622.0. "Riding Clothes Patterns" by JOKUR::ELFRING () Tue Sep 23 1986 16:29

                          - SADDLESEAT -

Although I am not a horseowner myself, my sister is very much
a part of the scene. She is just beginning to work in
Saddleseat and I would like very much to make her a saddleseat
outfit. I know that they are complicated, but I wonder if
anyone out there knows where I might get a pattern for the
outfit or the name of a company I might write??

Last I heard, Simplicity and McCall's both carried patterns for
all styles of clothing including chaps. I've never seen them in
the fabric stores, but they used to carry them and offer them through
    the horsey publications.

Good luck...please let us know how you make out.

622.2I made my own hunt seat stuff..ZEPPO::ROMBERGKathy Romberg DTN 276-8189Tue Oct 07 1986 12:2144

Several years ago I made some breeches for myself. Two years ago
I made myself a hunt coat. The patterns I used were Jean Hardy
Patterns. They carry (or at least did when I ordered my patterns) a
complete line from hunt seat to saddle seat to western. They even
    had men's patterns.

	The pattern numbers are:

680 Misses' Saddle Seat Coat (Size 6-18, all sizes in
one package). The classic coat for the show ring.
2-button, back vent and pleats. Instructions
		    included for formal habit adaptation.

690 Misses' Kentucky Jodphurs and Vest (Size 6-18, all
sizes in one package). To complete the above
		    outfit.

The patterns are designed primarily for knots with the exception
of the coats. These can be made of knit or woven fabric.

Both patterns are $5.00 (or they are according to my order form.
I have no idea whether this company is still in business, but it's
worth a try. The directions were fairly easy to follow.

	The address is:

		Riding Togs
A Division of Sewing Knits, Inc.
		Box 1493
		Boulder, CO 80302

	Good Luck!

			    Kathy

P.S. Sorry it took so long to reply - I'm moving and I had to
find the right box to look in ;-) .

.....I forgot, add $.50 per pattern for shipping and handling.
Colorado residents add 5.5% sales tax.

I know this is late, but I just found the information. I ordered
a pattern from a place called Suitability. They have patterns for
all types for riding apparell. Saddleseat, hunt seat, men's breeches,
shirts, horse blankets... They give you a "master pattern" and
then you are expected to customize it to the person you are making
the outfit for. You can also order fabric from them, although I
    think they are expensive.

    Some sample prices:

    	saddle seat jodhpurs	7.00
    	saddle seat vest	5.00
    	saddle seat coat	14.00
    	stretch breech 7.00
    	hunt coat 14.00

    	stretch twill $10/yd
    	nylon/spandex $9/yd

    Their address is

    	Suitability
    	12485 Cedar Road No. 3
    	Cleveland Hts., Ohio 44106

For anyone referencing this note (as I did) - looking for a pattern source
- my inquiry at this address was returned stamped as undeliverable. I will try
"Suitability" next...

622.7Riding Clothes Patterns (English & Western)ASABET::OWENFri Oct 12 1990 18:3220
I'm looking for information about patterns for an Hunt Seat jacket and
riding shirt suitable for showing. I'd like to have a jacket and shirt
custom made this winter for next show season. My dressmaker would like
    a pattern.

I've sent to SUITABILITY Inc for their brochure. They have patterns for
all styles of riding clothes including a hunt jacket and shirt.
Unfortunately, the drawings of their clothes are very rudimentary and
it's hard to tell if the pattern is a good one.

Has anyone had experience using patterns? Or are there other pattern
manufacturers so I can compare cost, etc.

Suitability charges $14 for the jacket pattern and $7 for the shirt
pattern. They also have patterns for horse clothing, which I though
t was interesting. They supply names of vendors to obtain fabric
suitable for breeches and horse clothing too, which I thought was
    very valuable.

    Thanks for your help.

A friend of mine, who is not a seamstress, has made herself 2 pairs of leather
seated breeches using Suitability pattern and materials. She seems to be
pleased with the result. She has been able to make 2 (maybe 3) pairs of
leather seated breeches for what 1 pair would have cost new.

I have made (for myself) a jacket and breeches (using patterns from what I
believe was the precursor to Suitability). Other than the directions being a
little hard to follow at some points, I've worn the stuff in competition. (i.e.
I'm not too ashamed of it to be seen in public). I've never used their material
though.
