115.0. "DEC trips and alert status" by BOWLES::BOWLES (Bob Bowles - T&N EIC/Engineering) Mon Aug 20 1990 20:53

    As my DEC job requires a great deal of travelling, I am wondering
    how I should conduct my DEC business and stay 'by the phone'?

    If I were to be put on alert status, it would seem advisable
    to stay away from trips. I meant to (and intend to) ask my
    unit, but we were far too busy with CBR refresher training this
    weekend (story and my picture 'suited up' on page A-11 of last
    Sunday's Providence Journal).

    Any advice / recommendations welcome.

    Bob

    I use a beeper and my unit can find me anywhere in the US. They also
    have my work and home numbers. My normal process is to talk to the
    unit 1+ times a week anyway.

    gee, you must be an "old-timer" too.

    Not really an old timer, but the 'bees in my unit and our Gunny
    advisor are definitely 'experienced'...

    Hmmmm.... the 1989 edition of SEABEE Combat Handbook still uses CBR

    I never said the 'bees are up to date, we'll probably be the very
    last ones to switch over to camo uniforms (if ever).

115.4What's Your Status?AKOV12::BURKLEYFri Aug 24 1990 00:3619
    RE the base note, it depends on your status and what 'they' have told
    you to do. Telephone standby? Crew rest? Pyramid Recall? Active Duty
    orders for standby status? Two hour response time? Mobilization
    Standby?  and so on

    I can appreciate your question and dilemma. I don't know your unit and
    what you do in it. They're all different and my unit has been pretty
    much making up the rules/changing old ones as this situation is unique.
    But it all comes down to pay status and what (if any) orders you're on.

    If you're not on some kind of pay status and don't have any orders,
    you're still free to come and go as you please -- i.e., work, trips,
    vacations, etc. Don't worry. They'll find you if they need to. But
    calling in occassionally or giving them a number/timeframe to reach you
    won't hurt. In any case, using common sense won't hurt either. This
    is probably not the time to take that hunting or camping trip out in the
    boonies...or go on DEC business to the Mid East.

    They'll find you if they need you. True enough, if you let the office
    know where you are, leave a phone number, check in, etc. Given that,
    go where you need to.
115.6Contact yes, report noAKOV12::LORENTZENFri Aug 31 1990 20:536
    I was to leave yesterday for Japan, Hong Kong and Sydney but the trip
    was cancelled because of our current cost crunch. I had no fear that
    I couldn't be contacted but reporting for duty in 24 hours would have
    been a big problem.
