| One dealer had these at a show in Chelmsford tonight. Dealers all
bought a box and broke them open. 310 cards/set.
1) Cards 1A-20 are glossy, Scouting Report type cards of Rookies.
2) Chamberlain Heroes. I bought 3 packs, got 2 Heroes. Go figure.
3) Apparently there's a West "Scouting report" subset, "Hard to get"
20 cards, 7 of 20 are Jordan or Magic, according to 1 dealer.

| Picked up a box for 32$ last night. Haven't sorted them yet, but I got
5 Chamberlains (nice job on these) including the cover card, 6 of the
"Jerry West Selects" cards, 1 hologram (AW3 Rodman) and 2 of the 1A
cards. The 1A cards you send in with a SASE and they'll send you a
card of the Shaq. I also got a 32A (Magic) and 33A (Bird). Not sure if
this means there's a regular 32 and 33 cards.
Definitely a nice set though.

money and just let you buy for us, I'm continually amazed at your
good luck. I bought 3 packs last night, not an insert in one of them.
I agree that UD has (once again) done a real nice job, I really like
the black background Chamberlain heroes, cover included.
There are also 2 SPs, one called "Bird Retires", the other
"Magic Returns" (not!). I saw the Bird, nice looking, front
has Larry in warmups, waving, inset at the bottom is a small newspaper
with headline announcing "Bird Retires".

| If anyone knows of any dealers seeing a box from $32 - $35
range can you post it. I tryied some dealers yesterday in Worcester
and none of them wanted to sell me a box. One dealer to me they are
very hot and he sold 3 boxes today. I saw him buy 3 addtional
boxes from a guy at $33 ea but he wouldn't let one go for $35, I guess
if he can get $1.50 a pack why sell the box.
I picked up 5 packs and got 2 of the send a way cards and two
Alonzo Mourning Rookie cards, no heros , no holograms.

This is what they refer to as hobby wax vs. retail wax. The hobby
wax came out first and had the West Select inserts. The retail wax is
now showing up with the All Rookie Team inserts. The packs have a red
stripe across the top.
And don't forget this is just series 1! UD will drown us in 92-93
Basketball by the time they are done, another nice UD product
ruined by over-production. Two types of wax boxes, lockers with
4 Jumbo packs, regular Jumbos, and that's just series 1. There
are something like 5 different insert sets, but all with the same
series 1 cards, enough is enough!

Walt, it might be worth sending all 5 cards since they have an

it safe. It does require a business size envelope, so I'm guessing they
have a large cardboard sleeve to put the card in or something.

Do you plan to open any packs/boxes of UD Basketball series 2? If so
then you're likely to pull the same Shaq card. If you aren't
going to open any series 2 and just want the Shaq card, I think $10
is a bit much but probably in line with retail/high Beckett will be.
If you want the card and will enjoy getting it now, go for it, else

before they start mailing out the 1B cards, I'd say it's card #1.
I'm sure 1B will probably be available in lesser than quantities
since some people hung onto to the "Trade" cards. I'm sure the #1

of that price was due to the early hype and rumors of only one per

set. Lots of subsets (In Your Face, All-Star, Slam Dunk (the
Miner card is stamped Champion already), Fanimation subset, Top
Rookie Prospects). I got most of the big name prospects including
Shaq, Miner, Mourning, Laettner etc. I also got an SP2 which is a
double sided card of Jordan and Wilkins scoring 20,000 pts. and a

508.47 | fyi | DDIF::TANCILL | Well, hello Mr. Soul | Tue Apr 13 1993 04:28 | 50 |
|
I'm rippin' some packs as I write this. I'm getting 9 high #'s per
pack and so far doing pretty good with Bird Heroes (5 so far of
of 20 packs!)
Random thoughts:
I have hit 1 Shaq #1 (it's plain #1 no 1a/1b). I don't
know this with any certainty but I believe UD may intentionally only
be putting in an average of 1 Shaq RC (plain #1) per box. So far I
know of one other person who opened 2 boxes, he got only 1 Shaq #1
in the two boxes. It makes sense as a marketing ploy and avoids
them getting the rap for essentially double printing the Shaq card.
If you only get one per box (if you're lucky) and Dr Jim labels
this plain #1 as the "RC", then UD has some hype with which to move
what we all know will be a ton of high number basketball. With the mix
of high/low they will kill the low series by the time they are thru
with hooby & retail high wax, high lockers & jumbos. I hate the
high/low mix.
I would think the retail wax, when it comes out, will overshadow the
hobby wax since the retail wax has a Shaq insert. Who will care about
the 15,000 point club (insert in the hobby wax) when you can get the
same box of cards with a chance at a Shaq insert.
Lockers also have a Shaq insert only available in the lockers. I can't
wait to see what store owners and other dealers will be trying to get
a piece for high lockers. Lows retailed from stores for around
$15-$16, I can see high lockers being hyped to $25+/each. I hope I'm
wrong.
For you unethical types (not that there are any reading this notes
file), the inserts in high number UD basketball are UV coated and
slip fairly well. In experimenting with my box, I was able to detect
the presence of inserts before opening the packs. Kinda of like
Fleer Jumbos and the rookie sensations, although the UDs are a bit
tighter. I'm not advocating you do this to pick good packs, but rather
give you this information to protect you against the slimy dealer
(sorry mike k., certainly nothin' personal) who may be doing this.
If you see a guy @ a show selling 3/4 of a box for much less than
everyone else, buyer beware. As always best to buy/pick from a
frsh, just opened box or from a dealer you trust.
Oh yeah, I paid $57 for the box on a splurge, 'cause I needed a fix,
the dealer kept telling me what a great price that was. ALthough
with the amount of inserts I'm hitting, maybe he'll be right!

A decent box (one might even say "loaded"!):
7 Bird Heroes (all different numbers, thank you!)
Bird Hero Cover (found on the eigth level with about 5 packs to go)
4 15,000 point club PC inserts
1 AW9 Jordan Holo
1 #1 Shaq
2 #32 Jim Jackson
1 #33 D Christie (I may have these two numbers reversed)
2 Fanimation cards (I think there are 5 fanimation cards in all,
the last 5 cards in the set, I don't have the
checklist handy but it's something like 506-510
are the fanimations)
Also, I think I got 3 Shaq top prospects and 2 Shaq all-star regular
cards.
Started sorting, haven't finished yet but I don't have anywhere
near a high number set, I know I'm missing 3 or so fanimations plus
several of the NBA Jam session cards, missing a few top prospects, etc.
I guess UD thinks collectors won't mind the low number cards being
in the packs because you can get 3 new cards in those low numbers (#1,
32 & 33). So it makes it something to carefully look at your low
numbers for.
I still hate the high/low mix. But a very niiiice box insert wise,
did I get lucky or will this kind of insert tally be commonplace?
I'd be interested to know what anyone else hears or experiences
opening a box.
Overall the cards are very nice, building on a real nice low series.
I could do without their multi-packaging/multi-insert/over production
of low number cards, but I still give the cards 4 1/2 sticks out of
5 on the John St. Onge memorial Gum-O-Meter (trademark and patent
pending).

Got my inserts sets mixed up. Saw the high number lockers today ($20),
they have the ten card "Foreign Exchange" subset featuring players
born outside the US of A. So I'm assuming it's the Jumbos along with
the retail wax that have Shaq in their insert sets. I think these
high lockers will come down in price over time, I mean they are really
stretching for a subset theme with this one.
