108.0. "Flight Physicals" by COMET::YOUNGK (Tennis is my Racquet) Tue Jun 05 1990 00:49

    I am planning to enlist in the Air Force reserves. The job that I
    am interested in is a Load Master. My recruiter says that I need
    to take a flight physical. I have taken my entry physical and passed.
    What is the difference between the flight and entry physicals?
    Any info would be appreciated.

    				Thanx,

    flight physical is just a more complete physical than the entry one.
    The way I understand it just by by passing the entry physical does not
    mean that you are able to fly.

    If that is incorrect I'm sorry maybe another noter can ad some details.

    Loadmaster is a good choice you can make some good money with all the
    flight pay.

    good luck.

    This has absolutely nothing to do with flight physicals but apros
    pos loadmasters; we have a Movements Squadron just down the road
    from us. Occasionally we are asked to volunteer as passengers so
    "they" can practice their loading/unloading skills. It amounts to
    circuits and bumps in Hercies, but it's all in a days work.

    I quite enjoy it actually.

    I'll go back to sleep now.

108.3Flight Physicals vs ........MSBCS::TARMEYWed Jun 06 1990 16:3125
    Caution.......Data is old!!!!!

    If I recall correctly, the prime requirement to pass a 'normal'
    physical is that one is:

    	a. capable of walking into the examinining area
    	b. breathing when the examiner (notice, didn't say Doctor) appears
    	c. warm
    	d. capable of walking out of the examining room

    A Flight Physical, on the other hand, is a 'real' Physical. Expect
    things like:

    	a. a thorough eye exam
    	b. a thorough hearing test
    	c. an EKG
    	d. an interview/debrief with the Doctor

    Remembering the assembly line nature of the Military Medical Community,
    it seems to me that an annual flight physical took the at least half a
    day.

    That's what I remember.

108.5Turn Your Head When You CoughAIMHI::P_LANDRYAnalytical Olde ChiefThu Jun 07 1990 21:4222
Bill forgot to mention one or two other elements of the physicals....
those items that give you something to talk to the troops about when you
get back to the unit.

"turn your head when you cough"
  "stand still"

and "Relax, I'm almost through" or "this won't hurt"

I swear that during my last physical the doctor
 a. forgot to take off his college ring
 b. checked both prostate and tonsils at the same time (from the same
    direction)

Flight physicals are actually quite a bit more stringent in the Navy than
the regular or "ground' physicals. Hearing test, eye tests, ekg, etc.

Go for it!

108.6Difference is criteriaMSDOA::HORTONTue Jun 19 1990 23:094
    The primary difference has to do with "passing" criteria. Flight
    physicals are more stringent in areas like vision, hearing, heart
    issues,etc. Also, fighter pilots are at an even higher level due to
    the G forces which they must absorb.
