| There are numerous SAS units. The 21st and 23rd are open to the
public, in fact it is the only way by which a man can enter the
SAS direct as it is possible, I'm told, to go from the TA to the
regulars. The officers in the TA SAS are all regulars, the Troopers
are reserves.
- 21st is a TA unit based in the south of England
- 23rd covers the north and midland region.
- 63rd SAS Signals regiment.
There is a SAS Reserve consisting of ex-SAS members
Then there is the famous 22nd Regiment, of embassy storming fame.
If you want any more information just ask,
Dave

| I would be interested in the names of all the Engineer regiments as we
have an affiliation in the land down under having descended form them.
I am currently a reserve engineer with the 4th Field Engineer Regiment,
2nd Australian Division.

69.7 | WHY NOT ROYAL | WAV13::FITZGERALDJ | | Thu Jun 21 1990 03:26 | 6 |
| I noticed that the intelligence corps was the only unit which did
not include the word royal in it's title; is there a reason for this or
just coincidental. It is my understanding that you British do not take
any reference to the royal family lightly.

It was recently pointed out to me by one of our cousins accross

Army.

Perhaps, someone could explain why there is the RAF, RN & RM, but
the British Army?

| Bob,
Well the story I was told goes like this:
In days of old when there was a navy and army, the individual army
regiments were given Royal status. The flying force started out
as the Royal Engineers and it was decided to use the this section
of the RE as the basis for an aerial unit. The Royal Flying Corps was
formed( I suspect a lot of snobbery went into this name). Then it
was decided to merge the RFC with the Navy's flying division. The
Navy said it would not agree to the merging of it's air section
with the RFC if it, the Navy, could not be called the Royal Navy.
As you know the RFC was renamed the Royal Air Force.
Plausible?

I should have specified that the a part of the RE was the origin
of the RFC and not,"The flying force started out as the Royal
Engineers"
Sorry.

69.12 | Royal Financing | KAOO01::LAPLANTE | | Thu Aug 02 1990 23:42 | 14 |
|
Didn't the 'Royal' for infantry/cavalry originally denote that the
regiment was funded by the monarch as opposed to regiments raised
and financed by individuals who then hired them out to the crown.
There are also regiments that don't have 'Royal' but are known as
the "King's Own" "Queen's Own". These regiments are just as royal
as others.
I know that eventually, the term was conferred as a mark of honour.
This is the most common usage now.

As part of the latest "Options for Change" my unit has been earmarked
for a drastic re-organisation.
I am part of 2 Wessex and we will be merging with 1 Wessex to form
2nd Royal Gloucester, Berkshire & Wiltshire Regt, or "Great Big
Willies" as the nickname goes.
BHQ, HQ Coy and the support elements will be based in Reading, with
Coys at Swindon, Gloucester and Bristol. This to be effective from
October 1st '95.
Present 2 Wessex locations in Bracknell, Slough and Newbury will
still be open until '97.
It's pretty much as expected, and my job (Recce Pl Sgt) is pretty
safe.

Lawrence,
As far as I know they will remain open throughout the amalgamation
but will be closed sometime within the following two years. The troops
will be offered places in HQ Coy (Reading). I think the barracks will
be taken over by other units.
