57.0. "Terms of Service" by KAOO01::LAPLANTE (Santa Claus is a Canadian) Thu Dec 21 1989 22:41

There have been a few notes about the entrance requirements to join
the various reserves and some notes about 'retirement points' that
apply to the US but there don't appear to be any notes that relate
    the following:

    	a. What are the enrollment requirements
    	b. What are the terms of service
    	c. What are the pay/benefits for service
	d. What are the various levels of service and the differences
    	e. How do you get out prior to retirement

With our international community, it might be nice/painful to compare.

    Re .0:

I'll try to provide some info related to the USNR......

Active Mariner Program (No prior service):

    -	8 year obligation (six drilling reserve, two inactive)

    -	48 paid drills per year

    -	12 to 14 days annual training per year

    -	up to 180 days initial active duty for training (boot camp +
    	A school)

There are other programs as well with varying combinations of active
    and reserve duty.

    Benefits include:

    -	Advancement/Promotion

    -	Medical coverage during active duty for training

    -	Exchange/Commissary privileges

    -	Low-cost life insurance

    -	Travel on US govt. aircraft

    -	Income tax deductions

    -	Voluntary Recall

    -	Re-enlistment bonuses

    -	Retirement

    There's a lot more but that's a basic summary.

57.3Forgot to mention.....DOCSRV::STARINMy other ham shack is a GooneybirdThu Dec 21 1989 23:0910
    Re .2:

Forgot to mention that the program is for male/female ages 17-26
(up to 35 for prior service programs) and that if you miss a drill
while in obligatory service status, the Navy can activate you for
up to 180 days with the Fleet (yecch)....what is known in the Navy
as "haze gray and underway" :) :) :)

    Re: -1

I believe you have to miss 6 drills (3 8-hour days) as an obligor
to be eligible for 'haze gray and underway'.

I'll check next time I talk to RESFIRST (which will be soon since my
old unit SNAFUed 12 of last year's drills).

Thank GOD for copies of musters and IDTT orders to a better unit this year.
