I am not sure what part of Oughterard he was in,but after
leaving there,the next place he was sighted was in the VIP
box at the Meath V Derry hurling match.
I suppose the Irish vote could do him good!!
By the way Meath won or should I say ran away with it,a
terrible game it was.

As you probably know, Gary Hart has since returned to
the States. There was an extensive (and interesting) interview
with him in one of yesterday's Sunday papers. One comment in there
might give you an idea of where in Oughterrard he was. It made
reference to "a local beauty spot, called the Hill of Doon".

| Funny you should mention the Hill of Doon, for that is the one
area of Oughterrard I'm familiar with. A branch of my family,
the Molloys of Newton Mass, have ancestral property in Derrymoyle,
which is along the shores of the Corrib, about 4 miles before the
Hill of Doon. Further along the shores are huge summer estates
once owned by English. Now, there are also German, Dutch, and
Irish owners. Hart probably stayed in one of these. You can only
see those estates from the lake.
I didn't think Hart was Irish. In fact, he changed his name when
he went into politics. His former name was Hartpence, which I suppose
could be Anglo-Irish.

My neighbours would never forgive me,living in Co.Meath and
all that.
Thats right its Galway that plays football,isnt it eh..!!!

According to this article and the news media he stayed in a modest
bungalow (owned by a family called Clancy?). With reference to
his ancestry, his great-great Grandfather came to the States from
Germany in the 1760s but Hart thinks they had originally emigrated
to Germany from Ireland as part of the Wild Geese.
Maybe I should send you the article - let me know.

| Leaprechauns are everywhere
Re "Hill of Doon" area.
This location is near a cul de sac, that runs out of Oughterard
along by the western/southern shores of Lough Corrib. It is
approximately 7 miles past the Derrymoyle area. You have to pass
a village called Glann (which is really a couple of houses and a
church and school). THe Hill referred to is up at the very western
tip of Lough Corrib (on the northern shore). It is a beautiful
spot on a summers evening, and there are plenty of picnicing areas
all around there. Dermot O'Sullivan knows this place well as we
was up there with our families once. Plenty of brown trout and the
odd salmon, and pike if you're a fishing nut. Hundereds of square
miles of lake with uninhabited islands dotted all about (for stopping
off when you want to eat the packed lunch or drink whatever you
brought along).
Snake lives beside paradise for some.
