792.22 | Horse Clubs | CELICA::GOLDMAN | | Wed Jan 27 1988 16:59 | 21 |
| I asked this question in my introduction but I was afraid with all
my rambling on it could have gotten over looked and I thought the
replys could be helpful to other noters.
My question is:
I want to join a Massachusetts area horse club that is an all-breed club
that may have information on local shows and trail rides. I have
heard about "New England Horsemen's Council" and "Tri State Horsemen's
Assocation". But I have no idea what these clubs are geared towards. I also
read about a club called "Pine Valley Adult Riders Association", which
I know is for the Middlesex County area.
If any of you belong to these clubs, or know anything about them
please let me know.
Thanks!
Sue

792.23 | New England Trail Riders | INK::REED | | Wed Jan 27 1988 22:15 | 32 |
| Hi Sue! Welcome!
I'm sorry I haven't heard of any of the clubs you mentioned however,
I just received my renewal letter from Cross State Trail Ride.
This is a New England/New York based group that offers distance
rides (usually starting 5+ miles and up) and also has an annual
9 day ride. The 9 day ride is usually held in two states but this
year it looks like they are considering staying in upstate New York
for the whole time but the planning meeting isn't until the end
of March.
The annual fee is $5.00. The Corresponding Secretary is Pat O'Neil,
435 Martins Pond Road, Groton, MA 01450. If you like send me mail
on INK or ERASER::REED and I'll send you a copy of the letter.
The New England trail riders group I belong to is the Vermont Trail
Riders Association. I only joined last year when I went on their
annual 4 day ride. The ride cost $60.00 but all the riders got
3 absolutley scrumptious, filling, wonderful meals a day. We stayed
in a large hay field, the trails were well marked, scenic, the company
was great, there was a dance on Saturday night (included in the
fee), proceeded by a gut busting steak cookout. What I found nice
there was no pressure to complete the ride by a certain time or
at all. I met a lot of very nice people.
Sorry for ramblin' on. Bottom line, I had fun! The contact person
I think is: Kay Switzer, Sunny Brook Farm, RFD #2 Box 14, West Burke,
VT 05871.
Hope this helps. Good luck and let us know what you find out.

792.24 | A FEW MORE HORSE GROUPS | SCOMAN::ROCK | | Fri Jan 29 1988 11:21 | 28 |
| HI SUE, IT'S ME......
NEW ENGLAND HORSEMEN'S COUNCIL IS A GOOD CLUB TO BELONG TO IF YOUR
INTEREST IS GOING TO BE SHOWS. YOU WILL RECEIVE CLASS LISTS OF THE
RATED SHOWS (OPEN) IN NEW ENGLAND. YOU ALSO GET A YEARS SUBCRIPTION
TO THE HORSEMEN'S YANKEE PEDLAR. I BELEIVE THE DUES ARE $20.00 PER
YEAR. MASS. HORSEMEN'S COUNCIL AND TRI STATE I BELEIVE IS ALSO MAINLY
INVOLVED WITH HORSE SHOW.
IF TRAIL RIDING IS GOING TO BE YOUR THING... THERE ARE A COUPLE
OF LOCAL GROUPS (WITHIN 40 MINUTES DRIVE) THAT YOU MAY WANT TO LOOK
INTO. THERE IS THE BAY STATE TRAIL RIDERS , THEY ARE LOCATED IN
THE UXBRIDGE, BLACKSTONE AREA. THEY HOLD A LOT OF NICE RIDES IN
THE AREA, HAVE GREAT TRAILS TO RIDE ON AND ARE REALLY NICE FOLKS.
THEY ALSO HAVE CAMP OUTS THAT ARE A BLAST.
THERE IS ANOTHER GROUP DOWN IN THE SAME AREA IN FRANKLIN I THINK
AND THEY ARE CALLED I THINK "MASSABOG TRAIL RIDERS" YOU SHOULD
FIND BOTH OF THE GROUPS IN THE PEDLAR WITH THEIR ARTICLES AND THIS
GROUP DOES TRAIL RIDING AND "FUN DAYS" GYMKHANAS... I HAVE BEEN
TO ONE OR TWO OF THEIR MEETINGS BUT NEVER TO ANY OF THE HORSE RIDES.
I WOULD ALSO SUGGEST YOU CHECK OUT THE HORSEMENS PEDLAR... AND YOU
CAN READ THE ARTICLES THE DIFFERENT CLUBS PUT IN THE PAPER.
SEE YOU LATER...NOT TO MUCH LONGER BEFORE "SNOWY" WILL BE HERE!!!!

This looked like a good place to ask about the MADA and other Mass/So.NH
dressage organizations. What are they about? Do they meet regularly? What's
the cost of membership? What publications are offered when you join?
I found an old Pedlar that had Holly Williams name and number for MADA
membership - is this the person to call?
Thanks,
JB

| Janice,
I belong to MADA. They are trying to meet more regularly, but
I haven't been able to make it meetings since they are always at
a bad time for me (usually 7PM on a weeknight). Holly Williams
could give you info about membership. I think Meg Clement is really
doing the membership now - I don't have her address, but her phone
number is 603-924-3510. Membership is $10 ($15 for family). You
get a newsletter but no other publications.
Here is the schedule for what they have planned this year:
March 20 - Long-line driving demonstration by Phil DuBois at Otter
Brook Farm, Peterborough, NH (there is an entry form
in the Dec. newsletter for this)
May 14-15 - Clinic with George Williams (entry forms in later
newsletter)
June 26 - MADA Club Show at New Boston Youth Center, Lois Yukins,
judge
July 24 - Musical Kur One-Day Clinic with Renate Lansburgh
Sept. 25 - MADA Club Show at New Boston Youth Center, Beth Jenkins,
judge
Oct. ? - Another George Williams Clinic ????
There are also other nearby event run by the Hollis Area
Equestrians plus Holly Williams has a schooling show scheduled on
July 31st at her farm.

| MADA is the Monadnock Area Dressage Association. I think the majority
of the members live in southern NH from Nashua on west. There is
also SNHDC (Southern NH Dressage Club - I think it's club and not
association) for people in the eastern part of southern NH.

| New Hampshire Hunter & Jumper Association promotes hunter and jumper showing
and riding in NH and recommends improvements for NH hunter and jumper shows.
The Association elected new officers this year who have made many changes
in an effort to increase interest in the organization. A new system
of point scoring, for example, will allow members to report points from
shows that are not affiliated with NHH&J.
An annual membership is $5.00 for an individual or $8.00 for a family.
Massachusetts residents are permitted and encouraged to join also!
The latest newsletter explains the new system for point scoring in detail,
lists the divisions for year-end awards, prints the By Laws and includes
a point scoring form. To request a copy send mail to DLNVAX::OWEN (Beth
Owen, NHH&J Point Secretary) or LAUREL::NELSON (Nancy Nelson, NHH&J Vice
President). To find out more about the Association feel free to call

I received an interesting brochure in the mail this week, so am
reproducing it here:
MASSACHUSETTS ASSOCIATION OF STABLE OWNERS, OPERATORS AND INSTRUCTORS
On May 19th, 1988, a group of concerned stable owners gathered at
Saddle Rowe in Medway to discuss forming a new organization to serve
the needs of the Massachusetts horse industry. The organization that
resulted is the Massachusetts Association of Stable Owners Operators
and Instructors. The main purposes of the organization are as follows:
. To protect the legal rights of stable owners and operators,
trainers, instructors, and breeders, regardless of breed
affiliation or type of riding.
. To stimulate communication among the above listed groups and
promote the discussion and solution of common problems.
. To promote government intervention at state and national
levels, utilizing our new representation at the Farm Bureau.
Membership has been divided into two levels. Full membership
is limited to people from one of the above groups. As well as receiving
all mailings and a subscription to the Horsemen's Yankee Pedlar, full
membership entitles the member to vote on all issues. The cost of full
membership is $25.00 per person per year. Associate membership is a
non-voting membership available to any interested party. An associate
member receives all mailings and a subscription to the Horsemen's
Yankee Pedlar. The fee for an associate membership is $15.00.
If the Massachusetts Association of Stable Owners Operators and
Instructors is to be a vital, useful organization, it is imperative
that our membership come from as broad a base as possible. If you are
a stable owner or operator, an instructor, trainer or breeder, we need
your voice. And we believe that you need us. Please join us.
Any questions? Please call:

I do. I haven't been to meetings since last summer, and really
should get off my duff and get going. But it's a lot of fun;
mostly back-yard horses, and horses boarded at small personal
farms. They are also an exceptionally varied group of horse
people, some of whom have spent a great deal of time and effort
on learning about a particular piece of horsemanship/care/etc.
For instance, one woman belongs to a hunt, and goes regularly;
she did a talk on how-to's for a hunt, and it was really very
interesting. A few members are into competitive trail riding
and host rides at their farms; you can volunteer to work on some
of these and see some really hell-bent-for-leather riding over
miles, and well-conditioned horses; and listen at the vettings
over the course - fascinating. Another member is very much up
on health issues, conditioning, etc; there are some who drive,
some who show, some who breed. The club puts on pleasure trail
rides and a small members-only fun show which I've had great
times at.
One of the best things is that, because the group is so varied in
its interests, you have a wonderful opportunity to learn from them.
And the people are nice. I like the group. They meet once a month
(3rd Wednesday?) for a regular meeting, have a speaker or some
thing to do; also put on "mounted" activities; are associated with
Harvard Horse, North County Ride and Drive, and NEH&T, so you get
all the news from those groups, and can attend their functions.
This Sunday they are putting on the Art Caruso annual (10th) trail
ride; 20 miles out of Groton (also a 10 mile route), includes
coffee, donuts in the a.m., snack on the trail, and fried chicken
lunch. If my trailer's out of ;the garage by then, I'll be there!
See ya,
Julie

involved with what sounded like a large trailriding club. We were
both picking up supplies at Rockingham Feed in Exeter, but I think
he was from Epping and I gathered that his club included members
from all around southern NH. Unfortunately, I don't recall his name!
But...if you call Rockingham Feed and ask for Pam, I'll bet she can
help you out. Or maybe even anyone who answers, as the guy was
obviously a regular customer.
Good luck,

792.44 | Which association(s) to join | VIVACE::ACKERMAN | Two GSDs, 1 Kees, & a 1/4 of a horse | Wed Nov 04 1992 17:56 | 22 |
| I've recently moved to Southern New Hampshire from Colorado, and am trying to
figure out which groups to join. There are so many organizations around here,
and my interests are really varied, which makes it difficult.
I have a quarterhorse gelding and we do alot of trail riding, but also show at
small schooling shows (training level dressage, teeny-tiny hunter classes,
pre-pre Novice two-phases, that kind of thing).
First, I'm looking for an organization to join that will make me eligible to
join the AHSA as an affiliate member. Which organizations in the area qualify?
Also, I'm willing to join more than organization, so I'm interested in hearing
about organizations even if they aren't AHSA-affiliated.
Also, I've noticed the Pedlar and one of the other local papers offer a free
subscription with membership in some organizations. This seems like a good deal,
as the cost of membership is usually just a few dollars more than the cost of
a subscription on its own.
Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.
