| Probably the most famous film ever shot in Ireland was Lawrence
Olivier's Henry V. The battle of Agincourt used hundreds of locals
who were paid on the basis they turn up and bring their own
horses and in Olivier's words "What horsemen they were!".

| Leaprechauns have seen the good, the bad, and the awful.
My favourite is still the "quiet man" (John Wayne & Maureen O'Hara).
There are some crappy parts, but I know most of the locations used,
and I also know that the director, John Forde, used some terrific
tricks to get some of his effects.
SOme of his scenes in this movie are like paintings, the use
of light is so good. I think Forde was transferring the techniques
of B&W to the colour medium. Its fairly common knowledge that John
Wayne had the hots for Maureen O'Hara, indeed some people speculate
that one of Maureen's daughters is in fact Miss Wayne. Wayne enjoyed
himself both on and off the screen during that movie, and in fact
if his performance in this movie is carefully examined it is much
better than in True Grit, where he got the oscar.
I can still see it, John Wayne digging the patch of ground in
front of the cottage and planting seeds, then picking up a bunch
of wild flowers and in gentle romantic fashion offering them to
Maureen. When I last watched this I said - what have cowboys come
to.???
I reckon the best movie, must have been Ryan's Daughter, in which
Robert Mitchum (normally boring), excells himself. David Lean is
a genius.
Snake dosen't go to the movies anymore.

Actually the photographic quality of a movie is the result of the
efforts of the cinematographer. The director sets the scenes and
gets the actors to perform correctly (i.e. his way). One of the
best cinematographers is Laslo Kovacs (sp?). He has photographed
some of the most wonderful scenes, with beautiful etheral qualities.

| I'm surprised no one has mentioned "The Rising of the Moon" based
on either some O'Casey or Frank O'Connor stories. But the best
movie I ever say filmed in Ireland was "Quackser Fortune Has a Cousin
in the Bronx". Gene Wilder played as a manure collector in Dublin
when the last of the CIE horses were being decommissioned. An
absolutely hysterical movie! Some great Dublin scenes.

Cal was made here, in Ireland, by an Irish film company, with an

Quakser Fortune, I can remember, as some of it was filmed at the

some of the extras, having rowed against them.

rarely done on film an accurate portrait of Irish society. At times
it is humourous, at times heart-rending, but always mystically
lyrical and topical. As you might gather, I regard it highly, and
would strongly reccommend it to ANYONE, Irish or not.

| Seven months late (hiding on the bottom of the ocean) but "Das Boot"
was a great movie, did have the crew singing "Tipperary", don't
know if it was John McCormack... FWIW, Tipperary trivia, I read
somewhere that the song is about the First-World War red-light
district of London, rather than Co. Cork. I think Tipperary
was slang for a "knocking shop" of some kind, and there are
references to Leicester Square, Picadilly, etc, as other locations
for getting into bad company.

232.14 | The west is very different. | GAOV08::MHUGHES | | Mon Sep 12 1988 15:24 | 18 |
| Leaprechauns will add.
Tipperary in the song is a reference to a garrison town called
Tipperary in Co. Tipperary, in Ireland.
The author of the recruiting song never visited the town. He found
the name in a directory of British Army garrisons.
Tipperary is no longer a garrison town and indeed it had a radical
reputation in the Irish war of independence againt the British
from 1919-1921 The first shots in this war were fired at Soloheadbeg
which is very close to that town.
In fact singing the WWI song is still sometimes frowned upon in
that vicinity, because of its British connotations.
Snake lived not too far away in another garrison town.

Since Irish (or other Celtic for that matter) movies are still so
few and far between, it's been suggested to me that I cross-post to
s.c.c a review I sent recently to rec.arts.movies.reviews. It's of
a wonderful new film by Neil Jordan ("The Company of Wolves" and
"Mona Lisa"):
Jimmy (Niall Byrne) and Rose (Lorraine Pilkington) are best friends.
They're in their late teens, and live in Bray, a tired old seaside
resort town not far from Dublin. It's summer, they're bored and
they hate "this dump", so they entertain themselves by strolling
around town inventing lives and histories for the people they
encounter on the way. The little old lady staring out to sea
doesn't move when an old gentleman with a cane walks by, but Jimmy
and Rose know that "her heart leaps when he passes her". A group of
nuns laughing and splashing in the waves seem so young and childlike
"because they're married to a man they've never seen". The bland-
looking businessman in a cafe -- "the drabness of his life was so
complete as to have its own fascination". Rose writes all this down
for future reference. You'd think that Bray and all the people in
it existed only for Jimmy's and Rose's amusement and scrutiny.
Jimmy lives with his father, Sam, (Donal McCann) a heavy drinker who
repairs musical instruments by day, and leads a dance-band by night,
at a local hotel ballroom. Sam plays the saxophone, as does Jimmy,
but it's clear that the son has much more talent than the father.
Jimmy's mother apparently died when he was still a baby. Sam
wonders why Jimmy seems to hate him after all he's done for him. It
hasn't been easy raising a child alone.
Rose wishes that she and Jimmy could be more than best friends.
Then two things happen to change everything: a mysterious and
beautiful woman "from abroad" (Beverly D'Angelo) steps off the train
from Dublin. And the circus comes to town...
That's as much as I'm going to tell. The plot is paper-thin, and
it's given away to the audience almost immediately. The joy of this
gem of a movie is in the acting, and the telling of the story, and
its delicious mixture of the commonplace and the magical. Yes, it
does at times teeter dangerously on the brink of "mellerdrama" or
cliche, but it's always saved in the nick of time by the wonderful
actors, or a breathtaking directorial turn.
This is one of those movies that sends you floating out of the theatre
on a cloud, and makes you smile uncontrollably for days. Go see it!

Well de group got together and saw De Commitments on Friday and
was suitably pleased.
But I'm entering this note to point out that three Irish films
are being shown during the Boston Film Festival currently on.
They are all reviewed in today (Monday's) Boston Globe.
The program summary for each is as follows:
Behind The Mask: 75 mins. 1989.
After 20 years of violent conflict in the North of
Ireland, this is the first documentary on the Irish
Republican Army (IRA) as seen through the eyes of
activists from the present campaign. It records on
video the opinions and experiences of the men and
women who carried the struggle for Irish independence
into the present day. Behind The Mask aims, not to
represent the familiar landmarks of the history books,
but to examine the personal motivations, actions and
sacrifices behind those events, tracing the common
experience of the geurilla army.
Hear My Song:
A slightly shady concert promoter, Mickey O' Neill, gets
into a lot of trouble when he books an imposter posing
as the legendary tenor Josef Locke. To restore his
reputation and reclaim the girlfriend lost in the
mix-up, O' Neill travels to Ireland to find the real
Locke and persuade him to return to Britain one last
time.
Trouble The Calm: 52 mins. 1989
David Fox's film blends together past and present,
stories and news reports, images and sounds, to
evoke his personal vision of the state of Ireland
today. His own voice reads his almost poetic
narrative, as different scenes are juxtaposed,
one seemingly contradicting the last.
Do let me know if anyone takes the plunge and sees them.

The latest "Irish" film to open here in Galway, a few weeks ago, is "Into
The West" starring Gabriel Byrne and his missus Ellen Barkin. It is
directed by Englishman Mike Newell but practically everyone else
working on the film is Irish. It's also produced by Gabriel Byrne.
The film concerns 2 young itenerants living on a council estate in
Dublin which resembles a post-apocalyptic wasteland. They befriend a
handsome white horse and they head for the West of Ireland to sample a
pint in the Quay's bar, well not really. They are persued by their
drunken father, Byrne, the garda siochana and a nasty industrialist,
boo!
The cinematography is as ever stunning which normally means a lousy
script but despite cliches and some melodrama it's a cracking good
yarn. It has done amazing business in Ireland since it's release over
1/2 million punts which only "The Commitments" has bettered.
BTW the distributers are so confident of it's success in Britain that
it opens in the U.K on the 11th Dec, same day as Home Alone 2. Now
there's confidence for you. No idea when it is released in the U.S.

232.56 | Irish Actors | MPGS::RIORDAN | | Tue Aug 24 1993 14:07 | 28 |
| I am trying to find other movies/miniseries done by 3 Irish actors (I think
they are all Irish, if not Irish then English) that I saw recently in the movie
Patriot Games with Harrison Ford.
The actors I am trying to find information on are Sean Bean (I believe he
played the part of Sean Miller in the movie) Thora Birch (played Annette)
and Patrick Bergin (playing Kevin the leader of the Terrorist group).
They were all playing the parts of terrorist trying to abduct a royal in
the movie. (The movie I was watching is a VCR recorded version and it does
not list the credits so the spelling of the names of the actors may be off
a little.)
I can find some other works that Patrick Bergin and Thora Birch have done,
Frankenstein (wonderful mini series starring Patrick Bergin) and Robin Hood
(featuring Patrick Bergin and I have to admit I like Patrick's Robin Hood
more than Kevin Cosners) and Enchanted April with Thora Birch (sp?).
(Enchanted April has received several awards and should have it is a
wonderful movie) but would also like to find out if there are others that
I have missed. I do not know of anything done by Sean Bean other than the
movie I have seen (maybe he's new to the movies, I am not sure).
I would be interested in other movies/mini series/Theater that they have done.
If anyone out there could give me some help I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Mary

Mary,
I am more familiar with the films of Patrick Bergin than the other
actors mentioned. Bergin is defenitely Irish, doubt if the other 2 are.
Bergin starred in the following films:
The Courier - An Irish film, also starring Gabriel Byrne and Cait
Riordan(any relation Mary?) formerly of the Pogues and also married to
Elvis Costello. This is probably available on video. (The film not the
wedding :)
Sleeping with the Enemy- a stlock horror Hollywood flick also starring
Julia Roberts (lucky Mr Bergin)
Mountains of the Moon - A british film set in Africa.
He would have also starred in lots of Irish TV shows.
Sean Bean was in "The Field", I think. If he is the actor I'm thinking
of, he played Richard Harris' son.
Know nothing of Thora Birch.
Will post any further info.
Regards
Des.

| Taken from this week's NME (New Musical Express)
Bono, Sinead O'Connor and Gavin Friday have all contributed towards the
soundtrack of a new Guildford Four movie "In the Name Of the Father", due
out on January 25th.
The score, which is currently being completed in LA, is largely the work of
Friday, who served as music consultant on the film. The title track
features Bono's vocals, while Sinead sings "Thief of the Heart", which is
expected to be the first single lifted from the album.
The film, which premires in Dublin next month, stars Daniel Day Lewis and
Emma Thompson and tells the story of one of the Guildford Four, Gerard
Conlon, and his father Guisseppe, who died in prison.

The following also appeared in The Irish Times.
"In the name of Father can expect as many as 14 Oscar Nominations to judge by
the campaign launched by Universal Pictures with a colour ad spread over pages
2 and 3 of Variety this week. Universal is promoting the film in the following
categories - best picture, director, actor, supporting actor, supporting
actress, screenplay, score, cinematography, film editing, art direction, costume
design, make-up, sound effects editing and sound - but not, oddly enough, for
the original songs in the film."

"The Snapper", for those of you who hadn't heard of it, is part II of

environs have been changed from the first film.

| Q: Where in Ireland was the movie "The Quiet Man" filmed? Several
members of my family are planning a trip to Ireland this year and
we would like to visit some of the places where it was made. E.S.
Chelmsford.
A: Most of the movie was filmed in the villages of Maam, in the
Connemara region of County Galway, and Cong, in neighboring County
Mayo, and in the hills and valleys in the 15 miles between them. The
rousing Irish comedy starred John Wayne, Maureen O'Hara, Barry
FitzGerald, Victor McLaglen and Ward Bond. John Ford won an Oscar in
1952 for his direction. Visitors can tour a reproduction of the
thatched cottage used in the movie at the crossroads in Maam Cross,
about 30 miles nortwest of Galway on the Clifden Road.

Yes, well, did you ever notice that when Wayne gets off the train on
the right hand side, walks through the station and rides off with Barry
Fitzgerald they are seen going from right to left towards the tracks
with the station in the background and the train coming towards them?
How'd they turn the train around so fast?

| I've been to "Maam Cross" (the fake town, consisting of nothing but the
cottage reproduction and a very much trap tourist restaurant, always
surrounded by tour buses) and it just isn't worth the trip. If you
happen to be going that way, and you're hungry at that point on your
journey, so that you happen to go in to Peacock's (the tourist trap
restaurant), then I guess it is worth five minutes to peer in to the
reproduction of the cottage. Otherwise spend your time on the much
more beautiful and interesting Connemara that surrounds it!

Episode 4, last week was about Rosemary (verrryy sexually active, and
thus kicked out of the school).
Funny that they used the same terms we did when referring to the nuns
(ours where the Grey Nuns of Canada), that is, "penguins" and "crows".
My brother (a priest with the Order of Mary Immaculate, also known as

| A made-for-TV movie entitled "You, Me and Marley" was broadcast here in
Ontario last Friday (27 January 1995).
It takes place in West Belfast in 1992.
Essentially, it's about a group of teenagers who insist on joyriding
in spite of the opposing efforts to stop them from the IRA and the RUC.
Excellent...so good I taped it.
For some, it might be depressing and violent...'Viewer Discretion
Advised'. For others, they may have trouble with the accent, which is
a pity for them as there are some great lines:
e.g. "Fatso, yer so large ya won't fit in the Chunnel"
"I'll kick yer arse so hard ya'll be picking yer teeth outa yer
shyte"
Bronagh Gallagher ( of The Commitments fame) and Tony Doyle (from
Inside the Line as Inspector Deakin) have principal roles.
Anyone else seen this?

One thing I find interesting is when watching the news on

Dat's Newfie talk, der by (translation: That's Newfoundland-ese, there
boy).
Definitely, it is the Irish influence as the majority of
Newfoundlanders are of Irish descent.
A good group to listen to, and funny at that too, is Buddy Wasisname

appears Irish (but really, it's Newfoundland).

BROKEN HARVEST
Seventy years of Irish history are dramatized as the film traces the
course of a bitter and violent feud between two neighbors.
Jimmy O'Leary, in his modern New York apartment, is told of the death
of his mother Catherine. The news spirits him back to Ireland of his
childhood.
Thirty years earlier JimmY's father, Arthur OLeary, and his neighbor,
Josie McCarthy, had fought side by side in the Irish War of
Independence, but took opposing sides in the War that followed. They
had fought also for the love of the same woman, Jimmys mother,
Catherine.
A minor deception by the young Jimmy was enough to reopen the hatred
between his father and Josie, to reawaken the fierce passions that
simmer beneath the surface. The eruption that follows threatens the
stability of the whole community, the very fabric of their lives.
Filmed in West Cork.
