the UpperDeck Hockey today and is selling them for $ 1.25 a pack.

218.2 | $1.50 @ Hudmar... | AISG::DRAGER | Roboco-op II - The Final Days... | Thu Dec 13 1990 15:55 | 18 |
|
Hudmar in Marlboro has UD Hockey @ $1.50 a pack, limit 2 packs per
customer. I told the owner that I'd much rather he set a limit on the
number of packs a person can buy rather than jack the price up to $2.50.
He agreed.
I picked up a couple of packs; they're nice. Typical UD. Similar
to the baseball issues (same 'painted' team checklists, #1 draft & all-
rookie team subsets). Interesting to note that the small hologram on the
back of the card is an oval (hockey rink) rather than a circle.
Out of the 2 packs I got a Neely, Roy and a Gretzky Hologram. My
brother tells me that the hologram has been going for $100 in Philly,
but I'm just assuming this card to be another Borque error rather than
a Lombardi Trophy.

218.3 | Wayne Gretzky holograms | FRAGLE::GUTIERREZ | | Mon Dec 17 1990 13:54 | 15 |

Ref: 218.2
About the Wayne Gretzky Hologram cards, a dealer had all 3 of them
for sale on a display glass case for $10 for the set of 3 different
ones. I looked at them, and it was hard to see the details in the
cards, I was not impressed with these particular holograms.
I also went to a card show yesterday, and saw the wax boxes being
sold for $35.00 a piece, while others had them for as high as $50.

218.5 | Wayne Gretzky holograms = real bad | FRAGLE::GUTIERREZ | | Fri Dec 21 1990 12:49 | 9 |
|
I went to the dealer in Framingham who was selling the 3 Wayne Gretzky
Upper Deck Holograms for $10.00 for all 3, and he has marked down
the price to $5.00 for the set. I asked him to let me take a closer
look at them, and even on closer inspection, I couldn't tell whose
picture was in them, it was very fuzzy. Upper Deck has done a
horrible job on these holograms, they are real bad, and I wouldn't
want to buy them even if they were $1.00 a piece, unless there was
a real strong demand for them, and only then, for investment reasons.

For anyone who is still interested in these cards, BJ's in Westboro,
Mass. is selling these boxes shrink wrapped in clear plastic for
$20 a box. This is not a misprint, I bought one today for that price;
however, there were not that many left, maybe a case and a half.

Does anyone know how many superstars are in these holograms?
So far I've seen (2) Gretzky, (2) Yzerman...he's being shadowed by
a St. Louis player in one of them, and (1) Messier.
Also, before you pass judgement on these holograms take them outside
in the bright sunlight and give them another look. The clarity is 10
times better and the colors more readily apparent. Flourescent lighting
just doesn't cut it with these.
Plus, has anyone heard of any error cards in this Upper Deck
series. I haven't myself, but I can't believe that all 400 cards
would be error free. It could just be that I'm used to Pro-Set which
nearly have more error cards than correct ones.

Concering Upper Deck Hockey.....I noticed that the set
has 400 cards in it. However, Score started the Xtended

is planning the same.
I'd like to purchase a Factory set but would rather wait
for a complete one if they are going to issue the Xtended
set.

I didn't think Upper Deck sold Factory sets... Is there something you know
that we don't?
As for as I know (for hockey), only Topps, Bowman, and Score sell factory
sets. Upper Deck and Pro-Set do not. (I don't know about OPC, but since
they're made by Topps they probably do.)

I dealer in Derry, NH told me today over the phone that he has heard an
unconfirmed rumor that ProSet has bought UpperDeck. He said the speculation
based on this is that 90-91 UpperDeck Hockey is the first and would be the
last Hockey made by UpperDeck (since ProSet makes Hockey also). FWIW.
Even if this is true, I'm not so sure ProSet wouldn't put out two hockey
sets under different names (from same company).
Anyone else hear anything regarding this?

| Here in Massachusetts ...
I bought one of each from a dealer for $1 each, and the only
reason I bought is because they were only $1 each. I still
don't like the way they look. As Holograms go, they are very
poor, and if I was the producer, I would be ashamed to call
these things Holograms. Someone suggested to look at them in
the sunlight, I did that, and there are shades of colors you
can see, and in one of the Holograms you can see Gretzky
taking a slapshot. I also have other Holograms from DC MARVEL
comics, and Looney Tunes, and when you compare them to the
Upper Deck Holograms, it's like comparing night and day (a little
exaggeration here, to drive a point ).

I agree, but what's a collector to do when you have the first 400?
There are some nice cards/subsets in the high 150, overall I think UD
did a real nice job on these cards, too bad the hobby is getting for
the upper middle class/rich. With three sons (and me!) I will soon
be heading for a home equity loan ;-)

| Are those holograms worth anything? My daughter sticks them on the

can't even tell who's in it but I do see 2 players when it's at the
right angle.

When they are first available, the dealers go overboard, and charge
$2-$3 for them, but after a while, they become plentiful, and I have
seen at the card shows for as low as $0.75.
I know nobody asked me, but as Holograms go, these are the worst
I have ever seen. You really have to move them into the right
angle and position, and have the right amount of light to be able
to see who's in it (who's on first, we're talking about hockey
here, not baseball), and even then, you can't really tell, and
have to use your imagination.
I love Holograms, and as Holograms go, these are a disgrace.

I gotta disagree. Yes, they are very difficult to see at first, but
when you catch on it's not too bad...and when you do catch it just right
it's very good.
BTW - these are not "holograms" - but rather 'stereograms'. Unlike holograms
that just show depth, these also show lots of 'motiion' when you tilt them
back and forth...

guess kids are good for something (only joking).

Actually, there is a way to view these holograms (stereograms) most
effectively:
Put it on a table in any room in your house at night, preferably tilted
at a 47 degree angle. Starting at about 7 inches away, slowly walk
backward, keeping one eye closed and the other focused on the card.
Keep walking backward until you read the door. Reach up, turn out the
light and leave the room.

Does anyone have a list of what the 9 (there are 9, correct?)
different holograms are?
My brother-in-law bought a hand-collated set early in the run,
and thought he was getting all the holograms, but since "all the
holograms" (at the time) was 3, he's missing 6.
I believe there are ...
o 3 different Gretzky
o 2 different Yzerman
o at least one Brett Hull (dealer told me this weekend it's

O he picked up a NY Islander this weekend (LaFontaine?)

Well, for anyone whose interested, the 12-20 (Clemens) or 12-27
(Lindros) issue of SCD had an interview with Big Bob Amato, the
owner of Big Bob's cards.
Why is this in the 1990-91 UD Hockey note?
Because it details in there how he was able to acquire over HALF
of the available 1990-91 French UD Hockey through a disreputable
magazine wholesaler in Canada.
Sooner or later, the federal government, or worse yet the IRS, is
going to cast a VERY strong eye on the dealings within this "hobby".
Currently some of the bigger dealers realize this and are trying
to police themselves with dealer associations, but it won't be long
before someone gets in deep trouble over some of the shadier aspects
of this hobby.
I wish I was a lawyer, I bet I could have a field-day with class
action suits. "Scarce? Prove it. Misleading advertising practices.
Settle out of court". "You won't provide production numbers. Watch
me get 'em through the court system".

Ayuh, the POTM cards are down to ~$35/set as are CC1-CC4 (including
the oh so rare and special CC3 and CC4).
The Fridge error from '89 PS FB is down to $8-10 bucks, ditto the
Dickerson #338 card, and Risien #75.
Haven't bothered to look up old f**k face lately, but I'm sure he's
plummeting also.
And PS FB (series I) will be down to a reasonable soon. The cases
are still sitting virtually untouched at BJ's (@ $20.98 a box),
and I don't think anyone's bought a PACK from the local TRU.
Just about everything drops eventually. That which doesn't can
likely be lived w/out.
