| Linda,
Sorry to hear you will be leaving the area, but good luck.
Instead of the motorhome, it might be cheaper and easier to load all
the birds and their cages into a Ryder 1-way rental truck. But not as
comfortable for the Driver(s).

Linda,
I don't have any tips to offer as I never moved with that many birds.
I'd consider the motor home. I wish you the best of luck!! And I
want to know when the yard sale is??!! ;') ;')

Linda,
Good luck! We flew with ours - it took two of us on seperate flights,
as we maxed out the number of animal crates that could go on a single
flight. If you fly, be sure and have your birds fly WITH you. That
guarantees they will make transfers at the same time as you do. If you
ship them as freight, they can end up sitting on a loading dock and the
connecting flights are not guaranteed.

856.5 | The ethics of a forced move.... | MRKTNG::COMPTON | | Mon May 16 1994 22:32 | 33 |

Well, we looked at vans, cargo and mini, and at motor homes. Guess we
are facing a major investment to buy a used van, uncertain of the
reliability for the move, or about 5K in fees to lease a motor home.
They only get leased for round-trips, so we'd have to figure out how
to get the motor home back and then the driver(s) back to Colorado.
And then there is always looking at ways to reduce the number of
birds I just _must_ take to Colorado with me! I think we could handle
the five cats on the plane on our house-hunting trip and have them stay
with a friend for about six weeks (maybe not a friend still at the end
of that time), and transport our half-dozen medium to large pet birds
and get down from three dozen to one dozen breeders (from 18 pairs to
6 pairs). This is still a lot of fragile life to relocate.
Some of my thoughts on this have to do with whether it is
right/ethical/humane to put some of these birds through the four to
five days in the van/motor home or find them good homes here.
I just found homes for four of my six finches because I don't
think they'd make it at all.
Any opinions you wish to share?
Thanks....

| I really sympathize with your situation. I would be awful to part with
the majority of your flock. I'm sure you've worked for years building
up the stock that you have.
Although I am not an advocate of flying, this may be the only way to
go. Can you talk to someone at the airlines to make "special"
arrangements for such a large relocation/undertaking. Who knows, they
may be able to work something out for you in terms of pricing and
proper handling where you have so many birds to transport.
You may want to call some large scale breeders that routinely ship
birds and get some tips from them. Also, maybe the Agriculture
Department might have some handling and shipping tips.
You may also be able to get some tips from Angel Memorial in Boston or
from researchers like Kaytee, or Dr. LaFabres.
Best of Luck.

Angell Memorial Hospital in Boston MA is a large veterinay hospital.
I had to deal with them for a dog years ago and it was an awesome
experience. Just like a human hospital, the animals get their own
ID cards and there are visiting hours. Not sure if it is considered a
teaching hospital like Tufts but we did see an awful lot of different
vets.

| Angell Memorial is a teaching hospital. Two recent graduates from the
Tufts Vet School in Grafton, MA who took short internships at the Littleton
Animal Hospital to observe avian medicine are taking their next turn at
Angell as first year vets. It is in the same building as the Mass.
SPCA. I agree with MaryAnne, it's awesome. /Linda C.

| Thanks, Jeanne, you made several useful suggestions. MaryAnne McDonald
had also suggested renting a plane, I think mostly in jest, but who
know! I'll keep you posted here. /Linda

Linda I was serious! I always thought that a private transport system
for animals would be a great business. I have seen some ads for them,
though I can't remember where, might have been Animal Sense. Contact
the airport in Nashua to see if there are any "pilots for rent" ;')
They have these services for horses.
Hmmmm lets see, I'm due for a vacation, how many birds can I fit in my
Subaru......
