I hate it when they don't have their items priced, and they have
to look up the price for every card your interested in.

| I would definitely would agree with Tony a couple of replies back
when he says you should try to "talk the dealer" down on price.
My brother is a collector/dealer (small time) and he tries to undercut
the "regular" dealers to begin with, and then he'll also talk deals.
There's no question that the dealers are trying to "move" as much
as possible. Their profits are directly related to how long it takes
them to move their stuff.
I was never one to try to talk them down in the past, but I've seen
in the last few months how many WILL go down and it was surprising
to me.

23.6 | Mantle cards are on their way DOWN! | AKOV12::GASPARONI | | Mon Apr 23 1990 12:24 | 15 |
| I hate it when you ask a dealer a price on a stack of unpriced cards or
odd ball junk. He will say, $1 a piece, and $4 for the Mantle cards.
Hey, what is it with Mantle stuff? If Mantle's picture is on it, its
more money. I'm glad his cards and memorabilia is leveling off. There
is no reason why his stuff should be 5 times as much as other players.
A recent BCN article has stated, that the Mantle era is over for now,
and collectors who were after his cards have all but bought everything
they need to complete their collections. Prices should drop and
stabilize but the appreciation will not be there for the near future,
except for the rookie cards. I think its good news, and the dealers
who have been holding their prices high and firm can rot with them as
far as I'm concerned. At least the dealers I have come in contact
with that sell Mantle Memorabilia, they have been rude, arrogant, and
have for the most part kept their prices well above book, like its
card board gold.

I don't understand the attraction to Mantle memoribilia either, except
to brush it off as 'NYC effects'. While Mantle was no stiff, he is
easily the most overrated player in the history of baseball.

I agree that Mickey Mantle was the most overrated player in the
history of Baseball. He had lots of potential but he also had
a serious problem with alcohol. If he didn't play hung over so much
he could have fullfilled his potential. Oh well, I guess he just
enjoyed drinking more then playing Baseball. I just laugh when
people mention his name with the all-time greats like Ty Cobb,
Babe Ruth, Pete Rose etc...

| Now you boys shouldn't be talking about my boyhood hero like that.
Mickey for one thing always paid his taxes, and doesn't have 6 wives,
and a half dozen kids he doesn't even know about, and doesn't hang out
at the local horse track, or bookey bar. So he liked to tie a few on
every once in a while with his buddies Whitey, and Billy. His cards
may be overpriced, but his playing was NOT! I would have liked to see
the man with a good pair of wheels, he might have surpassed Babes all-
time HR record. Remember, he accomplished what he did in 18 seasons,
the first year was a partial year, and with all his walks and injuries,
I think he did a Hell of job, and was a credit to the game, unlike some
other ballplayer who recently has not only hurt the game and its
integerity, but has ruined his chances of ever getting into the HOF,
and rightfully so. There is more to getting into the HOF than getting
4000 hits my friends, and I can't wait to see this Jack___ get his DUE.
As for calling Mickey Mantle a drunk, Roy that reply should be taken
off the file immediately, if not sooner. Besides, the file is for
frustrations with dealers, and please don't move it to 40, thats for
kind words about the Mick only.

I've about had it with the B.S. going on about Rose and Mantle's
worth/value as a player. If you want to discuss the relative talents
of these players please take it to ASABET::BASEBALL. If you want to
discuss the value of their cards or other memorabilia related topics,
keep it here. But enough is enough. Does every conference that even
hints of sports have to be inundated with Bull on the Rose situation.
Hey it was a year ago. It's old hat! Who really gives a shit!! I
don't.

| Roy,
Thanks for the support.
Rick,
It's not that I don't want to read about Rose or Mantle. I just get
tired of every conference that even hints at sports has to go into long
tirades on both sides of the issues (my side included). This
conference should stick to memorabilia. I'll leave it at that. And by
the way, my ears are too small to pack all that into.

23.20 | There is still hope | FRAGLE::GUTIERREZ | Who's on 1st.. What's on 2nd.. | Mon Jul 22 1991 13:08 | 23 |

Well, folks, I have to admit there is still hope for the dealers
at the card shows. Here is what happened to me yesterday at one
of the card shows I attended:
My son asked me to buy a box of Fleer Ultra for him, so I started
going around the different tables, looking for the lowest price.
Some dealers were selling it for $33, $32, even $30. I thought
that $30 was a pretty good price, but I still decided to check
out all the dealers before I would make a decision.
There were just 4 more to check when I got to this table
where a dealer had a box of Fleer Ultra on display, but no price
on it, so I asked him how much he was selling it for. To my
surprise, he said: "That guy over there is selling it for less
that I am, and he pointed to another table ". I went over to that
table, and sure enough, the guy was selling them for $28, the
lowest price in the show !!.
Needless to say, I was very impressed. There is still hope.

Two phrases that are really beginning to grate on my nerves at a
card show. One from each side of the table:
Dealer: "That's what I paid for it"
Patron: "It's all I've got"
