renting in Hudson, MA. I'm proud to say my (goy)
"significant other" (Les Gibeau) and I have bought our first home in
Thompson, CT, 20 minutes south of Worcester, MA, and "ONLY" 45 miles from
work.
Les feels right at home... the whole town is French. I've yet to explore
the Jewish population... the local church registry does not list any
temples within 30 miles...
This notesfile was brought to my attention by a close friend and former co-
worker (Ed Taranto). When I joined U.S. Area Software Services 6 years ago
(today is my 6th anniversary with DEC), I was the only Jew in a group of 15
people, and was dubbed "ROSENBAGEL" or "bagel" for short. There are people
in my old group who have NEVER ONCE, in 6 years, called me Donna. I've since
changed groups/facilities and only hear the name when I hear from/visit my
old gang.
I was born into a family of reform Jews. My Dad's family was Ashkenazi and
Mom's Hassidic. Mom and Dad felt orthodox/conservative too rigid and raised
me and my younger brother reform. Mom grew up in a house with her parents
and grandparents... shabbas drove my mother crazy as a child.
My brother, a grad student at Penn. State, is studying to be an astro-
physicist, believes in the "Big Bang" theory and all the concepts related
to it that nobody else in the family even PRETENDS to comprehend. The
idea or mere mention of G-d makes him laugh. I guess that makes him an
affirmed atheist.
I, on the other hand, believe in G-d, but (shamefully) know very little
about our religion. When someone asks me about a certain holiday or certain
traditions (such as covering mirrors during shivva), my answer is usually
something like, "I'll have to get back to you on that one...". I love Yiddish,
however, and never cease to amaze my grandmother when I spout off something
she didn't think I knew in Yiddish. Leo Rosten's "Joys of Yiddish" is perched
on my reference shelf in my office along with my tech. writing manuals...
When my Dad died in 1983, I was moved by Rabbi Friedman's words at his
funeral, and privately while speaking with me and my Mom. Soon after the
funeral, I bought myself a hardcopy of the Holy Scriptures and tried my
hardest to understand. I still read the booklet of memorial prayers that
the Levine Chapel (Brookline) gave me.
People will tell you I'm "just Jewish by birth", but I "feel" more Jewish
inside than I can exhibit on the outside. By exhibiting my "Jewishness"
I don't mean "sounding" Jewish... I mean things like being able to answer
the questions people ask me intelligently. After my Dad's funeral, when
I realized just how naive I am about my religious heritage, I asked the
rabbi for book recommendations... he suggested some book that explains the
origin of the Jewish people and the significance of our holidays. I wrote
down the name but somehow lost the piece of paper. If anyone has any good
books to recommend, (nothing TOO heavy - I write "heavy" stuff all day),
PLEASE either respond to this note or reply by VAXMAIL to the nodes I've
listed at the beginning of this reply.
Thanks for listening to me. I hope to gain a wealth of knowledge from
each of you. I've been naive long enough.

I have been with DEC for 5-1/2 years now. When I was hired by DEC, I "did
time" as a Production Supervisor in the old Board Shop (in the Mill). After
15 months, I was pardoned and allowed to join the "real" DEC, back in
Engineering. I have been working in Product Safety for 4+ years now, first
as a Product Safety Engineer in Corporate Product Safety, and subsequently
in what is now known as Low End Systems & Technology (LEST), managing a group
of Product Safety Engineers and the Product Safety Lab with two Technicians.
Prior to DEC, I have been a QC Engineer and served in Nuclear Project
Engineering capacities for Nuclear Submarines, and commercial nuclear power
plants. I am very happy that I now work in the commercial world and no longer
have to put up with the military/government bureaucracy (only the commercial
buraeucracy of DEC!).
I was brought up Conservative in the suburbs of Boston (South Shore), and
have found most of the traditional Synagogues to be too "Orthodox" for my
liking. My wife and I belong to a group called Ha-Yom. We hold High Holiday
Services at Wheaton College Chapel in Norton, MA. Women are accorded all
the rights and privileges that are reserved solely for men in almost all
Synagogues and Temples. The services are participatory and quite modernistic.
For the first time, I must admit that I really enjoy the services.

I was raised Orthodox and spent 12 years in a Yeshiva-type day school.
After spending senior year in a public high school, I decided that I
was missing out on a lot of interesting opportunities in life and
promptly quit keeping Kosher, Shabbos, and all that stuff. Much to
my mother's disappointment, but she still loves me. My father was
less concerned; as a Holacaust survivor, he lost his faith long ago
and just goes along with my mother to keep the peace in the house.
My brother is an Orthodox Rabbi, practicing in Berkeley, CA. He's
very liberal and religious and non-religious people alike feel
comfortable with him.
Although I'm no longer religious, I'm still very strongly Jewish and
am finding myself tilting back toward traditional values as I get
older. (I'm 29.) Case in point: In my late teens, I strongly (and
loudly!) stated that it doesn't matter who I marry as long as we
love each other, blah-blah-blah. During my mid-20's, I decided that
I would only marry a Jewish person so as not to hurt my parents;
we're very close. Now in my late 20's, I realize that I want to
do that for MYSELF.
As a child of a Holacaust survivor, I've been quite affected in my
outlook toward life, myself, etc. I'd be interested in discussing
this with other 2nd generation people or anyone else with an interest.
Perhaps good material for a new note...
Looking forward to much good noting in the Bagels file,
Marla

I find this notes file a great comfort, even though some of the entries are
too "technical" for me to follow. I have been returning to my religious

research (it isn't easy - most of my family was exterminated by Hitler).
I appreciate the sense of community I see building in BAGELS, and feel very

Hello there --
I'm a contractor working currently in Woburn on a Application
conversion project. I've worked on and off for Digital for the last
four years on both MIS and Engineering projects. Please don't include
me on any mailing list since my node address tends to change (been
at 6 different sites on 12 different nodes so far).
I am a Jew-by-choice (Reform). I became one during time I lived in Sulphur,
LA (Next to Lakes Charles on the Western border). The temple I attended
was the only one within 150 miles at the time (probably still is).
Living in the South, I got to see the results of the 'spreading of
gospel' at close range and it caused me to action on thoughts I
had been thinking in the back of mind for some time. Now please,
any Christian Readers of file don't take this the wrong way, I believe
fully in free choice for everyone, and for me, what I saw in the
South was not something I wanted to be a part of. I apoligise for
any possible offense and realize that the vocal minority there is
not doesn't represent the majority of Christians.
Enought said, Currently I live in Hopkinton with my wife, 3 children,
a 20# cat, a normal cat, and a dog. We all pleased with our choice
of the Jewish Religion and definitly like New England MUCH better
than Sulphur, LA.
I discovered this notes file on this current contract, and have
enjoyed reading, I hope it stays around. I'll give a browse whenever
I work at Digital (and have the time and if the SYSMGR doesn't mind
the NET LINK).
If there's any problem with contractors browsing this file, just
tell me and I'm gone (Just checking, hasn't been in the past, but
policy changes).
Shalom,
Dave

Parents were anti-semitic, anti-black, etc., but raised me to make

I'm a technical writer with Applications Systems Development. I've
been with DEC almost 5 years (pin and dinner soon). I live in the
tiny town of Boscawen, NH, north of Concord. (The town is so small
the post office address is Penacook.) My family consists of Joy,
my wife, and two daughters in college. Joy is not Jewish, and when
we were married everybody was against it because I was a northern
Jew, and she was a southern Christian, etc. The kids have had no
religious training of any kind, although one daughter considers
herself to be Jewish.
I was brought up as a nominal Jew in northern New Jersey (another
one), but am fairly ignorant of many things.
My many-times great-grandparents on one side were interpreters to
the Tsar in Russia (family name Solomon), and left at the start of
the Russian Revolution. My other grandfather was brought up as the
son of a rag picker in Keene, NH (family name Lipschitz, Americanized
to Lipsett). He went to New York and became a successful businessman.

| re. 66 - I know Daniel Seligman...He disappeared from Bergil about
2 or 3 years ago. His brother was a very good friend of mine when
we went to elementary school and then high school. I thought of
calling the elder Seligmans to find out what their boys were up
to...but never did.
I guess this means i better introduce myself:
Born Levi Rosenhand in Jezreel Valley (Afula to locals)
Came to U.S.A at age of 8. Lived mainly in n.j. and upstate
n.y. Name changed to Len. Nobody except some foreigners could
pronounce a 'levi' to rhyme with 'chevee'.
After graduating Weequahic High School in 1969 (that should have
been enough for anybody then and there...but no) went to Rensselaer
Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y. - and learned mathamagics.
Then four years in Rome, N.Y. working for government contractor
at Griffis Air Force Base in a branch of artificial intelligence.
In 1977, joined DEC in the field (back in n.j.) and worked mainly
with Bell Labs projects. Then, in October 1980 came back to
Israel. (Since then, I have seen my relatives in the U.S.
more often then when living in the U.S.).
(Married a Sabra -Ziva- in Israel and now have two little thorns -
Omri who is 2.5 years and Hadar a mere 4 months).

I was born in Germany after the war and my family emmigrated to

We kept a "kosher" home while I was growing up... but we were not

because that's where the immigrant families felt most comfortable
(everyone spoke Yiddish).
We'll all learn more about each other as we continue to "converse"

of that community.

I live in Cambridge, and my [regular] shul is the Harvard/Radcliffe Hillel
Orthodox Minyan. On average, I daven at Tremont Street about
3 times a year, Young Israel of Brookline about twice,
Shaare T'filah of Newton about twice and the Bostoner Rebbe's about once.
If you want to know the scoop about any of these places before
visiting, just ask me.
Also, if you get stuck in Cambridge over shabat and need home
hospitality, give me a call. I take care of arranging home hosp.
for my shul.
I was born in Hungary in 1956, moved to Chicago in 1962, attended Jewish
day schools through high school, and have spent alot of time in
Israel. (My family now lives there. I'll be there for the upcoming
holiday (succot), in fact.) Basically, I'm a fervent believer in
Jewish education (not necessarily through day schools, however).
I believe in education much more than I believe in aliya, prevention
of intermarriage, popularization of folk mysticism ala Lebovich,
halachic conversion, the havurah movement, or any of the rest of
it. A people without a common language can't stay a people for
long! [Am willing to accept and reply to flames on the above topic.]

I just found this file, and am interested in it so that I can learn
and understand more about the Jewish religion. My husband's
grandparents on his mother's side (and their family) are Jewish,
but his mother converted to Methodist when she married his father,
who also converted to Methodist from catholicism (does this make
any sense??) To make it more confusing, I am Catholic. Anyhow,
I want to be able to teach our children about the Jewish religion
and Jewish culture so that they can know all about their heritage
on both sides. Hopefully, I can learn lots from this file, though
I will usually be a read-only member til I have questions. Hopefully,
you won't mind if I ask a dumb question now and then.

side of the family was Sephardic and Orthodox, and my mother's side
was Ashkenazi. I was raised Reform. My wife, Ruth, was raised
Conservative.
We live in Pound Ridge, N.Y.- 50 miles outside NYC and just north
of Stamford, Ct. About 15 years ago, a havurah was formed here.
We've been members from the beginning. This wasn't the first organized
(it's more of a "happening" than an "organization") Jewish presence
in Pound Ridge, but it has endured much longer than the only
predecessor I'm aware of. We've brought up our daughter, Rica, in
the group, which makes her "Reconformodox". Rica goes to Bi-Cultural
Day School in Stamford, Ct., and will be Bat Mitzvah in June.
Ruth is the family authority on ritual and tradition. I bake challahs
and freeze them in once a month, and I can immodestly say that they
are reputed to be the best around. The recipe is a derivative of
one found in "The Jewish Catalog", and I'll put it in a note one
of these days.

The last time I registered for something they nearly sent me to
Vietnam..... so I have been very careful where I register since
then. Anyway, that was back in AUSSIE land in the late 60's.
So, as you probably guessed by now, Australia is where I grew up.
I was raised with no formal Jewishness but was fed a very steady
diet of Yiddishkeit at home. Being the only child I suffered more
than most at the hands of a Polish-Australian-Jewish mother - I
couldn't open my mouth without getting some food shoved down it!
Surprisingly so, I managed to survive and even finish university
with a piece of paper saying that I was an Aeronautical Engineer
(it was a good idea at the time). Once I found my wings I naturally
started flying but was landed by a JAP (A for Australian) who made
a mensch out of me (more or less).
We came out to Israel 10 years back for 6 months and have stayed
ever since. The rest is pure history:
- 3 kids, one war, 400% inflation and other minor irritations but
we're still here.
I have been with DEC in Hertzliya for the past 4 years eeking out
a living as I drifted thru various jobs.
So, if any of you are ever make it out here, give me a call. If
you just happen to bring a couple of cans of Fosters Lager I won't
say no.
(Any other Ex or ortherwise Aussie Jews out there?)

G'day (read HI)
My name is Michael Belakhov.
SNO78C::BELAKHOV.
I have been working for DEC Australia since May 1986 for the
Northern Districts Consulting unit (based in Sydney) in the role
of a Software Specialist.
I am Jewish but not in the least bit religious, i.e. the only
time I attend synogogue is when someone is getting married. My
Jewishness to me is a cultural identity rather than a religious
one.
I was born in USSR and was lucky enough to leave at the age
of ten, i.e. 1975. My lack of religion should not be attributed
to lack of knowledge, as I attended a Jewish religious school in
Australia for a number of years.
I am looking forward to contributing to this notes file and if anyone
would like some questions about Australia answered, please send
me mail on the above address or place the question in a note and
I will try to answer. I understand that Australia is currently
a very popular place to visit for Americans as our dollar is only
worth 68 cents US and we have by far the most beautiful and awe
inspiring land in the world.
P.S. We also have the very best beer in the world !!!

on "Longisland" at C.W. Post, then grad school at Southern Conn.
Worked in Washington DC as govt. librarian till 1980 when I
got tired of the transiency of people and relationships. Have
been in New England since then, and love it.

My primary interest in BAGELS is in trying to understand what I
may have missed or may have even lost in my own cultural heritage.
I am filled with questions and yet know not where to start. So for
now, this goyim is content to read, contemplate and wonder. Read,
that I might gain some small appreciation of the collective heritage
of this thing called 'Jewishness'. Contemplate, that what I know of
my own culture would be vastly different without knowledge of this
culture. And by the afinity I feel towards this people, wonder if
my ancestry has always been goyish.
For now...

Hello all,
I guess now that I've begun to regularly read and participate in
the "Bagels" conference, I ought to introduce myself....
I'm Sam Freeman (Shmuel Mordechai). I'm an engineering supervisor
in the Tape and Optical Products Group, located in Shrewsbury, MA
(near Spags). I've been with Digital almost 3 years.
Grew up in Teaneck, New Jersey, a suburb of Manhattan. Left to
go to college and never returned. I've been wandering ever
since - Boston, Dallas, San Francisco. Currently live in
Westborough, MA.
Grew up in a moderatively conservative home. In the home we were
kosher, outside we bent the rules. I guess that's why I stopped
keeping stricly kosher when I left. I still generally avoid pork
and don't mix milchig and fleshig though. Right now I'm a once
a year Jew. Rosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are the only times I
make a point of going to Shul. On the other hand, I'm very
conscious of my Jewishness. I guess I practice Judaism the way
Moses Mendelsohn (sp) might have.
I'm single, still looking for the right person. You can read more
about that, and more about me, in Bagels note 128.35.
I'm quite recognizeable, being a 4'2" dwarf. Business takes me
to most of the development sites. If you happen to see me, do
say hello.
/Sam

As we say in Jewish families from the South, "Shalom, Y'all!"
[My mother from Wilkes-Barre, PA, got a real kick out of that
when she met my dad.] My father's father's father helped build
Congregation Beth El in Norfolk, VA.
I'm Sam Levitin, and you'll probably get a good idea of my
Jewish background by reading my note on shuls. I've cooped with
DEC off and on since summer 83, and started full time this
summer. I work in Hudson in the Semicustom CAD group. I like
cycling, soccer, puzzles, and NOTing, to name a few interests.
(I read-only quite a few conferences, but if you look
carefully, I occasionally appear in DCL, PLI, and some of the
CAD conferences.)
Update: March 1988:
I'm now working within the Advanced Development group in SEG
on a CMOS VLSI layout synthesizer.
Mostly Read-only on bagels. Oh well.

32.168 | Happy news update of reply # 32.125 | DELNI::GRACE | Amazin' Grace | Thu Mar 17 1988 12:33 | 21 |
| Hi!
I'm updating some MAJOR changes since my previous entry at 32.125.
I graduated the DEC/MCC Technical Writing Program at MRO in August.
Then the start of my writing career began at LKG in NaC publications.
Phyllis and I were married in a small temple in Canton on November
1st. We went on our honeymoon to Disneyworld/Epcot and then cruised
to Nassau. We came back to live in Burlington for a short while
and continued to look for some type of housing for the beginning
of the year.
We bought our first home at the end of February and now live in
Westford. We attended the Welcome Wagon meeting for newcomers in
Westford last night and we're finally feeling like this is real!
I'm now at node DELNI::GRACE.
Shalom,
Russ

Oh... I'm sorry.
I'm 22 (23 in July) years old. I'm Christian. I was never baptized but
I was "christened" as a little baby. I believe in God, etc, but I
don't quite practice any religion, I don't go to church often.
I'm black, and I've been living in America since 1981. I came to
Boston in 1982, where I attended BU.
I'm quite interested in foreign affairs partly because I am foreign,
and I sometimes feel like a foreigner. I usually can relate to the
"underdogs."
Why am I in Bagels? I feel as though I'm living in a vacuum where
Jewish issues are concerned, and the vacuum has become more pronounced
with the recent problem on the Strip. Apart for the politics, I
know very little about traditions, history, food, and the all the
other things which help to define a culture. There is nothing worst
than ignorance.
Anyway, I've been browsed through some of the topics and I like what
I see. :-)

Born in the Bronx. Bar Mitzvah in Hackensack NJ. I'm getting old enough so that
I no longer like to quote my age, however, if you put a "57" in front of my
age you get the current Jewish year. (Birthday in October - I track very well.)
I am coming up on my 24th anniversary with DEC next month. Don't ask why I
haven't been into BAGELS before this, but I intend to catch up on every entry.
I started at DEC as a technical writer in the Mill. I am now a consulting
software engineer in Hudson Ma. in SEG/CAD. I live in Sudbury Mass. and belong
to a temple there. My wife comes from a small Jewish community in Rockland, Me.
I have a daughter, age 10, and twin boys, age 8.
My node name reflects my attitude towards my computer, not towards myself. I
also had a part in a Purim play 1.5 years ago and played the villian. (My kids
wanted to know why the audience was hissing me!)

Neat. We lived just outside Mexico City in 1964 and 1965. We were
amazed to find that there was a relatively large Jewish
population there. I found it quite a "trip", at the time, to
be speaking Yiddish with a Kosher butcher in Mexico City!
Sigh. Nice memories!

32.223 | From Italy | MLNOIS::DELLORO | | Wed Mar 29 1989 12:37 | 33 |
| Hello to everybody!
Cristina Dell'Oro
E-mail: Cristina Dell'Oro @MIO or MLN01::DELLORO
DTN: 7869-4725
Let's introduce my self: my name is Cristina Dell'Oro, working in
DIGITAL since 1982 in Milan (Italy). After 6.5 years in the Software
Services as Data communication specialist (decnet, psi, ibm
interconnect... do you know?), I've passed, last july, in the TELECOM
group (Information System).
This is my "DEC-history": now something more personal.
I'm not Jewish, but I'm interested in knowing more about Jewish culture,
religion and people: I've read some books (Marek Halter, Singer,
Zangwill) about these subjects and ... finally I've found this
notesfiles! I've already read some topics and I know that I've a
lot of things to learn, understand and feel, and I am more and more
interested!
My husband works for SCITEX wich is located in Herzlia,
in the same street than Digital. He has been twice in Israel (last
year and last month) to attend training: so I know a little more
about this country!
Thank you for your attention and sorry for my long speach: I thought
it was correct to introduce myself since I'm enjoying of this
conference!
Ciao from Italy!
Cristina

Jonathan Wreschner
With DEC Israel since Jan '87 after 17 years with IBM in Jerusalem.
Born in England, emigrated to Australia as an infant in 1948.
Lived in Melbourne in a strong Jewish environment.
Came on Aliya in 1969 as did the rest of my family (parents,
brother and sister).
Lived in Jerusalem until August '85 when we, that is,
my wife Yaffa (born in Washington D.C., but brought up
in Israel) and our 3 kids (Noam, Tal and Ariel) - moved
to Efrat where Avia was born, and where we built our own home
- really fulfilling "yishuv ha'aretz" - settling the land.
Efrat is situated in Gush Etzion (15 minutes south of
Jerusalem) between Bethlehem and Hebron. (I can claim to be the
only DEC employee to have ever lived in this area steeped with
nearly 4,000 years of Jewish history.)
Efrat is a vibrant community of about 400 families with
a population of kids that grows weekly (almost) "ken yirbu"
- may they increase even more.
The rabbi of the city is Rabbi Shlomo Riskin of
Lincoln Square, New York, fame, and though most of the city is
Torah-observant, there is no religious-coercion - those who
choose not to observe Shabbat do their own thing.
Also politically speaking, there is a variety of opinion -
both right and left of centre.
We have a daily shiur (Daf Yomi) every morning at 6:30 after
Shacharit.
I enjoy reading BAGELS when I get the chance, but sometimes I
get "a little steamed up" when I read some of the "authoritative"
comments that some noters spout, from thousands of miles away,
relying on what this or that journalist or cameraman decides
to report on the political scene to the whole wide world.
Without living in the midst of things, I don't believe that you
can really know how things are. That goes for my colleagues here, too.
BTW - how many other DEC people travel to and from work daily,
armed, not knowing where the next stone or fire-bomb is going
to come from, and if it's "just" going to break a window or
damage the bodywork, or perhaps cause serious personal injury
disabling the driver and leaving him helpless to face the mob...
WOW, that was some registration!!
Took me nearly two and a half years:-}

I am 1 semester short of graduation from Rensselaer Polytechnic

Engineering. I just recently joined the Blacknotes notesfile because
I was interested in their attitudes and perspective on things, and
it dawned on me, that if I was on that, I really should be in the
Jewish one too! (Actually, I didn't even know that there was one,
but I figured that there had to be!)( I'm not black, but I am jewish)
I have been asked questions lately regarding Judaism, and I
haven't known as many of the answers as I would have liked. Hopefully
this will help.
Good reading!

Costa Mesa (Orange County), California office
Hello, Bagelers! I am fairly new to DEC, only 13 months (eight of them
as an agency temp...); I work in Customer Services Account Support in
the Southern California District as a Dept. Coord. III. I love NOTES,
and this is one of my several favorite conferences.
I am 31 years (old?), and was raised in a semi-religious family. My
father was very Orthodox until he fought in WWII, and my mother is
rather Reform in her style of observance (for the most part...deep
inside, she still seems to think that she will be struck dead if she
even looks at a piece of bread during Pesach...). My parents raised
their children to make their own choice about religion, and we were
mostly trained only to observe the High Holidays, but did not regularly
go to temple.
I was born in Nantasket, MA, raised all over MA, as well as in RI and
MD (call me a corporate brat of Time-Life Mags/Books...), but did most
of my adolescence and teens in the Newton, MA area (Newton South High,
1974-75, Newton High School, 1975-76). I moved to the Central San
Joaquin Valley of Calif. (i.e., Barbara Stanwyck's "The Big Valley")
in 1978, and discovered that there are places where people have never
even met a Jew, and I had moved to one of them! In spite of this, I've
been in California ever since, but moved to SoCal in 1985...
I am married to a non-Jewish, non-religious man, Fred Hartleben, 27; he
wonders, still, why I flatly refused to give up my maiden name, but
that's another story...we have one child, Joseph Peter, 2.5 years.
(See note #1019.0 of this conference for my concerns on *that* score,
yet another version of a Jewish mother worrying...)
Now that I am "mature" (whatever that means), I am finding myself more
drawn toward practicing Judaism than in the heat and fire of the teens
and twenties, even though I am not a strong believer in G*d. This,
too, is probably part and parcel of the Jewish Mother Syndrome.
Anyway, thus came about my participation in this conference.
Now that I have related my entire life story, I should get to the
point...I would like to correspond via E-Mail or regular mail with
other Jews with similar backgrounds (i.e., semi-religious childhood,
non-religious early adulthood, etc., or married to a non-Jew and
raising kids, etc., etc.), as well as any persons who were in the
Newton High School(s) at the same time as I.
Sign me,
Wordy but interesting, I hope...
Marla (aka Malka Avigail)

I've been with DEC Canada since 1977, mostly with F&A. Since June '89,
have been the DECdirect CAS/Operations Manager in Kanata.
I'm not particularly religious but more prone to the history of our
people. Let me explain. When living in Israel, I worked as a shepherd.
I would take about 500 sheep out to pasture at about 4:30 am. One
morning, with the sheep settled down to grazing, I was sitting on a
rock watching the sun rise over the Golan Heights and washing the Upper
Galilee with that golden light that only comes at dawn. It was very
serene and pastural. It then came to me that King David was a shepherd
and that it was quite possible that he may have sat on this very rock
when he tended his flock. It was very moving for me because for the
first time I felt a sense of continuity to the land, to the Jewish
people and the Jewish cultures.
I hope I haven't bored you with this.
Shalom,
Stephen
I've been with DEC Canada since 1977

| since i'm participating in this notesfile, i thought it only fair to let you
know alittle more about me.
i am a christian, raised for the first 12 years of my life in the "bible
belt", alabama specifically, where prejudice against all who are different
from you is something you learn shortly after whether you root for alabama
or auburn in football. my contact with those outside my faith was minimal;
my parents saw to that. then, at 12, my father was transferred from alabama
to pittsburgh, pa. slowly, i came to be ashamed of my prejudice and through
a black friend, was able to come to grips with my feelings towards blacks.
but, still, my feeling that the jewish people were foreign clung. you were
different and i could not deal with it. a brief moment of light came when i
met a wonderful israeli woman named yael, who worked as a programmer at
massachucetts general hospital. in her, i saw something i had never seen
before. but she returned to israel, to haifa with her husband and two
daughters, shortly after i met her.
for years, i clung to a world that was all cut and dried, simple, pollyanna
pure. the news did not effect me, i shut it out. then i met a jewish man who
gently showed me that the world was not like that. we got into an argument
and, in my ignorance, i wounded him deeply regarding WW2. i didn't
understand the reaction, so i began to read. about the KZ. about what
people went through. about israel. and i was ashamed.
suddenly, for the first time in my life, things came together in
understanding. my studies of the bible, of hebrew and aramaic, connected to
these people i had spurned and considered foreign for so long. and it was
no longer so foreign to me.
i will never completely understand, never be a part of it except as the
basis of my own faith and the source of a respect i had not known before.
and i have become a christian zionist. and i no longer hide, although
coming aware in a world such as ours has been an extremely painful thing.
in my notes here, i may seem melodramatic. that is because i am, it is part
of my nature. and this awareness, this tiny piece of that which you have lived
with all your lives, is very much in the fore right now. so i ask for your
patience. there are many things i would say in that language which says so
much, but i'm rusty and never been good at tranliterated hebrew.

| My name is Deborah Israel Luskey and I am principal
engineer in MA (Thin Film Heads).
I am soon leaving DEC (June 14th is my last day) and
I have been reading this notesfile for a while now.
I love Israel - my grandfather was born in Jerusalem
and my grandmother lives in Bat Yam and Asheklon. My
parents escaped Egypt in '59 during Nasser and went to
Brasil, where I was born soon after. In 1977, my parents
my brother, and I emmigrated to the USA, and my grandparents
went back to the promised land. My grandfather passed
away, and my grandmother continues to enjoy Eretz Israel.
Both my husband and I hope to live in Israel some day, for
a while or a long time - he's a physician (hematologist/oncologist).
Today, I decided I want to ask if anyone knows of any
operations for Ethiopian Jews going on right now. I'd
like to send my contributions soon before I leave DEC,
so I can take advantage of the matching gift program.
Anyone?
Shalom,
Deborah

| I am 'conditionally de-registering' (although I'm not sure I ever
officially registered).
I am in the middle of a parental leave, and also am about to move to
New Haven, CT. I will be looking for work near New Haven, preferrably
with Digital, however, if that doesn't work out I probably will never be
back to make my infrequent contributions to this notesfile.
Best wishes to all the interesting people I met through Bagels.
Look me up in New Haven (I'll be in the phone book) if you ever get there,
and please let me know of any interesting software/tech support/marketing
support-type jobs in the New Haven/Hartford area. (I'll be reachable at
VISUAL::ROSENBLUH for a while yet, although I'm not logging in on a daily
basis while we move.)
Thanks and goodbye.

32.267 | I suppose I should speak up... | SHALOT::NICODEM | Who told you I'm paranoid???
| Thu Oct 03 1991 01:21 | 36 |
| I'm not sure if no replies to this note in over 3 months means a
loss of readership, or lack of interest... or just that others, like
me, have been enjoying this conference without letting others know
about it! 8^) Since I've been here for over a year now, I suppose I
should correct the latter:
Name: Frank Nicodem
Location: Charlotte, NC (OPA)

E-mail: SHALOT::NICODEM (or Frank Nicodem @OPA)

Role: Software Engineering (Cross-Industries Platforms and
Applications EIC)
I am a Christian, but one (perhaps of the few?) who is keenly aware
of my Jewish "heritage" -- and, in some ways, very jealous of those
who can claim a more direct "kinship" with those who I have used as
role-models all of my life: Moses, Joshua, David, Daniel, Ezekiel,
Nehemiah, Joel, Deborah, Esther, Ruth, and so many more.
Last December I travelled to Europe at the very worst of the Gulf
War -- and this conference was one of the sources of information (and
comfort) in preparing for that trip. A special thanks to those who
contributed so much during that time.
As a side issue, I am currently beginning a role as project leader
for a project out of the ISO ACT, and am very excited about working
with the folks there. Although in these difficult times I'm sure that
it's a "pipe dream", I have the vaguest of hopes that this project just
*might* call for that one-in-a-million chance... the opportunity to
travel to Israel (when someone else is paying, of course! 8^) ).
Thanks to all of you, and forgive me for being a "silent reader"
for so long.

Religion: Hindu
I have been with DEC Australia for all of 3 months and enjoying it.
I would like to know more about the Jewish faith as I have very little
knowledge about it. Also being an Indian I know that my country has
given shelter to the Jews and gave them the freedom to worship. I
think it's the only country in the world that allowed the Jews to
flourish and did not condemn them. I have a respect for you all and
your faith and hope that we could learn alot from each other.
I wish you all well and hope that I make many friends

Marital Status:Irrilevant (to you,of course).However,Single at present.....
Religion: Catholic (but the very tolerant kind).Hardly ever go to

Why am I interested about Bagels ???
Because it's all so different,I've never had any contacts with the
Jewish community/society/world except for 2 ex-colleagues of my
previous firm.
The younger one was quiet proud of his heritage (the Roman community is
the oldest one in Europe). The elder hid the fact he was Jewish, but once
while we drove past the Synagogue he told me we where in the (ex)Ghetto
-it's called Portico D'Ottavia-just to poll my opinion, without knowing
I knew he was a Jew.
Then I met a colleague from Dec-Israel(Haifa,I think) who came over to
provide temporary manpower to our field service. His name is AMI MEIRON.
Anybody know what has become of him???? I appreciated his sense of humor
and of course his professional skills.
Ciao.

32.279 | A short presentation | MLNCSC::MISLER | | Wed May 27 1992 21:22 | 21 |
| It is a long time that I have been a silent listener of this conference.
The reason of this,is that I have a particular relationship to the Jewish
world, coming from my family feelings and history that I wanted to explain
well (and this is not easy for me,with my bad English).
At least I decided to start with a short presentation, and I will come back with
a longer one when ready.
By family,my mother is Catholic and my father Jew;both of them are not religious
and my mother had also a strong feeling towards Jews, much before her marriage,
because of their persecutions.
Even if with any religious education,I was grown mostly in a Catholic
environment. In spite of this,or better because of this (I will explain it
better in the longer presentation),I feel to be part of the Jewish world and
not of the Catholic world.
It is not a religious choice (I am not religious). It is more the feeling of
belonging to a people. This feeling is in part rational (I find myself,my
sentiments,my opinions so well represented in the Jewish literature, for example)
and in part emotional, coming from the very deep inside of myself.
I hope this is enough for the short presentation.
I will come back soon (I hope) with the longer one.

Howdy all... My name is Steve Lokietz (pronounced Lo' keets) and I'm
on the PATHWORKS team in the Alpharetta CSC. Grew up in the NYC area,
lived in San Fran/Silicon Valley for a while, back to NYC area, now
here in the Atlanta area, since July '92.
I am not a practicing Jew. The reasons for that are not really
relevant here. There are many things about Jewish laws and
customs that are very interesting to me. After my Bar-Mitzvah I
attended "Hebrew High School" 6 hours a week and learned a lot of
things in more depth than I had in 3-7th grade (of course it has been a
while). I am grateful for my culture and the gifts I have inherited
from it.
I've been following and participating in the conference for a couple of
months now. I appreciate when people make an effort to see others'
points of views, and are open to discussions that value differences,
instead of trying to "shout" others down and make them wrong when
opinions differ.

32.295 | Another Happy Noter | POCUS::FEINMAN | | Tue Apr 13 1993 00:02 | 38 |
| Hi, everyone,
I have been at DEC for 3 1/2 years but I just discovered this file.
Wow, I am so excited I don't know where to begin. I have just looked
at a couple of entries and I am very impressed at the commitment,
knowledge and open-mindedness expressed here, not to mention the
diversity of opinions. I look forward to joining in, hopefully, at
some point with more than questions and awe, but I guess every file
needs that too.
I will be celebrating my fifth "birthday" on June 14th, flag day. That
was the day of my mikvah and my official conversion. You, my fellow
noters are now privy to information that very few people have, only a
handful of my coworkers. It is difficult enough to deal with
anti-semitism and prejudice against anyone who is different without
getting into the whole issue of being Jewish by choice as opposed to
Jewish by birth, most people just assume (incorrectly in my case) that
I converted to please my husband, then my husband-to-be). In reality,
it was the culmination of a lifelong search, well, not lifelong, but
one I began in 1978 when I started exploring alternatives to the
essentially non-religious way I was raised.
I just loved the Conservative Judiasm which I ultimately embraced and
my husband and I keep a kosher home and attend services fairly
regularly (although we find ourselves drifting in and out of the habit
when we allow other obligations to intrude). I try to keep kosher
outside the home as well and my family of origin and my friends are
remarkably supportive and respectful of my beliefs. Still, it is a
struggle and I have my moments, and my questions...I hope to have some
of them answered here.
Thank you for being here.
Sylvia
P.S. I don't know how long I will be able to contribute to this file,
as I will probably be TSFO'd at the end of the fiscal year, but I
decided to begin anyway.

Unfortunately, some people in the Jewish community seem to regard Jews by
choice as not quite authentic. Some of my friends who have converted to
Judaism have been exposed to subtle manifestations of this prejudice.
The reality is that most Jews by choice are highly committed to Jewish
belief and practice, often more so than those who were born Jewish.
It is human nature to be less than accepting to others who are different.
It should be a fundamental part of Jewish values to make extra efforts to
rise above our natures and respect and value those who are different.

| RE: -1, Thank you. What a lovely thought. I had the same reaction
to your note that I did when I first heard that it was actually
improper for anyone to mention that a Jewish person had converted after
the day of that person's mikvah. Boy, I know a coupla people who can't
STOP talking about it but that's THEIR issue, not mine.
Happy as a kosher chicken with my choice, and thanks again.

| G'day all,
I've just decided to look at this note after knowing of its existence for
such a long time but just never had a spare moment.
I work in DECdirect in the Rhodes office in Sydney Australia. I'm a Sales
Support Specialist. I was in the Customer Support Centre for 3 years
supporting the PATHWORKS product set. Good fun but I needed a change. I
now support the sales force for High-end PCs and Workstations and software.
I'v lived in Sydney all my life with the exception of 3 months living in
Fiji and several months travelling Europe. I've never been to the U.S. but
I have family and friends over there so oneday will make the crossing!
I am married (4 months at time of writing) and we are both jewish. My wife
likes the traditions of Judaism but is not sure about the G-d concept. I
like to think there is something out there but like the traditions and
values more than anything.
I'm interested in Jewish history and learning some Hebrew sometime, at
present I'm tackling Italian....why not!
If any of you travel to Australia it would be nice to meet you and as I
have found when travelling it is nice to know someone in another country,
particularly if they're Jewish.

the topics, I think you'll find quite a range of interests and Jewish

I guess the question I'd ask is "Which of the many God concepts?" See,
for example, Notes 509.10, 518.7 and 135.39.

I've been with the company for many years; however, I have just stumbled

however, in November, 1991, I started a 3-year relocation contract to
work for Digital Services (now Professional Services) in Europe. The
office is just across the border from Geneva, where I usually attend shul.
I also travel a fair amount in Europe, and I try to find kosher food and

My "home" is in Lexington, Mass., where I have belonged to Temple Emunah
for many years; I get back there relatively often.
