The one advertiser in Tuff Stuff who had these advertised, was
    pre-selling for $75/box, $1400/case.

The NBA and UD are currently battling (in court?) over whose going
to control the distribution of these. Everyone cross your fingers
that the NBA wins, for a couple of reasons:

    	- They'll be a lot more readily available, (lower prices)
    	- None of UD's normal shenanigans
    	- There will be UD BK cards (seriously, if UD wins, you think
the NBA will approve/renew their license? hardly ...)

It's going to be a 280 card first series. Unless they find a way
to make their decollation even worse, or they decrease the number
of cards/pack, you should be able to get (or very close to) a
complete set out of one box.

Knock it off guys. If someone volunteers to get this together, then
send them mail. I'm not going to have a 100 replies in here saying
    "me too me too".

I'm sure we'd all like UD Basketball, and I *KNOW* we'd like them at
    a reasonable price.

Right now, the pre-order prices I've been quoted for a case, and for
    a box, are EXTREMELY high. I'm talking $1100-$1400/case, $65-80/box.

I won't get into this, but someone a short while ago did indeed try
and put together a "Mass. noters buying power" group, but almost all
the people asked to "join" were only only willing to buy the boxes
once all the work had been done. Very few were willing to take their
turn doing the work, collecting the money, putting the cards on their
    credit card, etc.

It's a shame, because I think we could all really help each other out.

311.11Here's an ideaFRAGLE::GUTIERREZWho's on 1st.. What's on 2nd..Tue Oct 01 1991 16:4415

Here is an idea: set up a mass buyers group, give them numbers as
they join. Once you have the sufficient number of people, the first
one in the list buys the case the first time, the 2nd. down the
list the 2nd time, and so on...

    	Establish some rules, for example:
once you join, you make a commitment to continue and take your
place in the ordering process, if you back down later on, then
you will not be allowed to join anymore.

This is just my idea, if anyone has any other suggestions, or a
better idea, I would like to hear it.

I called BIG BOB'S Yesterday,(9-30-91) and spoke with one of the
salesmen and he told me that Upperdeck was only going to make 15,000
cases because the NBA was going to control the quantity on them.He
told me if you buy under a case it will cost (69.95) low,and $75.00
for the Hi. If you buy a case this would be the breakdownon on the
    LOW & Hi series.

Hi Series 20 % lower than the Low Series.

    Low Series $1295.00 p/case,24 boxes p/case $54.50 per box
    Hi Series $1495.00 " " " $62.80 per box

Shipping is included in the price. I will be willing to buy the low
series at this time,I have to have a money order in by 7 days.

Orders have to be in ASAP 7 days from now or the price will go up,
as of now I'm locked in at this price.

I have to agree with John. I may look foolish for not paying $50+, but I
can't believe it will stay that high. The case only costs them 1/3rd of that
at most.

I'll pass at that price. If someone comes up with a more reasonable price, I'm
interested. I know someone on the outside also looking at cases.

311.28Upper Deck Promo's ReleasedDNEAST::WOODMAN_MIKEFri Oct 25 1991 23:267
Saw UD's promo sheets this weekend, they look really nice. They are
going to produce them in the same Low/High numbers deal as all other UD
cards. Talked to my Dealer who said he is going to sell them at $60 a
box, which is too rich for me. Guess I'll have to wait and see if they
produce them in a set. They are going to be quite limited in
production, because the NBA is controlling how many cards will be
released. Too bad the NBA couldn't control the price of them too.
311.29CERBUS::KARLSONOnly 60 shopping days until Xmas!Sat Oct 26 1991 10:0317
The NBA has the same licensing agreement with UD that they do with
    all the other card companies.

Anyone who tells you UD will be limited, is exaggerating. I won't
say LYING, because they will eventually, someday stop printing
them, which means they do have a finite limiting to them.

But as to limited in terms of scarcity? Bwah ha ha ha ha ha ha

We heard the same crap with UD FB which started out at $70/box,
and has recently been found as low as $19/box.

Name me ONE UD product you cannot still find on a dealer's table
at ANY show or card shop? It's all still available. UD limited?
    Hardly ...

Latest attempt to, uh, mess with the customer.

There will be 2 ways to buy these cards. 1) via the box, claimed
    to be $60-$80/box.

Something called the locker room or something like that. Come's
in a box that looks like a locker. Holds 400 cards, comes with 7
packs of cards a "special" Michael (Mr. Spokesman) card and a set
of rookie stars not found in regular cards. 6 or 7 different Jordan
    cards, 1 per locker set.

311.31UD commemorative LA Lakers setPHAROS::MATOSFri Nov 01 1991 13:1712
I went the a dealer yesterday and he had a pack of UD basketball
cards from the L.A Lakers for commemorating the pre-season games
they playied in Paris. The set was sealed in a see thu plastic with
a hologram on the other side of a basketball and Paris written on
and and a sheet commemorating the event.
He wouldn't give me a price wasn't sure what they were worth and he
didn't want to let them go at a low price when maybe, they could be
worth a lot of money, And of course they're "VERY LIMITED" like
    everything else.

311.32I saw them too.TOLKIN::CHOYFri Nov 01 1991 16:3214
I saw these same promos at a shop Wednesday and asked them how much
they were. They too were hesitant to quote a price. I have a feeling,
Miguel, we went to the same shop since I know you go to this particular
shop. Anyway, they said that it would be probably around $50 but want
to wait so that they don't sell it too cheap. $50 is a pretty good
margin for something free. They said they might wait to see if it is
priced in Tuff Stuff. I'm sure they'll consult SCD or that Sportsnet
thing. Guess some dealers can't think for themselves.

Called a friend who got them. Turns out he went to a show as a
customer and sold the cards to a dealer and went out to dinner with the
proceeds. He gave the sheet to his brother. Oh well.

break they showed cards, first one was HOOPS, then the next break
SKYBOX and, on there 3rd break to my surprise they should UPPERDeck
Basketball cards looked pretty nice on tv. I guess Fleer can't
    afford to advertise.

On the that special set of the Lakers I talked about it to another
dealer in Worcester and, all the Dealers got them thu the mail with
the certificate as a promo and they did the same with there hockey
    when it came out.
So Lance your right $50 is too much, maybe $15 would be better if
    we can find it.

    Other UD BK news ...

Most ads in SCD now have the cards down to $33-40/box -- including
the "Magazine Exchange" -- my unofficial metric of card pricing.
They invariably charge TOO much for everything, so whatever they
have as a price, I consider an upper limit of initial pricing. Their
latest ad had them for $34.95 a box.

Oh, and lest anyone buy into the "but the NBA is limiting them to
the ''amount they can produce''" scarcity line, about 50% of the
ads in SCD have them listed. Scarce my ars.

311.39100% MARKUP OR MORE!!!DNEAST::WOODMAN_MIKEWed Dec 11 1991 21:328
Don't get sucked in at $2.50 a pack. I talked to my dealer today, who
ordered 3 cases direct from the factory, and he is paying $576 a case,
which figures out to $24 a box. He said he is going to set his prices
at $50, maybe higher depending on what the other dealers in town are
selling them for. I figure within a month or two, the prices will have
dropped into the $30 range. I just don't think that the dealer should
have a markup of over 100% for any cards.
Don't get sucked in by the hype and high prices!

The only WAX I've seen out is some high priced stuff that a few
dealers got to have it before the general shipment started. This is
all $2.50/pack stuff people are seeing, $75/box. It almost like they
leaked some "promo" type cases out a little early, probably on the
    west coast.

According to one dealer up here UD shipped his order this past Monday,
which he says means he will have it by this coming monday. I would
guess the potential is there for UD basketball to be around at shows this
weekend. It may stay high for one weekend ($40-$50 or more per box)
but even by next week I think it will be all over the place in the 30s.
From there if you are even a little patient it should follow the hockey
and football into the mid to high 20s per box. Pre-orders could be had
for $30/box, less in some areas of the country, so the going price
ought to be about the same as hockey, maybe a little more than football.

With all the competition out there these days, high prices might
not even last thru the first weekend, given that the huge Andover
show is this weekend. If there are at least several dealers at
Andover with UD basketball watch it fall from friday to sunday as
    they jockey to move product.

I may turn out to be a bit optimistic in the last reply, one tidbit I
heard from a dealer today is that apparently the cash is flowing out
of some current products (TSC hockey in particular) and into others
(UD Basketball in particular). This fits with what seems to be
happening to TSC hockey, a rapid drop as dealers unload to buy other
products, one they are buying is UD basketball at $1000/case!
($41.67/box). So dealers may try and hold prices up for awhile on
UD basketball, but the fatcory costs and production are around the
same as for football and hockey, so don't buy it high, make 'em sweat!
(bj's will get it in a few weeks for $19/box, etc. same as hockey)

I opened a box last night, these cards are sharp!

My favorite cards so far are the Shawn Kemp and Dominique Wilkens,
    both great dunk shots.

    I'm sure I'm well short of a set; I didn't get a Jordon or a Magic
or a Kenny Anderson, but I did get duplicates of Robinson, Bird, and
    Motumbo (anyone want to trade?)

I'm disapointed in the draft cards, most are in suits, some are in
their new uniforms, but no actions shots. I really like the UD football
draft cards, great pictures of the players from college, and I was
    hoping Basketball would be similar.

I got four holograms (3 stoctons, and 1 A. Robertson), these don't do
    much for me.

    What's left for series II?

The owner said we went through 72 boxes in 8 days. He was really
    happy with the products.

Anyway, Does anyone have any details on the set? My son got one
Jordan Holo (AW1) and 3 Robertsons (AW2)? Are there other Hologram
cards in the set? I've heard that there are 400 cards in this set. Is
that true? Will there be a High Number set? Any details would be
    appreciated.

Yes, 400 cards in the first series. Pretty sure there will be a
second series. Rookies in their new uniforms, trades, signings,
    etc., all represented there.

There are three initial holograns; Michael Jordan, Alvin
Robertson, and John Stockton. These seem to be taking the course
of the hockey cards; award winners.

in our cluster was EVETPU:: now renamed to DTIF:: a few months ago,
cerbus:: needs a node db update.

To avoid completely wasting this reply, I want to ask if anyone has
heard about heroes for the UD basketball. There is no "Find the ..."
on the packs, apparently there are no heroes in the low number wax.
I had thought someone mentioned Larry Bird awhile back, then also a
dealer told me Michael "I want to be like Mike" Jordan had signed
on as spokeperson for UD basketball.

It took a week longer than I had originally hypothosized but
UD Bball was all over for $30/box at a show today and it was
moving briskly at that price. Dead at $32/box, $30 was the magic
number. Funny thing, I know one local shop dealer who is lining
up people for the 2nd part of his shipment due this week @ $40/box!
People are evidently clammering to get it at $40 before xmas... they
should get out to a show once in awhile. The 20s are next, with
grand prize probably at one of these amazing wharehouse joints,
$19/box for Bball would be a nice buy...

Can one of you wharehouse hounds pick me up a box? :-)

Looking through the checklists, I now know why I didn't get a Kenny
Anderson, there isn't one. Looks like they only made cards of draft
picks that had signed at press time. I'm sure the rest of the late
signees will be in series II.

I don't think there is a Rick Fox card though, and he was one of the
    first to sign.

I noticed another great photo on the back of the spud webb card is
a picture of him next to James Edwards who is about 3 times as big as
    spud (like the grinch's heart...)

311.60replacement ability/supply will determine priceDDIF::TANCILLlong may you runFri Dec 27 1991 23:0023

If you can't wait much longer, $30 ain't bad for this point in time.
Your tipoff (sorry) to the quantity of UD basketball is to see how much
further and how quickly boxes break in the $20s. If there is a ton
to be had, dealers will be cutting sales at whatever it takes to move
boxes, if they hold at $30 and not many are cutting deals at below $30,
the current replacement availability may not be great. But patience
with UD will always yield you a cheaper box then you could have
gotten a week ago (or at least no more exspensive). Hockey seems
to have leveled off at $25-$28, but it's not as if you can't
find all you want, probably at less if you want alot. Toys r us
just got their UD hockey, $27.55 a box all you want, that ought to
push show retail prices towards $25 or better. I don't see anything
that says the basketball won't be the same, even if the price levels
off at retail show $30/box for now, watch it when there are several more
'92 baseballs and 2nd series basketballs out.

There are so many products and so much competition to sell them that
it is really a buyer's market big time and UD doesn't limit anything
    it prints.

Ok, now I see that prices came down fast to $30 because dealers are

I don't know if they hit the mass area yet, but I have noticed
them in the RI area. I could have picked a box up for $65 yesterday.

They have one "Rookie Standout" in each pack and there are 20 packs
in a box. 27 cards per pack, for a total of 540 cards per Jumbo box.
Which works out to an average of .12 cents per card. I think the boxes
are still priced to high. The dealer I saw that had them was selling
single pack for $4. I saw the RS sets selling for $45 in SCD. So if
they hold that price, then maybe $65 for a box isn't bad.

I'm waiting another couple weeks. But I do think if your going to
save these cards the only way to go is the Jumbo box. Else you have
to go out and buy these 20 Rookie Standouts if you what them. And

Excellent! It is highway robbery to see $1.98 right on the pack
and yet the dealer is asking $3.25-$3.75. The jumbos are only in
the hands of the wholesalers, who are jacking up the box price
to regular dealers. But when they do distribute them to some
the stores/gas stations, those folks will sell them at SRP.

The price from UD to the wholesalers is $20/box, it is a shame that
100% profit isn't enough for some of these guys, but the argument goes
that these same whoelsalers also get stuck with alot of crap, so when
they get something "hot" like UD jumbos, they gouge for what they
can get to make up for the rest of the junk.

2$/RS cards is the cheapest you'll find them (right now). 40$/set
is still high, buying singles for 2$ I can see, but the set should
	be selling for $30 top!

I've seen the Dee Brown card going for 7$, Coleman must be up there
two. But besides these two guys who else is a big name player? Dee
Brown hasn't even played 30sec of basketball this year and his cards
	are climbing.. Figure it out.

I was able to buy 17 of the 20 card set from one dealers who had many
RS cards, but couldn't put anymore set together. 25$ for the 17 cards
I thought was a good price. All I have to do now is find Brown,Coleman

I have the list of RS's. I'll post them in this topic tonight when I

    Agreed.

I enjoy collecting this stuff, I have a problem with the high prices
and alleged scarcity of the cards. When the silver slugger s came came
out the where hot hot. A freind tried to sell a set he put together a
while back, he may as well as been selling mood rings. The dealers
really wanted them bad. NOT! They sit in the display cases in South
Carolina and are colder than the Gamecocks. (for those of you not in
the know, they are commonly known as the lamecocks for their excellence
    in sports)

Anyway, is this stuff more of the same? I would be willing to
bet that Silver Sluggers can be had cheap. Come on really, how many
scarce inserts can a collector take? For me the novelty has worn off.

As Dennis and walt were mentioning the 'Here's what I found.."
note, the locker boxes are the way to go if you want to collect the
rookie standouts. 7 standouts, 1 per pack, plus the box holds the
400 card set rather nicely. At show's this weekend dealers were
trying to get $14 and $16 for a locker box, however a local store
here in southern nh is doing quite a business in them at $12 (tax
free!). Awhile ago I was able to pre-order one from a store in
maryland for $9.95, so my guess is that dealer cost is somewhere
around $7-$8 (maybe?). Not a bad deal at $12 (or less) and you don't
get as many extras cards that you might not need as with the jumbos.

Jumbos should fall in price, anybody reasonably local who wants a locker
for $12, send mail I'll pick them up while the guy still has some.

talked dealers who already have them, so they must be out there. Have
heard that the dealers are paying $22 factory direct, so don't get
tricked into paying $40-50 a box.

I got 2 boxes of Hi #'s today. There is 100 cards in the 2nd series,
#401-500. They include traded players, this years All-Stars and
Slam-dunk competitors. It also has top prospects, like Owens, Fox,
Mutombo, Anderson, ETC. I got mine for $28 a box, but most dealers at
the show wanted $50-55. Also included West Hero's, I only got 3 in the
    1st box.

311.110No complete set, but who would expect one from UD.DNEAST::WOODMAN_MIKEMon Apr 20 1992 19:135
I am about 16 cards short of a set, of course I expected as much from
UD. 4 highs per pack in the box I opened. I got the last 3 holo's,
(Olajawon, Coleman, and Rodman.) Only one store in town has them, and
they are asking $1.25 a pack, $42 a box, and they only had 3 boxes. I
expect they will be everywhere by this weekend.

I bought a box over the weekend (40$), pretty much 4 highs per pack; I did
well on the rookies (2 or 3 of all the big names), ok on the holos
(6 in the box), but struck out on West Heros (not a one!)

As with series I, the cards are real nice; great shot of Motombo
dunking on his card, lots of other great photography. I don't see the
need for more all-star cards, now the upper deck set features all
star cards from both this years game and last years game!

One dealer told me that there will be High Number Locker Boxes out
in the next week or so, followed by more jumbos. He wasn't sure
on what inserts would be where; anyone hear specifices on that?

all this for 100 more cards!? Looking back, it looks like the smart
thing to do would have been to just wait for the high number boxes
and not even bother with the low number specific boxes. If only I
had any patience when it comes to basketball cards...

With UD, the smart thing to do is wait for factory sets, and pick
up the auxillary cards (if they interest you) as they appear (well,
after they've settled down to a reasonable price).

high number lockers are out. As mentioned, 20 new RS cards, I think
they're all this year's rookies, numbered 21-40; same boxes as series I,
one RS per pack. packs may also contain Jerry West cards and/or Holos.
So, these packs have everything that you can get in the high number wax
    plus the new RS cards.

If anyone has a complete checklist, please post it here; So far, I
know of Augmon, Fox, Alexander, Macon, Brandon, Johnson, and the I*z*o
guy from the Mavs (whatever his name is).

Upper Deck doesn't seen too concerned about the consistancy of this
set -- the RS cards now contain this years rookies and last years
rookies, they could have at least renamed them...

311.114West Autographs I have seen two.DNEAST::WOODMAN_MIKESat May 02 1992 00:066
I have seen two West Autographs pulled out a a shipper at my dealers.
They were both found yesterday, one by a customer and one by the
dealer. He said he would sell his for $600. One was numbered 442 out
of 2500, the other 445 out of 2500, which kind of makes me if there
might be 2 more in the shipper. I tried my luck on ten packs, but no
luck, he is asking $1 a pack.

What does anyone see West hero sets for these days? Have they
begun to drop off yet? The July Beckett says 30-45, when I
was paying attention a few months back most dealers seem to
    want $50 or more.

American Liquidators is offering them for $39.95. Anyone seen
    them for less?

Nope, $39.95 is the lowest Jeff (American Liquidators). The
lowest I personally saw @ shows was $45 (same dealer wanted
$25 for the header and $4 for singles, so go figure).

You're definitely much better off buying the set than building
singles. Not only will it be (much) cheaper, it will be (much)
easier. Either the dealers are hoarding them really well, or
there just aren't all that many out there.
