23.1 | SLR - Looks like a big M-16, right? | ABE::STARIN | It didn't happen on my watch, Chief. | Fri Nov 24 1989 21:41 | 12 |
| Re .0:
Well, Dustie, I'd like to assist but I'm afraid my knowledge of
the SLR and GPMG is pretty limited except to ask does oiling the
bolt help any or does that just lead to jams?
I might be able to help on M-16, M-60, and M-203 questions though
(plus we have some experts on such weapons in this notesfile who
can help also - I'm in the "relatively familiar" category).

| Re .0:
I remembered after I wrote 23.1 that I do have a little experience
with the SLR (aka FN I think) after all.
In 1985, I went with my unit on a deployment near Glasgow, Scotland and
while we were there we did a little cross-training with the Royal
Marine Reserves. While everyody who wasn't on watch was enjoying
liberty one Saturday, I volunteered (I know, I know..never volunteer)
to go with the local Royal Marine Reserve types on a little field
exercise.
Myself and a corporal positioned ourselves in the rain and the mud
to ambush a fire team of Royal Marine Reserve Boots who very obligingly
came towards our position in the open. Their job was to practice
basic fire and manuever stuff and zap us. As soon as they were in
view, we proceeded to plaster them with blanks from our SLR's and some
firecracker-type devices which I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole
(the corporal thought that was pretty funny). My SLR had a telescopic
sight so it was easy to zero in on the targets. Unfortunately, the
SLR jammed often with blanks and the corp. had to help me a couple
of times (not unlike the M16).
All in all, it was interesting and fun. I sure stood out from the group
with my Seabee greens though!
Later, we all went on liberty together.....man, can those Royal
Marines drink!

| I don't have much trouble cocking, it's remembering whether or not
the mechanism is pushed back or just released that gets me.

who gets cuts from cocking weapons are women and wimps !!

For shame, I have never had any problem nor received any cuts.
I agree with .5, this is NOT funny.

Totally unapproved of course...
Take a rubber bicycle hand grip and slit it along its length. It will then
fit over the cocking handle. Cut to length plus about 1 centimetre.
It will make cocking much easier.

23.10 | The battle lines are being drawn.. | PEKING::NASHD | Whatever happened to Capt. Beaky? | Tue Dec 12 1989 10:35 | 27 |
| For the folks who don't know Dustie or Steve let me describe them
for they do battle. We can then remember them as they were.
Dustie:
6 feet 3 inches tall(approx), long blonde hair, razor sharp tongue
and lethal right hook. Seems to lack stamina but has the flexibility
to dodge and weave when necesary. Very determined and occasionally
stubborn. Learning what to do with field dressings. Known to resort
to illegal tactics, ie the end justifies the mean. New to reserve
forces so may not know all the rules anyway.
Steve:
A little taller than Dustie. Could be a contender for Mr Universe.
Experienced at dodging attacks from subordinates and probably has
more stamina. Also determined but sometimes goes where others fear
to tread( eg this particular topic!!). Will probably be the first
human to experience Dustie's techniques with a field dressing.
May have a tendency not to hit a woman though, and be bound by ingrained
rules and tactics.
Incidentally, as they both work in the same building there are verbal
attacks taking place.
I'll keep you informed of the battle.

Dave,
You told all our lovely Note writers, that basically I'm a lethal
weapon. I don't think thats fair. Do you!!!!!
I'm sure when provoked that I can turn into a raging tiger, but
usually I'm just a little pussy cat., who likes to play with little
mice - get my drift.
Chuckle ......
And the occasional powerful weapon!!
Dustie
p.s. this is getting good.

When you're staring down the business end of a locked and loaded
weapon, I don't care who's at the trigger end, it has a way of putting
your priorities in perspective! :) :) :)
You'll never find me giving you a hard time, Dustie! :) :) :)
