1120.0. "Trail Riding Stables ???" by SOLVIT::LAURENCELLE () Tue Dec 24 1991 16:06

    What ever happened to the good old Riding Stables that used
    crop up here and there?

    I can think of at least eight that used to exist in Mass.
    and New Hamp. that aren't around anymore.

    Do they still exist out there?

    I constantly run into people who want to ride a horse (for an
    hour) that I can't refer anywhere.

	I go to a place in Phillipston Mass called Stoney Acres. They charge
$10/hour and are open all year. They are VERY nice people who run the place !!!

	There number is 508-249-2582 and you need to call before going.

    Re .0:

    Lawyers, judges, and today's pervasive lawsuit mentality.
    That, in a nutshell, is why there are so few stables left.

    I'm amazed that Bobby's Ranch, or, for that matter, any other
    trail-riding stable, is still around.

    Where is Phillipston?

1120.6Iron Horse Motel???MR4DEC::NKUNSTMon Jan 13 1992 09:4513
    Has anyone out there ever heard of the Iron Horse Motel?
    It is near Bennington VT. on rt 7? I heard that they have
    horses for rent, and you can ride just about where ever you
    want, and these rides are unguided.

    I would like to find out where it is and maybe the phone
    number for it?

    Thanks for any information.

    Is there any horse back riding places that offer non-guided
    tours? I like to go riding, but I don't want a tour guide.

    Anywhere in Mass, southern Vermont, or southern New Hampshire

    Thanks for any info

    MA doesn't allow un-guided tours. I think the same may
    apply to NH, possibly VT, but I'm not sure...
1120.9Mass law against unguided tours?KOPEC::ROBERTSTue Jan 14 1992 14:148
    re .8

    Is there actually a law against unguided tours in Mass? Or is it just
    that you can't get a Mass Stable License if you allow unguided tours.
    Stables are allowed to operate without state licenses, last I knew.

    When talking to the owner of <mumble> where they rented
    horses, he said that it was a MA law. However, maybe he
    interpreted what you said in .9 as the same thing?
1120.11more of a safety issue I thinkAIMHI::PMURPHYTue Jan 14 1992 14:4310
    I would think the "guided" rides are more for safety of the horse and
    rider rather than as a "tour guide". Not everyone who goes to rent
    horses knows enough about the trails and possibly riding to go alone.
    Stable owners have to pay a lot of insurance money to stay open so I
    wouldn't think they'd be inclined to let a stranger take one of their
    mounts unguided. Maybe if a rider became a regular at a particular
    barn and the owners knew them better they'd let a competent rider out
    unguided.

1120.12safety for both rider and horseMPGS::RECZEKWed Jan 15 1992 23:1116

    I guide at Bobby's Ranch on weekends, and safety of both the riders and
    the horses (as .11 mentioned) is the main reason for guides. Bobby's has
    2000 acres of conservation land with many trails (I've been guiding there
    since 1987 and still find new trails to explore), none of witch are
    marked, at their disposal.

    I don't know what the MA law is, but I do know most people appreciate
    a good guide. We split each ride into beginner (walking,trotting) and
    advanced (walking,trotting,cantering) rides. The guide appraises
    his/her ride and paces the ride appropriatly.

    Ya'll should check it out some time. $15/hr on weekdays, $20/hr on week
    ends. Lessons are also available. Their phone # (508) 263-7165

	Hello~

		I'm looking for some referals. I have a friend who loves
	horses and I'd like to take her riding as a birthday present
	(i.e. Stable to rent horses). I'm looking for a place where you
	can do more than ride within a coral, perhaps some trails, through
	feilds, etc... When I was a kid there were a few stables that rented
	horses by the hour however, I realize times have changed and I'm not
	sure if places like this exist anymore what with liability and such.
	Any recommendations???

				Thanks in advance.
