| A tip of the cap to our mod. It's unbelievable to me that guys like
Foxx Ruth Fisk will not (do Not) have Red Sox uniforms in their
lockers at Cooperstown. I know Evans will because he played most of
his games at Fenway. Trading Fisk is like thinking about trading
Larry or Ray Bourque or Kevin. Simply put I get p____d off.
Is it OK if I ask another Question like the base note?
Something like.....Name the three maor league managers that
1 hit 40 HR's in one season and
2 managed a team that won a world championship.

I'm going to change this note to "Trivia". Please keep it all in
this note, and I won't have a problem with it.
One of the three (answers to .13) ...
1) Davey Johnson -- 44 HR's with the Braves I blv, and managed the
'86 Champion Mets (*sob*)
I'll take a wild-stab and guess that another one was Yogi Berra.
It seems likely that at some point he hit 40+ and managed a world
champion.

Fisk was not traded. The front office did not present him with a
contract offer by midnight on the day before he was eligible to become
a free agent therefore he was able to sign with the highest bidder. One
of many Red Sox brass mistakes in the handling of players. No wonder we
are cursed fans of the Sox!!

Actually I didn't read USA/Today baseball weekly to get the answer. A
friend of mine was telling me a story of he and his friend at the
ballpark. The first base umpire was Derwood Merril but they didn't know
his first name. So my friend turned to his friend and asked him what
the first base umps first name was. His friend answered , "Al". My
friend asks him, how do you know his name is Al. Where his friend
replied, "Because that's whats written on his cap." I cracked up,
I never forgot that story and figure thats what teh answer must be.

My first response on the FB HOF question was Cal (not Carl) Hubbell,
who, if I'm not mistaken is the only member of both hall-of-fames
(football and baseball).
But, I'm also pretty sure he went into the baseball HOF as an umpire,
and not a player, but that might not disclude him from having played
at some point.
Right/Wrong Mike?

Yes Mike. I realize that. But I was trying to make a link between
the "football HOF" portion of the question, and the fact this person
also played in a "major league game".
Someone in both HOF's is a very likely candidate, so I started from
there.
Let me ask you to clarify the question a little bit.
By a "major league game", do you mean REGULAR SEASON GAME, or do
oddball things like spring-training, exhibition, etc., type games
count also?

Wel... (as Mr. Reagan would say), I'm surprised that none
of you have been able to answer Mike's trivia question,
I thought that some of you baseball "gurus" would have
come out with the answer. Here is what little me has
been able to find out...
ERNIE NEVERS'(1903-1976) only association with the baseball record
book came when he offered 2 gopher balls to Babe Ruth in
the Babe's 60 home run 1927 season. As a young pitcher
with the Browns, he compiled a 6-12 record with a 4.64 ERA
in 3 yrs. But when Nevers turned to football, he was one
of the greatest in history. He rose to stardom in the 1925
Rose Bowl when he led underdog Stanford against powerful
Notre Dame. He rushed for 114 yds. in the Bowl game, even
though he had been sidelined for most of the season with two
broken ankles. His most outstanding feat came in 1929, when
playing for the Chicago Cardinals against their cross-town
rival, the Bears, Nevers scored 40 points -a single game NFL
scoring record that has never been surpassed. Nevers was elected
to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1963.
Actually, guys, don't feel bad about what I said earlier,
because I can't claim complete credit for findind the information,
you see, yesterday, I ran into Mike Kelly, and he gave me a
tip in which direction to look for the answer.
