Re: last
How is THX-1138 anyway? George Lucas' first
movie, right? Never saw it, should I? Does it
exist in video stores?
Thanks, Rob who is writing this in the wrong

THX-1138 is not too bad. It's very reminisent of George Orwell's
'1984'. Same sort of invasive 'Big-Brother' type of thing, using a
variety of drugs to pacify and control the population. It is worth
viewing at least once, probably twice to get some of the deeper level
nuances being thrown about. The end is OK too.
Lucas also slips a little reference to THX in Star Wars, during the
garbage compactor scene (after rescuing Princess Leia), he calls to
C3PO to stop the compacter 'THX-138' (I think). It may have been
'1138', but the reference is definitely there. A little lazy, couldn't
think of another name :*).

I have seen it (THX-138) in the video stores here in Australia, so I
guess it must also be available in USA.

Also, in American Grafitti, another Lucas film, one of the cars
has a license plate with THX-138 on it.
I caught the last half of THX-1138 a very long time ago, and though
I cannot comment on the whole film, what I did see, I liked.

| I fell asleep. One of the worst movies I have ever seen. There was
nothing to it! How long can a person watch a bunch of bald people
barely moving around in a bald landscape?
I KNOW that it was supposed to be "deep" and "have a message", but I,
for one, just couldn't stand all of the nothingness!
I am glad that Lucas got his act together after this one.

I do believe that Princess Leia's Cell Block was ... cell block THX 1138.
seems that he dropped it in a whole bunch of places.

| In contrast to .4, I think "THX-1138" is Lucas's best movie. Every
movie thereafter seemed to be aimed at a younger and younger audience:
teenagers for "American Graffiti", young teens for "Star Wars",
and kids for "Willow". That's not to say that they aren't
enjoyable for older audiences (I liked even "Willow"), but that
there's less and less to them. "THX-1138" had a number of interesting
things in it: suppressing revolt by suppressing sexuality, the
hologram church, the infinite white prison, the cost-conscious
robot police. Lucas managed to do an amazing amount with his
student film budget, mainly by using BART tunnels for underground
city scenes.
My only complaint would be that the sound was bad. Perhaps that
was deliberate - the future is noisy and hard to understand - or
it could be that that's where his money ran out. Still, the
final scene of the movie is one of my favorites in all of film,
and one that still raises the goose bumps.

| Lucas made an earlier, shorter version of "THX-1138" as a student. If
you get a chance to see the short, grab it - I enjoyed it more than the
long version.

| THX 1138 is a great film! Robert Duval is perfect in his role.
A combination of "BULL" Mitchum and "BOO" Radley. He carried
with him that narcotic confusion coupled with that always do
right,super responsible attitude.Complex,sensitive, detatched.
The white room was a great metaphor for today's penal system;
Boring , hopeless, neglected, misunderstood.
Perhaps an idea taken from John Lennon ? " Keep them doped with
religion, sex, and TV" .
A real head trip.Check it out!

1138 was the cell block from which Chewbacca was being "transfered". Neither
Princess Leia's cell block nor the trash compactor was numbered 1138.

Re: .2, .5, and .17
I don't know about the movie, but in the "Star Wars" novel,
THX-1138 is the number of the stormtrooper who searches the
"empty" Millenium Falcon and gets mugged by Han Solo after
it gets sucked into the Death Star.
The name of the stormtrooper is different in the movie.

"Chapter IV" wasn't dropped, it was added.
The trooper's number was never THX-1138, it was always TK-421.
It was only THX-1138 in the novelization. That "1138" in STAR
WARS was, as stated before, the cell block number that Chewie
was claimed to be transferred from.
