1143.1 | Not for VMS, now, but soon? | AKQJ10::YARBROUGH | I prefer Pi | Wed Oct 25 1989 12:59 | 5 |
| The VMS version of Mathematica is still a few months away, although the
ULTRIX version may be available now. In the meantime, we do have MAPLE,
for which V4.3 is coming within a few weeks.

| Offhand, I don't see why not, since it's written in C. But will WATCOM
deliver a RISC version to us? Don't know.

Doesn't say which year :-)

1143.6 | Do you suppose we will be able to get it on ENET? | GENRAL::HEINTZE | | Wed Jan 24 1990 16:46 | 7 |

internal use?
I assume that -.1 gives prices for external use.

For information on licensing issues with Mathematica, you can contact
the Digital product manager, Mary Raczkowski. She is on
ABACUS::RACZKOWSKI or at dtn 264-3753. She can tell you the price
for Digital employees as well as schedules for future releases.

Art,
I received your request for Pricing of Mathematic, and the Employees
discount.
Currently we are shipping Mathematica on all the RISC platforms, the Ultrix
version is currently on hold, and it is expected to be released shortly.
When you order the Product, you will have to order a License and then the
Documentation and Media. If you will let me know which machine you are
going to be using Mathematica on, I will be more than happy to send you
the appropriate part numbers and associated costs you can expect to be
transfered to your Cost Center.
You would have to pay the Royalty charge for the license, and the transfer
costs for the documentation and media (doc and media costs are approximately
$75.00, costs for the license depends on the cpu.
I would be more than happy to send you the current list prices and
associated Royalty charges for you to put into the NOTES files.

1143.9 | | SSDEVO::LARY | under the Big Western Sky | Wed May 30 1990 21:38 | 4 |
| The May 14 issue of Sales Update announced availability of Mathematica on
VAX/VMS systems. Prices range from $2400 on VAXstation platforms to about $70K
on a VAX 6000-460 (no VAX 9000 prices were given). Based on previous replies
to this note I'd guess that its available internally for $1200 on a VAXstation.

1143.11 | Anybody have Mathematica that I could use? | 2HOT::SWONGER | Peripheral Visionary | Fri Mar 15 1991 13:52 | 13 |

I'm interested in using Mathematica for a grad course that
I am taking - ULowell has about 2 copies running on
unerpowered machines. Is there anybody who has Mathematica
running on a machine and would be willing to let me use it?
I'm located in ZKO, so that would most convenient (either
from the standpoint of setting a display over the net or
working directly on the machine itself).
This would be strictly after-hours usage. If you can help,
please send me mail at VIA::SWONGER.

I took the course offered at WPI a couple years back and it was excellent.
Mathematica was not available at the school yet and he was forced to
use Macsyma. I think he may be using Mathematica these days.

| Do you want it for Digital or yourself? I got the IBM-PC-compatible
student version for $175 by calling Wolfram at 1-217-398-0700. (The
student version does not have coprocessor support and is packaged
differently, but is otherwise functionally identical, according to
Wolfram.)

1143.15 | mma or maple for the PC? | STAR::ABBASI | please dont delete my notes | Mon Jan 18 1993 18:15 | 8 |

Erick, how do you like the mma on the PC? i mean compared to say Maple
for the PC? any specific reasons why you got mms and not MAPLE for the PC?
since they have student edition also for MAPLE, iam getting a new PC
myself and I want to get either mma or MAPLE for it, not sure which...

1143.16 | | RUSURE::EDP | Always mount a scratch monkey. | Tue Jan 19 1993 10:40 | 32 |
| Re .15:
I got Mathematica because it's had more power longer, although Maple is
apparently catching up. It's also got a Windows interface. I can't
tell you how I like it though, because I don't have any hardware yet.
(My system should be ready next week.)
I've only read the Windows interface manual, but it gives me some
concerns. First, the interface does not understand mathematical
objects. It can import, export, and display expressions in both plain
text and formatted expression form and do the same for graphs and other
images, but it does not understand the objects well enough that it can
help you select subexpressions. E.g., you cannot navigate through
existing expressions by using cursor keys to move up or down through
levels of operators or left or right through operands. You can of
course select subexpressions by picking out the text yourself, but a
premiere math package ought to do more for you.
The interface manual also says the Mathematica kernel will die if it
runs out of space. That sounds pretty lame to me; it ought to just
give up the current work without losing existing context.
On the other hand, there's no Windows interface for Maple yet. Given
that the student package is only $99, I may buy it after they complete
a Windows interface.
I'm also curious about MathCAD's capabilities. (Anybody got a phone
number for the publisher?) I haven't heard anything about Macsyma in a
while.

1143.17 | mathcad phone number | STAR::ABBASI | i dont talk in second person | Tue Jan 19 1993 14:34 | 10 |

phone number for MATHCAD is 1-800-688-8553. be careful, it should
be ONLY $79 for the whole thing! there is a special going on, they
call it the "preferred Engineer/scientist discount program", i think
that is going on till March. i think you must have received in mail
from them this invitation for this price to get it, but try to
ask them on the phone, may be they'll give it to you.

1143.18 | not for my personal use | QUIVER::ARGO | | Tue Jan 19 1993 15:33 | 12 |
| re. .14:
I don't have a PC at home, so I would like to run it on my workstation
(DECstation 5000/25) here at work. I don't see it being for my
personal use. It could be installed on the host system so that anyone
with access could use it. There are IBM-compatible PCs in the lab
I could use if need be.
Is there someone in DEC I should contact or should I call Wolfram
directly?

There's an ad in the 12 January PC Magazine for a free Mathcad Working
Model which includes a demo and is "fully functional". I don't see the
catch, but I've sent for a copy.
Re .18:
I would call Wolfram directly and inquire.
