There are quite a few Gaklwgians over here at present and we are
thinking of organising a day out to watch it.

The galway lads did well...even if they won by that soft goal (which is
an insult to the word soft). They were the better team by far.. I
suppose Tipp were bound to have an off day now and then -) -) -).
A good day out...Mr Darcy himself appeared for the match..
Kilkenny had an easy win over Antrim..and must be favourites beat
galway...then again tipp were favourites on Sunday.

1257.7 | MONEY NOT SPORT | MACNAS::SMORAN | | Thu Aug 12 1993 11:06 | 13 |
| There are a few of us Galwegians in Ayr at present and it seems we will
not be able to see the final live. The GAA have sold the T.V. rites to
CRYSTALIS who in turn have sold them to RTE (IRELAND), BBC (N. IRELAND)
& SATANTA (BRITIAN). BBC are not showing the match live and Satanta has
no outlets in Scotland. Does anybody know if you can pick up RTE
anywhere near AYR. We keep on hoping.
Stephen
P.S. Channell 4 used to show it for the 4 years and everybody in
Britian got a chance to watch it but it seems its money that counts
nowadays not the sport.

1257.8 | Irish pub or Cinema? | MACNAS::BHARMON | September 17th, 1993 | Thu Aug 12 1993 14:59 | 9 |
| Stephen,
Is there any Irish pubs in Ayr. When my husband, Eamon, used to
work in Southampton in his single days, he always saw the All-Ireland
Finals either in an Irish pub or a cinema, where they would beam
it in via-satellite.

1257.9 | NO IRISH CLUBS IN AYR - YET | MACNAS::SMORAN | | Fri Aug 13 1993 06:38 | 10 |

There are no Irish clubs in AYR. Santana have the rites so they
would know if it was been beamed into Scotland. Its looking
more and more like the radio, but who cares when Galway wins it
anyway.

that pick up NI BBC so you should eaily find a pub.
Good luck to Galway.

| Enough talk about the hurling, let's talk about Sunday's football semifinal
between Mayo and Cork. I suppose ye all have Mayo written off already,
but I'll tell ye now that Jack O'Shea won't let them out on the field
without fire water in their bellies to beat Cork.
So let's see the West Awake in '93!

Fire water in their bellies!!
They will need every drop !....Should be a good match...Mayo very lucky
to have Liam "punch-in-the-face" Macale playing. How he only got a two week
suspension after being caught on camera ..off the ball..punching an
opponent is amazing...Considering the suspension Tommy carr got for
giving a donegal player a tap on the leg -).
Still would be good to see Mayo get through...But two lucky breaks for
the west in 2 weeks would be hard to believe.

1257.16 | Mayo, God help us. | ISEQ::JSMYTH | | Mon Aug 16 1993 09:05 | 38 |
| OK, OK, no slagging please... I was at the match and yes it was
disastrous, however the scoreline is a bit misleading, there were three
goals in the last four minutes for Cork, but it certainly was a
drubbing by an exceptional Cork team.
On a more positive note, Jack O'Shea's management has been good for the
Mayo team. Gone are the "Up we go with Willie Joe" days, Mayo made
great passing movements from the back line up to the half-forwards, but
there they ran into a brick wall defence, and failed to convert most of
their chances. Believe it or not they had most of the posession in the
second half.
I'm afraid yesterday was probably the last day TJ Kilgallon will wear
the green and red of Mayo and for those of us in the stands the
decision not to bring him on at half-time is a real head-scratcher.
Worse still they brought on that useless gubaan (can't find the fada
key) Padraic Brogan. Once again he put on a thoughtless and
disaster-ridden performance for Mayo. His passing attempts had to be
seen to be believed and he broke Mayo's run of play at least three
times in the second half. Anthony (Fat Larry) Finnerty played well when
he came on, a cute hoor of a player if ever there was one, but the tide
against him was just too strong and he failed to convert as he did in
'89.
Anyway it was a sad day for me, as I won't be in Croke Park again for
many years and I had hoped to see Mayo do better. I hope Jack O'Shea
stays as Mayo manager, as he certainly has changed Mayo's style and
another year or two could see great rewards for the effort. Now all he
has to do is teach the half-forwards how to kick points.
Ah well...
Joe.
PS we were laughing at the Galway minors for losing by so much, the
biggest cheer of the day was when they scored their first point with 20
minutes gone in the second half. I suppose what comes around goes
around.

A cracking game yesterday, Derry came back and beat Dublin by a point.
Probably the best football game of the year.
That Derry team have bottle and should beat Cork.
Galway beat Cork in the U21 Hurling Semi-Final on Sat. evening.
Galway V Kilkenny in Minor, U21 & Senior. Football maybe bad in
Connacht but hurling is in a VERY healthy state in Galway.

Galway won because Tipp had not had to play a game of Hurling in Munster this year.
Also Tipp on the day did not have a forward worthy of the name (with the exception
of Michael Cleary). It should also be noted that the Tipp sideline panicked and
upset the team without any need. This gave great encouragement to Galway. That and
the candidate for the flukiest goal of the year.
It also didn't help that Tipp were not able to stand up to the physical intimidation
Even so there were still in it with 10 minutes to go. Signs of panic crept into the
Galway team at this point. In the end Tipp could easily have stolen this one.

I listened to the game on the radio...sounded like a real cracker!
Channel 4 are showing the highlights in the UK (at least in England, hopefully
in Scotland too) at about 12:30 AM (yes AM!!) Tuesday morning so get the VCR
set. Kilkenny won both minor and senior games by 5 points, apparently the
minor game was excellent also. So the kute kats kreep ahead of us once more!
Galway showed the result against Tipp was no fluke though so I wouldn't be
putting too much money on a Kilkenny 3-in-a-row.

made their return trip to the county stopping off for speeches in

the city at 12 midnight with large crowds to meet them along the way.
The under 21 team is to meet Kilkenny for their game next Sunday in

Well Galway lost this one because they went and opened a
SUPERMACS fish and chipper in Kilkenny without proper planning
permission. That upset the Cats.
Joking aside this one was a cracker. All the hype and planning
in Galway was about holding Power and D.J. Carey. However
Kilkenny had a trick or 2 up their sleeve. P.J. Delaney gave
Sean Tracey a roasting. He scored 1-4 and made another 1-2 off
the full back. The match was basically won and lost in this
area. Amazingly Galway made no attempt to correct this area.
Padraig Kelly for Galway had a good second half. However his
immediate opponent scored 4 points and made a few more.
Kilkenny as usual won this one from the backs. Tight
unspectular marking and flicking. No use trying to run with a
ball on a hurley in there. It will be removed smartly. Pat
Dwyer - the Kilkenny full back was sound - even though carrying
a serious groin injury.
My abiding memory of the minor match was one little gem of
skill. It was a ball- tapped from the air into a forward's hand
and the tapped neatly over the bar. I havent seen that done
for a long time.
