32.0. "Lest we forget..." by SAC::PHILPOTT_I (Col I F 'Tsingtao Dhum' Philpott) Wed Nov 29 1989 16:46

As our readers know we have just passed November 11, which here in Britain is
Armistice Day, and in the States is Veterans Day.

This year is 50 years since the outbreak of WWII and 75 since the start of WWI.

Here in Britain the run up to Armistice Day is marked by the charitable
collection of money by the Royal British Legion ("Poppy Sales" - which if our
American readers saw any Brit politicos with a red paper flower in their button
holes earlier this month, is what it was for!)

Also this year a week after Armistice Day the BBC ran their annual bore-a-thon
for "Chilcren in Need", and in the weeks before Armistice Day they asked people
to save their pennies so they could collect a 100,000,000 pennies for the kids.

Indeed just after Armistice Day here in the office I was badgered for my spare
pennies for the kids - nobody came round trying to sell poppies though.

On November 11th itself I was absolutely horrified to hear, not once but twice,
women tell the child they had in tow not to buy a poppy but to keep the pennies
for Children in Need.

So having counted very slowly to a large number and allowed my ire to subside,
what am I going to do?

Here and now I am pledging that my notes in this conference and in
DEFENSE_ISSUES are subject to personal sponsorship: that is to say that next
November I will donate 50p to the Royal British Legion Poppy Appeal for every
note I have written.

Perhaps others would like to jump on my bandwagon - after all nobody but us
chickens will know, and it's for a good cause. So if you want to pledge for your
notes then reply here. I am sure our US colleagues can give to VFW or the
American Legion, and the other noters must have some suitable charity to give
to.

Here, here Ian. For the swabbies in the conference, let's not forget
that it was HMS Electra (I think - correct me I'm wrong) that was
with USS Houston during her last battle (it was Electra's last battle
as well) and it was HMAS Canberra that was lost at the Battle of Savo
Island along with ships of the US fleet.

I'll pledge a dime (10 cents) for each note/reply in all conferences
I belong to that I write between now and next Veteran's Day to be to be
split equally between DAV, VFW, and AL.

With the 11th day of the 11th month falling on a Sunday next year
the Armistice Day parades may take on a special meaning.
Attendance at a parade is already in my diary.

    As to a financial commitment, I'll make a contribution but I don't
know what yet, but I'll do something for the Poppy appeal next year.
    I'll let you know.

Ok, my contribution will be to run in the local half-marathon on
April 1st. I'll get some sponsers and send the money on afterwards.

I did it, the local half marathon! I've got about 40 pounds to collect
and forward to the appropriate address. Ian, is the Poppy appeal
and Earl Haigh fund the same charity as some people I've heard state?
Whatever, do you have any address please?

    Dave

PS: How many entries is that you have entered now?
32.5BRABAM::PHILPOTTCol I F 'Tsingtao Dhum' PhilpottTue Apr 03 1990 14:489
yes its the same fund.

I don't have an address to hand, but the local branch of the Royal British
Legion (in the phone book) will pass on the donation with pleasure, I am sure.

I must count my entries...

That reminds me, Ian....I made a similar pledge last November. As
I recall (I'll have to look it up in VETERANS) it was to benefit
    US veterans organizations.

I'm an inveterate noter so I better start saving now! :-) :-)

Good show on your part BTW.
