re: .0

My own favorite movies are pretty clear on the top 5, a little more uncertain
after that.

	1. "The Last Wave" - Peter Weir's apocalyptic movie about a lawyer
(Richard Chamberlain) who gets in over his head with some
		Aborigine shaman types
	2. "Voyage En Douce" - a very sly French movie about two women
looking at vacation houses in Provence who find themselves
falling back into the patterns of their childhood friendship
	3. "Wings of Desire" - Wim Wenders film about angels in Berlin
	4. "Lawrence of Arabia" - Peter O'Toole is amazing as the Great Man.
	5. "Casablanca" - Bogie and Ingrid doing "play it again, Sam"
Then there's:
	6. "Persona" - Ingmar Bergman's best film, about the confusion of
		identity in intimate relationships
	7. "The African Queen" - Bogie and Hepburn in the jungle
	8. "Manhattan" - Woody Allen's best
	9. "The Maltese Falcon" - Bogie, Sydney Greenstreet and Peter Lorre
	10. "The Milagro Beanfield War" - underrated Robert Redford-directed
		comdey/drama
Plus Woody Allen's "Sleeper", "Bananas", and "Hannah and Her Sisters", Ingmar
Bergamn's "Shame" and "The Seventh Seal", "The Last Temptation of Christ",
"Jean De Florette", "Witness", "Treasure of the Sierra Madre", and "Seven
Samurai" for honorable mentions.

Personally, I'd rather hear what the readers here consider to be their
Top Ten Favorite Movies of all time, rather than Siskel's and Ebert's.

    Just a thought!

Personally I prefer to know what the critics choses are.
Then I can compare my choices with theirs in order to
know how to weigh those critics future reviews.

So why can't we have both? Does hearing the critics choices some how make
it less possible to hear individual opinions?

re .8, both is fine by me. It's just that I thought .0 meant personal

I love doing top ten lists for almost anything. My film list changes constantly
with four or five remaining constant. Really ten are far too few. A better way
for me would be to break them down by genre. The problem there of course are
the films that bridge genres or belong to none. Here's some for now off the
top of my head (or somewhere around there):

Dramas:

Wuthering Heights ('39)
Gone With the Wind
Seven Samurai
The Ghost and Mrs Muir
The Quiet Man
The Informer
Marty
The Natural
Casablanca
Inherit the Wind

Musicals:

Swing Time
Top Hat
The Bandwagon
An American in Paris
Singin in the Rain
Shall We Dance
Follow the Fleet
West Side Story
A Star is Born ('54)
Easter Parade

Westerns:

The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
My Darling Clementine
Red River
Shane
Silverado
Winchester '73
High Noon
Rio Bravo
Dances With Wolves

Film Noir:

Out of the Past
Pursued (a film noir western!)
The Maltese Falcon
Laura
The Big Heat
Gilda
Double Indemnity
Murder, My Sweet
The Lady From Shanghi
Chinatown

Romantic Comedy:

When Harry Met Sally
Bringing Up Baby
The Philadelphia Story
Holiday
Bachelor Mother
My Man Godfrey
Nothing Sacred
Born Yesterday
Breakfast at Tiffanys
Desk Set

Suspense/Mystery:

Rebecca
Rear Window
Vertigo
Notorious
Suspision
North x Northwest
The Big Sleep
Bad Day at Black Rock
Shadow of a Doubt
The 39th Step
(What can I say? Hitchcock is the master.)

Horror:

I Walked With a Zombie
Cat People (Lewton)
The Leopard Man
Bride of Frankenstein
The Wolf Man
An American Werewolf in London
The Thing (From Another World)
The Thing
Tremors
Them!

Fantasy/Science Fiction

Excalibur
Field of Dreams
The Abyss
Alien
Aliens
Terminator II
Star Trek 2,4,6 (ok so I cheated a little)
The Invasion of the Body Snatchers (Siegel)
The Day the Earth Stood Still
The Princess Bride

Adventure:

Raiders of the Lost Ark
Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Gunga Din
The Adventures of Robin Hood
The Sea Hawk
Only Angels Have Wings
Charge of the Light Brigade
Lawrence of Arabia
Robin Hood:Prince of Thieves
The Man Who Would Be King

That's all I have time for now.

I dunno, it's hard to keep a constant top ten. I can list a few of my
favorites. By favorite, I mean movies which struck a chord, which are
still great to watch. By no means is this list meant to indicate what
I think are the "best" movies ever.

    Star Wars
    The Natural
    Jaws
    The Killing Fields
    Phar Lap
    The Prisoner of Zenda (1937)
    Robin Hood (Disney)
    The Man From Snowy River
Return to Snowy River (or Man from Snowy River II)

(I'm positively certain I've neglected to mention some of my
    favorites.)

Here's some I'm pretty keen on:

    Almost anything animated from Disney
    Resevoir Dogs
The Krays (This and Dogs are great character studies, I think)
    The Lion in Winter
    Flash Gordon (GREAT costuming)
    Casablanca
Roadhouse (my Patrick Swayze/he-man film fix)
    Steel Dawn (see above)

These are my current Top Ten Favorite Movies. As .14 said, this list
is in no way meant to indicate the "best" movies ever. It's simply the

again, "struck a chord" with me.

It's hard to make a top ten that represents all the genres and eras. I prefer
comedies to a westerns, so maybe that's why I don't have any westerns on
my list. Also slighted are animation, sci-fi and fantasy. Here they are:

Citizen Cane
Wizard of Oz
Top Hat
Casablanca
Lawrence of Arabia
Annie Hall
Nashville
Fannie and Alexander
Black Robe
Bram Stoker's Dracula

In no particular order:

Les enfants du paradis (first entry in chart)
The Thief of Badgad (1940 Korda version, ditto)
	Casablanca
	Some like it hot
A matter of life and death (or Colonel Blimp, not sure)
	Citizen Kane
La belle et la bete (and the Disney version if I can have it for free)
Frankenstein (James Whale version, dead scary)
	Rembrandt (for Charles Laughton's face)
	Batman

Only three in colour, two of them lurid and one (Batman) gothic. And only one
after 1950...not that I don't enjoy more modern films, these just bear watching
and thinking about again and again.

Looking at the list, most of them are even better when you see them as part of
their director's or producer's collected works or style. I could probably manage
on a desert island with a different Billy Wilder, Powell and Pressburger or
James Whale. Or even another Carne, though losing Les enfants du paradis would
be tough. I could also manage with (for example) another example of Charles
Laughton on peak form.

Having only recently discovered this conference (intuitively, I knew it
existed -- it had to!!), let me resurrect this topic with my own favorite
top 10 movies of all time, subject to change without notice:

1. Little Big Man -- Hoffman and Chief Dan George are dynamite
2. Chinatown -- my sister, my daughter, my sister...
3. The Deerhunter -- almost as disturbing as Apocalypse Now
4. Being There -- Sellers is perfect
5. Patton -- every time I see a picture of the real Patton, it doesn't
    look right
6. The Day the Earth Stood Still -- we may need someone like Klaatu soon
7. 2001: A Space Odyssey -- what does it all mean, Mister Natural?
8. Forrest Gump -- what a wonderful picture, it restoreth my soul
9. Marathon Man -- is it safe? I'll never look at a dentist the same way
    ever again
10. Kelly's Heroes -- great parody, funny and dumb, thoroughly entertaining

Almost, but not quites:

11. Innocent Blood -- Robert Loggia and Don Rickles are priceless
12. Rain Man -- that was Tom Cruise? Are you sure?
13. Seconds -- obscure flick with Rock Hudson, John Randolph, and Granpa
    Walton!!
14. Blue Velvet -- I don't think I'll ever recover from Dennis Hopper's
performance, the final scene is devastating

This is a pretty old topic , but it's a good repository of people's
opinions on movies.. Some of my best films , in no particular order :

o Raging Bull - De Niro as Jake La Motta in Scorcese's film is
    		        memorable in this one.

o Spartacus - The only reason this is listed is because of the
fantastic range of character actors - Peter Ustinov,
Lawrence Olivier, Charles Laughton - the cameo roles
were better than the main roles played by Kirk
    		      Douglas and Tony Curtis

o Andrei Rubalov - This is a Russian masterpiece by Tarkovsky,
whose films are almost like poetry and are true
cinematic experiences - Solaris, the Stalker,
etc. But this one is my favorite.

o Macbeth	- Orson Welles plays Macbeth with a markedly
Scottish accent in this one. Remarkable
adaptation of the play. A contemporary
    			  interpretation.

o 2001, A Space Odyssey - The sense of wonder that this film
inspired when first released in the early
    				  was truly awesome.

o Les Quatre Cent Coups - A great story by a legendary French
    				  director, Francois Truffaut. In English,
    				  the Four Hundred Blows

    	o Z - Another great film , a political thriller with a
    			  great performance by Yves Montand

o A Bout De Souffle or Breathless - Jean Luc Goddard's masterpiece,
    					    another French film with Jean
    					    Paul Belemondo in the lead.

	o Ray's Apu Trilogy - Showing Oct 4 1995, Oct 11 1995 and
Oct 18 1995 in Boston. A must see.

o Rashoman	- Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece - One murder, four
witnesses, four stories - A real puzzle.

There are some other all time greats [ 10 is too short ]; here are some
more movies to stimulate the imagination :

o Kurosawa's Kagemusha [ the Shadow Warrior ] and the Seven Samurai

o Taxi Driver - a great film by Martin Scorcese, again with De Niro
                	in the lead.

o Bicycle Thieves - One of my favorites, an old Italian B&W film
by Vittorio De Sica. His other films are
    			     disappointing.

o The Wages of Fear - Not the one starring Roy Scheider but the old
French one, which was in B&W.

o The Seventh Seal - A great film with Max Von Syndow by Ingmar
    			     Bergman

o Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence - Incredible performance by David
    					  Bowie

o Knife in the Water - A great film on obsession by Roman Polanksi

o La Strada - Anthony Quinn puts in a terrific, towering
performance in this Fellini film. Probably one of the
best roles to grace the screen.

    	o Apocalypse Now - It's an experience.

From my TOP.10 file - subject to change, as always:

    1. Star Wars - The best roller coaster ride I've been on!

    2. Raiders Of The Lost Ark - never seem to get tired of this one; I
love the opening scene in the Peruvian tomb and the convoy chase.

    3. Jurassic Park - dinosaurs are real! A splendid job by Spielberg,
       ILM et. al.

    4. Hunt For Red October - loved the book, and the film comes close
       enough for me.

    5. 2001: A Space Odyssey - This was the film I'd watched the most times
       prior to VCRs!

    6. Fantasia - wonderful today; must have been INCREDIBLE for the 1940s
audiences (since "Steamboat Willie" came barely a dozen years
       prior!)

    7. Who Framed Roger Rabbit - a masterful integration of animation and
live action, and a wonderful story as well.

    8. Blade Runner - dark, compelling, pessimistic and yet uplifting
(except for the constant rain ;^).......)

    9. The Secret Of N.I.M.H. - a heartwarming story. Don Bluth's first
post-Disney animation is superlative, and Jerry Goldsmith's music
       equally so.

    10. Ghostbusters - who you gonna call?

    Honorable mentions:

Star Trek VI - The Undiscovered Country
    Casablanca
    Firefox
    Spaceballs
    Strategic Air Command
    Tora! Tora! Tora!
    Forrest Gump
    Fern Gully
The Music Box (a Laurel & Hardy 2-reeler; their *only* Academy Award)
Starcrash (just kidding .... this one's so BAD, it's good!!!!!)

    In no particular order:

    1. A Matter of Life and Death - Powell and Pressburger, and a wonderful
       use of technicolor and monochrome.

    2. 2001: A Space Odyssey - Brilliant yet flawed. Kubrick does SF and
       does it well.

    3. Reservoir Dogs - Tarantino! And what a cast; Madsen, Keitel, Roth...

    4. Star Wars - Massively derivative in content, looking slightly date
when compared to modern SFX, but still a great achievement.

    5. The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover - The pinnacle of Peter
Greenaway's cinematic output. So far, he has never surpassed this study
       in excess and depravity.

    6. Casablanca - 'nuff said.

    7. Koyaanisqatsi - No dialogue, no plot, but a powerful message and a
       great soundtrack by Philip Glass.

    8. Apocalypse Now - A nightmare vision and a nightmare for all
       involved.

    9. All Quiet on the Western Front - War is hell, even then. By the way,
       don't bother with the remake.

    10. The Killing Fields - An emotional rollercoaster ride through a
devastated country. Tragedy tinged with hope.

The old Movies conference had an overall favorites topic, though I can't
remember the exact name of the topic. A search showed me a Best of 92, and
nothing else for "favorites" or "best."

Given some thought, what 10 movies would you list as your all-time favorites?

I'll write 10, knowing for sure that I'll forget something. Not necessarily in
order:

1. Papillion (1973) - where even Hoffman (Oscar) admits that he was out-classed
	    by his co-star, Steve McQueen.

2. Breaking Away (1979) - Done on a budget of something like $120K, and one
    of Dennis Quaid's first movies.

3. Back to the Future (1985) - A rarity: A comedy that makes people think,
whether they admit it or not.

4. A Midnight Clear (1991 or 92) - This movie shows that it is
circumstances, not virtue or evil that spawn heroic or cowardly acts.

5. Psycho (1960) - Psycho.

6. Northwest Passage (1940) - One of the first full-color movies ever
produced, based on Kenneth Roberts' account of Rogers' Rangers, great
    story, surprising cast.

7. Wizard of Oz (1939) - Still love it.

8. Forrest Gump (1994) - Lives up to its hype.

9. Jeremiah Johnson (1972) - Excellent story, some of the best one-liners
    I've ever heard.

10. The Great Escape (1966) - A true action/adventure movie.

And about 20 others, though I think these are my favorites. Anyone else
want to try?

Not necessarily in order:

1. One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest. Jack Nicholson in a mental institution.

2. Catch 22. Alan Arkin. Insanity of war, air force in Italy during World
	War II.

3. Dr. Strangelove. Peter Sellers, George C. Scott. Insane general bombs
Russia to start World War III.

4. Duck Soup. Insanity of war, Marx Brothers style.

5. Young Frankenstein. Mel Brooks parody starring Gene Wilder.

6. Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Medieval humor.

7. Amadeus. Story about how a mediocre but well-connected composer reacted
	to Mozart's genius.

8. The Graduate. Dustin Hoffman, music by Simon and Garfunkle. Sex comedy
about a recent college graduate not sure what to do with his life.

9. The Tin Drum. German film about an unusual boy growing up (or rather
failing to grow up) during World War II. Not a heart-warming family
	flick by any means.

10. Paper Moon. Ryan and Tatum O'Neal. Story about a small-time hustler
	and his maybe daughter.

Top ten favorite lists are fun but usually kind of artificial since usually
you can come up with several favorite top ten films with mostly different
titles each time. Here's ten of mine for today.

Wuthering Heights ('39)
Swing Time
Gone With the Wind
Vertigo
Seven Samurai
The Abyss
When Harry Met Sally
Rebecca
The Searchers
Field of Dreams

A couple of personal favourites that I don't think have been mentioned:

"A Christmas Carol" Alastair Sim as Ebenezer Scrooge. The ultimate
    Christmas movie. I love it.

"Wild Strawberries" Ingmar Bergman. My favourite Bergman. I haven't
seen some of his best known movies, I admit, so this may not be
definitive. But this I've seen a number of times, and it doesn't weaken.

"Pelle the Conqueror" I saw only once, the year it came out in North
America, but I found it tremendously touching, & still remember the
experience of watching it. Max von Sydow as an agricultural labourer
in 19th-century Denmark, looking out for smart, brave young Pelle.

And I have to echo the many noters who mentioned "Casablanca."

                          [Internet Movie Database]

The top 250 movies as voted by YOU

(N.B. Each title has received 200 or more votes)

The formula for calculating the top 250 films gives a true Bayesian
estimate:

   weighted rank (WR) = (v/(v+m))*R + (m/(v+m))*C

   where:

R = average for the movie (mean) = (Rating)
v = number of votes for the movie = (votes)
m = minimum votes required to be listed in the top 250 (currently 200)
C = the mean vote across the whole report (currently 6.62)

Hmmm ... by my thumbnail analysis, this list does show an
    internet/hacker/dweeb/futurist/technologist influence. When
you look at the number of scifi/fantasy/technology themes in
the list, it far exceeds the number of ones I've seen on similar
"people's choice" lists done by ETW, Movieline, etc.

It's an animated short by Nick Parks (sp?). I believe it won the
Academy Award for best Animated Short in... maybe 1994? It's the
second in a series of 3 shorts staring Wallace and Gromit. Actually, I
think all three won academy awards, the last one being this year.

It's EXTREMELY funny and sits very high up on my "best of" list as
well. Worth picking up at your local video store.

287.83My top 10 and some of my husband'sKAOFS::P_CHAPLINSKYMon Feb 24 1997 19:5925
Thanks to the noters of this conference, I have been able to select
good movies. Here is my list of top 10. I love foreign films as
        you can see.

        In no particular order

        The English Patient
        Il Postino
        Like Water for Chocolate
        The Shawshank Redemption
        The Commitments
        The Crying Game
        Forest Gump
        Pulp Fiction
        Eat Drink Man Woman
        Fargo

I also liked "Farewell My Concubine" but it's not one that I would
necessarily recommend to others. My husband would definitely replace
one on my list with "Usual Suspects". Come to think of it, he would
probably bump a few for "The Russians are Coming", and "Princess Bride"
(I can't believe it, I've slept through this movie twice with him).

Re: .83

I agree with the husband, replace "The Commitments" with "The Usual Suspects".

Good list, though!
